I am near an enemy convoy, and in the convoy is a ship with two tanks on its hull! But, it has the flag of Greece! All other ships appear to. Be British. It is March of 1940
Will I get a penalty for sinking it?

see the prize regulations thread
according to the prize regulations which governed U-boat warfare at the time
By order of Der Führer, Greek vessels are to be considered hostile due to a large number of titles of transfer from Greece to the British forces.
If you are using the GWX mod... you shouldn't receive a penalty
Additionally, Neutral ships traveling under the protection of an enemy convoy were subject to attack

Was the Prize Regulation still on during March 1940? Can't remember the dates...

Unrestricted warfare around England depending on date and Prize regulations valid all through the war in other sea areas.
Sink the ship!

YES! You will receive a penalty! Everybody's talking about real life. In the game you will be docked negative renown for sinking a neutral no matter what the circumstances. This includes GWX.
The only way to guarantee a positive result is to edit the Basic.cfg:
[RENOWN]
RenownReachGridObjCompleted=0
RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=0
CompletedPatrol=0
NEUTRAL=-1
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-10
WrongShipSunk=-5000
FirstRankRenown=100
SecondRankRenown=350
EndCampaign=-5000
Change NEUTRAL =-1
To NEUTRAL=1
My personal preference is to have NEUTRAL=0, because I don't like having it too easy to get easy credit.
I also changed AXIS=-10 to AXIS=-1, because while sinking friendly ships did invite a court-martial, no kaleun was ever found guilty in those trials.
Also, the game color codes your targets. Or at least the stock version does.
Blue is the color of friendlies - friendly to the Germans that is.
Green is the color of non -hostiles (or neutral).
Red is the color of the enemy - red, like blood...
Grey is the color of an unknown. It will also show up when ships are sunk without any direct involvement from you, or if you did not actually observe the sinking.
Firing at neutrals even when sailing in convoy is frowned upon by the high command. Of course they understand that in battle, everything changes by the second, and often one of the very first casualties of any engagement is the battle plan itself!
This was one of the factors that angered the U-boat captains. The Americans took blatant advantage of their neutrality to send their own ships or destroyers with the British convoys, and there was nothing they could do about it. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbour, Germany felt then obliged to declare war against the USA, so by Dec. 11, 1941, the gloves were off and American ships were now fair game.
I've done this on occasion, that is, sail across to the eastern seaboard by December 6 .Waving the flag of neutrality, I will sail right up through the front gates of New York harbour. I will sail around, checking out the potential targets as they lie berthed at the piers. As soon as the flag drops, I will launch my attacks from inside their own refuge. True, it 'games the game' so to speak, but, these are things that I like to do...
Of course, realistically, I would be intercepted by the Navy or Coast Guard, "escorted" to the dockyards, and my captain and crew would be arrested and interned as 'enemy aliens', for the duration of the war. That's the least of what should happen.
Also, if you *do* sink a neutral, mistakenly or not, like an American, then for the next 48 hrs or so, you will be fired upon by those neutrals. At least until their hurt feelings cool off, and things go back to normal.

except that is to say the above radio message is transmitted to all U-boats in GWX on or before the date mentioned in the original post. I understand this is an immersion thing, but by giving the player the impression that he is weapons free against Greek vessels i think the GWX mod should have changed the renown hit for sinking neutrals - just my opinion for what its worth, which to most folks isnt much.
personally - in the game - i'd sink the bastard

Hello everyone, I ended up not sinking anything at all!
I was spotted and I had to give up, but thank you for the replies. I am using grey wolves, so I cannot see the colors of friendly or neutral or hostile. I found the read about prize regulations very interesting, b ut I think I will take the advice about the coding, which does not seem to fit the prize regulations rule by rule. (For example, does not appear there is coding to make greece a reward as the rules would dictate after the radio transmission )

It's an opinion I agree with, but the fact is that GWX does not change the renown. If you sink neutrals you will be penalized.
Unless you change the file yourself, of course.
