Just a quick update to inform you that over the last three years, we have been pretty good about killing spam here with the diligent help of ucrank, Sailor Steve, and Jimbuna, and many sharp eyed members such as cdrsubron7, Skybird, TLAM Strike, joea, Oberon, Lucky Starr, Hitman, Nippelspanner, seaniam81, raymond6751, Chad, Pisces, Mud, CCIP, guntherprien, Rhodes, Sniper297, HunterICX, ReallyDedPoet, d@rk51d3, darius359au, Kptlt. but if you report a spammer and I do not award it to you, don't be shy, PM me.

Was discussing spam busting tactics with some other forum admins, and one told me a funny story I thought I would share with you. :rotfl2:

Something that did amuse me no end recently, I installed SMF on one of my domains to test something out. I forgot to delete the installation and didn't revisit it for around three months. When I returned it had a thriving community of bots mostly extolling the virtues of a Canadian pharmaceutical company. The number of users, threads and posts were in the thousands. There was more activity there than on some of my forums.

I was a mod on an old nation-simulator game board, when the game wound down I stupidly didn't lock everything up. I came back a few months later and the place was infested with the sods. I had to go through and weed them all out and lock everything up.
I renamed myself the 'Gardener' after that. :haha:

Made a post in the cat-thread toke a look at my avatar and post count

WHAT !?

My avatar was different from the one I had yesterday and I had 4000 + posting here at Subsim.

I have been searching this forum for a special avatar, I did this to find the one I remember i had yesterday before I closed my computer. I count find this avatar I do remember how it looks like but forgot the name(alias)

I have been thinking a lot, but I'm 99.99 % sure I had more than 4000 + posting and a different avatar.

I let my anti virus program make a clean-up before I closed my computer, I'm not an expert on computers and forums, I doubt that this cleaning of my computer should have any thing to do with this.

So I'm confused.

In case you missed it, we were hit by the biggest spam attack since Kennedy was President. :timeout: Starting at approx 02:37 CST, a horde of new "members" began signing up and flooding GT and SH3 Workshop with chinese-ish spam and there was no let up. Luckily for us, Spam Hunters Dowly, a.g., Bera, Rhodes, padi, and rowi58 took immediate action and rang the alarm, launching Jimbuna into action. Jim says there were over 260 spam posts landed, and quickly u crank joined in the effort to block them out. We had a breakdown of my awesome emergency procedure, which I am trying to fix now. We cannot stop the first few spammers from getting in the gate, but I will try to give our moderators better tools to shut the gate before it gets as bad as last night.

Thank you Jim, u crank, Dowly, a.g., Bera, Rhodes, padi, and rowi58 !

Betonov did mention that we'd been invaded by Koreans, probably Best Korea trying to learn the secret behind Jimbunas post count.

EDIT: It's quite impressive to read a post by ikalugin and see that his post count is 0. The Koreans really did a number, didn't they?

I'll do my best to shed some light on this matter....

As many of you are now aware, SubSim found itself under a sustained and unprecedented attack yesterday from spammers base in the orient.

The timing was during sleeping hours across the pond and in the early hours of the morning here in the UK so you could say it happened during my watch.

The SubSim protocol already in place for such an event was immediately acted upon but such was the level of the attack no reasonable time could be given for a response so the decision was taken (by me) to go immediately to Defcon 1 in order that no further damage should be accomplished by these (insert appropriate expletive here).

In excess of 260 posts in various parts of the forum (mostly GT and SH3 Mods Workshop) as well as more than 20 accounts had to be hastily expunged because the attack was ongoing even as remedial action was being carried out.

At the conclusion further investigation showed at least one thread (music) and possibly more in GT had been lost. The outcome being that some members have lost posts and suffered a reduction in said post count (I personally lost 3500).

Personally speaking, I'm not overly bothered but if any member feels differently they should contact Neal and ask for a reinstatement of post count number.

Neal is investigating the possibility of reinstating any lost threads but it is not sure if that is possible.

I can only apologise for any detriment anyone feels they may have suffered, this was not intended but desperate times called for swift and decisive action and having spoken to Neal yesterday I take comfort in the fact he is happy in the actions I took.

Further protocols are now in place which hopefully will mean there is less possibility of such an event happening again.

Famous last words.

Dowly
11-13-15, 08:25 AM
It is understandable that in dealing of such mass spam attack, some real threads get mixed in as well.

All good. :yep:

Thanks for your patience. I did some db maintenance and it seems to have restored the user counts. Ranks look normal again. I cannot find the missing threads (2) anywhere in the db. I will check the backups, but will have to wait until I get to a friend's house to use some unlimited internet connection. Even then, the db is 6GB+ so it may be a lost cause as far as time/effort is worth it. :salute:

Dowly
11-13-15, 09:44 AM
If it was just the two threads (terrorist thread & music) I wouldn't worry about it too much. Oberon already made new 'terrorist' thread and we can just make a new music thread.

Onkel Neal
11-13-15, 09:49 AM
I appreciate that, Dowly. Restoring a thread is possible, not all that difficult, even for me, but getting the backup db moved across the web is a chore.

I got an idea, maybe its useless

When a person have registered, he or she will get a 6-8 digit number and are only allowed to post in the "Comments to SUBSIM Review" Here the person can create their first thread. The person who have registered will also receive a note in their conformations mail. In this note the person could read

"Dear N.N thank you for your interest in our Sub - community. Before we give you full access to all of goodies, we need a personal letter from you, where you tell us your interest, where you live, your age and so on. Until then feel free to post something about you in the Comments to SUBSIM Review, this is the only place you can post until on of our moderators has given the green lights. If everything goes as planned, you will receive another mail from us."

After a person has done so, send a pm to Neal or some other moderator, this person gets another mail from Subsim-Here the person can now create his or her nickname and log-on code.

Just an idea.

When this new "not yet approved member" post something in the Comments to SUBSIM Review-subforum, we will not see a nickname, but this 6-8 digit-This 6-8 digit will be there until this new member has been approved, then those 6-8 digit number will change to what alias he or she has picked

Forget my idea I wrote about before-It will not prevent a spammer to spam the only place this person are allowed to post in.

Eventually a new member are first allowed to post own threads or write comments after he or she has been approved by some of the moderator or Neal. Same here, the person has to send a mail with information about him or her, before getting the green light.

.... in a dim, rusted metal-walled warehouse packed with work stations and beige computers in the sweltering Bombay heat, three swarthy young men in dirty, white business shirts and limp neckties gather around a gurgling water cooler...

"...did you hear? Pashhtek said he got a thread in Subsim past Jim and ucrank, it was there for 2 months."

"No sh^t?"

"Yeah, so he came back and edited the thread, inserting his essay link. It never made the thread pop up to the top, so it was super stealth, man!"

"s7rikeback didn't catch it? skidman?"

"No way, man."

You mean, it even got past aktungbby?"

"It did indeed."

"Yes! That's how a pro does it!"

"Yes! Yes!"

"It won't last," said a guy who was listening close by. The three turned to face this new guy.

"Why not? It has the links, it's buried on page 4, it's a success."

"No. And I tell you why. Every few days, the Onkel runs searches on the whole forum, by members with less than 50 posts, going back for years, and then exports the results as CSV. Then he imports them into a tool that can run searches for edited posts, for links in posts, and for specific key words --"

"--no!"

"Yes, I am afraid so."

"What key words?" gulped Pagoopda.

"Casino..." They all gasped. "Essays. Pharmacy. Prize. Potency".

They all looked at the floor. He finished in a whisper; "Even... Enhancement..."

"That bastard," Blenugh murmured. Slowly, they all drifted off to their workstations with sinking spirits.

UPDATE: Transmission intercept

.... in a dim, rusted metal-walled warehouse packed with work stations and beige computers in the sweltering Bombay heat, three swarthy young men in dirty, white business shirts and limp neckties gather around a gurgling water cooler...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

"That bastard," Blenugh murmured. Slowly, they all drifted off to their workstations with sinking spirits.

I hope we don't have any Hindu's here :o

The 33 Million Gods of Hinduism. Why Hindus worship so many gods and goddesses is a real mystery for most people. In the West, where the mass majority of people are part of the Abrahamic faith tradition with one God, the concept of polytheism is nothing more than fantasy or mythology worthy of comic book material.

PS I hope Sir Charles didn't do anything nasty to Martha :o

PS I hope Sir Charles didn't do anything nasty to Martha :o

I'm not sure yet. I'm still writing.:D

I think Sir Charles was furious at Martha's pending nuptials and angry at being rejected, Sir Charles hit's Martha over the head with a blunt instrument, probably the dog. Sir Charles then hypnotizes Martha into thinking she is Britney Spears and does plastic Surgery on her so she looks like Britney spears, Including all the plastic. Sir Charles even gives Martha a terrible singing voice to make it all the more convincing. :)

I stopped writing there.

Either Sir Charles mails Martha to Las Vegas, postage due, in a trunk where she does 2 shows a night, 3 on Saturdays with a matinee or with all of Britney's / Martha's plastic, she has a Tupperware party. :D

I haven't decided yet and I'm still working on it. This is a common story and I'm sure it happens everyday :yep:

@Neal :haha:

^ Who is Sir Charles? :hmmm:

I suppose some explanation is due. When Neal did his update transmission post, the flamboyancy of his writing struck me and others as funny. For whatever reason, it reminded me of stories my great grandparents had told me of having dinner and then gathering around the big radio's to listen to the latest updates on WW2 and I'm guessing, WW1. This was of course before television.

As entertainment, there were also Melodrama's like the Shadow and comedy routines. When Neal did his shtick, I Immediately thought of that. As with melodrama's, the characters are exaggerated, usually in an absurd way.

Charles Schultz wrote the Peanuts gang, Charlie Brown and Snoopy comic strip. He frequently showed Snoopy on top of his doghouse behind a typewriter writing fictitious stories. Snoopy wrote in an exaggerated way as well.

David Ogden Stiers portrayed surgeon Charles Emerson Winchester. Mash was acclaimed as being both serious and also steeped in absurdity. Stiers did a fantastic job and interjected a lot of his personality into his role such as his love of Classical music.

I was also a fan of the English comedy Sitcom, As Time Goes By. It featured Judy Dench and Geoffrey Palmer.

The merging of these three gives us Sir Charles and Martha and serves as an inspiration. :)

It comes from the fertile imagination of yours truly and again, was meant to be completely absurd.

Ah thanks!

I thought it had something to do with the equally absurd book by John Hulme (wo does not exist) and his book "Die gesammelten Werke des Lord Charles" (~"The collected works of Lord Charles"), who (allegedly) is said to be an excentric Lord living in England, who collected german songs and rhymes, "translated" into english only by sound, like "How fine am bough mine cook-hook s'arse" which would be "Auf einem Baum ein Kuckuck saß".

It is presumably a fake name of some german, making fun of the english and german language.
Don't try to make sense of it :O:

^No he bloody hasn't, I would like to inform you that the real Lord Charles is a highly respected member of the British establishment, apart from when he's drunk, which unfortunately for everyone else is every hour of every day.

Regarding the post about spammers - This sketch script is the origin of the term spam - for unwanted email etc. I provide this as a matter of historical and cultural interest to the group....so blame Monty Python`s flying circus..and please dont treat this as spam :Kaleun_Cheers:

From the second series of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”
Transcribed from “Monty Python’s Previous Record” by Jonathan Partington
(Spam = Spiced Pork And Ham, a sort of cheap luncheon meat)

Scene: A cafe. One table is occupied by a group of Vikings with horned helmets on. A man and his wife enter.

Man (Eric Idle): You sit here, dear.

Wife (Graham Chapman in drag): All right.

Man: (to Waitress)** Morning!

Waitress (Terry Jones, in drag as a bit of a rat-bag): Morning!

Man: Well, what’ve you got?

Waitress: Well, there’s egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam;

Vikings: (starting to chant) Spam spam spam spam…

Waitress: …spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam…

Vikings: (singing) Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!

Waitress: …or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.

Wife: Have you got anything without spam?

Waitress: Well, there’s spam egg sausage and spam, that’s not got much spam in it.

Wife: I don’t want ANY spam!

Man: Why can’t she have egg bacon spam and sausage?

Wife: THAT’S got spam in it!

Man: Hasn’t got as much spam in it as spam egg sausage and spam, has it?

Vikings: Spam spam spam spam (crescendo through next few lines)

Wife: Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?

Waitress: Urgghh!

Wife: What do you mean ‘Urgghh’? I don’t like spam!

Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!

Waitress: Shut up!

Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!

Waitress: Shut up! (Vikings stop) Bloody Vikings! You can’t have egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam.

Wife: (shrieks) I don’t like spam!

Man: Sshh, dear, don’t cause a fuss. I’ll have your spam. I love it. I’m having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam beaked beans spam spam spam and spam!

Vikings: (singing) Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!

Waitress: Shut up!! Baked beans are off.

Man: Well could I have her spam instead of the baked beans then?

Waitress: You mean spam spam spam spam spam spam… (but it is too late and the Vikings drown her words)

Vikings: (singing elaborately) Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam! Spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam. Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Spam spam spam spam!
