View Full Version : USS Winston Churchill!!!!
While reading this article about the USS Theodore Roosevelt being sent to patrol off the Yemen coast, they list other US ships in the area. And one of them is the USS Winston Churchill. Not a thing wrong with having a ship named after the famous PM of Great Britain, was just surprised to see it. I don't know the procedure the US Navy uses to name ships, but thought this was kind of neat myself. From the article-
"The other U.S. combat ships near Yemen are: the destroyers USS Forrest Sherman and USS Winston Churchill; the minesweepers USS Sentry and USS Dextrous; and three amphibious ships carrying about 2,200 Marines, the USS Iwo Jima, the USS New York and the USS Fort McHenry. The USNS Charles Drew, the USNS Laramie and the USNS Arctic also are nearby. "

By tradition, the Churchill also always has a Royal Navy navigator (on exchange with the USN) assigned to her as part of the crew. The only US ship to permanently carry a foreign officer on board.

PSST! His mom was an American of considerable beauty, 'political savvy' and talent: Besides the USS Iowa...and me!:O: it's amazing what comes out of Brooklyn NY:up::http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d2/Jenniejerome1854.jpg/220px-Jenniejerome1854.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jenniejerome1854.jpg)Lady Randolph Churchill http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1083772/Earls-counts-future-King--200-lovers-younger-son-As-new-documentary-reveals-wonder-high-society-wits-called-Winston-Churchills-wayward-mother-Lady-Randy.html (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1083772/Earls-counts-future-King--200-lovers-younger-son-As-new-documentary-reveals-wonder-high-society-wits-called-Winston-Churchills-wayward-mother-Lady-Randy.html)

Rgr that :yep:
Churchill is the only US Navy vessel to have a Royal Navy officer permanently assigned to the ship’s company as well as flying a foreign nation’s ensign. Lt Sewell is the ninth Royal Navy officer to have served onboard.

Also of note:Churchill is the only U.S. Navy ship to have a Royal Navy officer assigned permanently to the ship's company, a symbol of the partnership between the British and American navies. It is also the only U.S. Naval vessel to fly a foreign ensign - the Royal Navy's White Ensign is flown as well as the Stars and Stripes. Churchill is the fifth U.S. warship to be named in honor of an Englishman.

^ close enough! HMS Marlborough (after Churchill's ancestor-the Duke) which had assisted USS Cole during the Aden crises, had a US NAVY officer permanently assigned to her crew. HMS Marlborough has been sold to Chile as Almirante Condell. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e3/Portsmouth_Dockyard_from_the_water._-_geograph.org.uk_-_290678.jpgHMS Marlborough

We had a whole class of submarines named after him, one of whom remains the only nuclear submarine to sink an enemy warship. :03:

Rgr that Jamie and I'd wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone, not only does it cover the sinking of the Belgrano but also a top secret mission (at the time) Operation Barmaid deep inside Russian territorial waters in which she is tasked with obtaining a towed array from a surface vessel.
