I am trying to install the XXXX grid for my nav map. I go through the process, and everything is fine until i try to save in note pad. It tells me access denied, and I cannot save. I am running win 8. Any ideas?

Didn't think of that. Thanks!

If the file it stored inside the Program Files folder somewhere, you can bet on it that Windows is going to complain when you save something as a normal user. It is trying to prevent potential malware investations. But if you start the editing program (could be anything) then Windows wil consider this a legit deliberate action by a person who knows what he's doing.

thanks for the reply, so how do I start this? I mean wht do you do to be considered an administrator to get inside this file? understand that my last computer was XP so I have never dealt with this window system before. I know the file i want to change, I just dont know hwo to go about it as admin. Thank you.

Press the windows key. Go to the search box and type in NOTEPAD. Then right click the notepad and select "Run As Administrator."

If you are going to be modding a lot I recommend editing the permissions on the entire SH3 folder so you have full control.

I was able to edit the file. Thank you. But the mod did not work. I will try again.

Did you get an error message?

No basically, started up notepad as admin, i copied the entire menu_???_??? cant remember the numbers, into the admin notepad, made the adjustments as per the readme for the gridXXXX mod, and then switched the menus out (keeping the old one just in case). no errors, messages, or such, but no XXXX grid on nav map.

If I remember right it is a pull down so there is a .tga file that needs to be put somewhere likely \Menu\Gui\Layout. Are you using any other mods if so what is your activation order?

I installed the tga in the right spot. My mods are (in this order):

OLC mkIId gold
da boot clothes

simple right? What would be the problem?

Probably you missed something. Let's try again:

gridXXXX.tga must be in - data/Menu/Gui/Layout/

According to OLC's menu_.ini, Grid XXXX must be [G31 I26]
And is good to change it position, because now is under JonZ draggable chrono.
Try this:

[G31 I26]
Name=Grid XXXX
Type=1031;Stat bmp array
ItemID=0x31000023
ParentID=0x31000000
Pos=90,1666,714,922
Color=0xFFFFFFFF
Materials=1
Display=0;No stretch
Mat 0=data/Menu/Gui/Layout/gridXXXX.tga
Crop 0=0,0,1,1
MatFlags=0x29
TexFmt=0x9
Drag=true
BmpState=1
NeedFocus=true
SelOne=true
IdGroup=0
StatesColors=0xFFFFFFFF, 0xFFFFFFFF, 0xFFFFFFFF, 0xFFFFFFFF

I put it as i20 as per the read me said, there is an i25, I will try that!

Well, from the readme:
3 - Open the file SilentHunterIII\data\Menu\menu_1024_768.ini, with text editor, notepad will do it.

4 - Use "Edit\Find" and search for last G31 item. In vanilla game this is [G31 I19]

5 - Copy from here [G31 I20] and paste it after [G31 I19] in menu_1024_768.ini

6 - If your last G31 item is not I19, edit new one [G31 I20] with next number, example: last item is [G31 I34] - new one will be [G31 I35]

This is weird. Ok i tried getting gridXXXX to work again, no good. Nothing on my nav map. I was playing the game, and all of a sudden i could not move the map around with my mouse! I am playing with it but nothing is moving except on the outskirts of the nav map. I put the mouse into the center, click and hold and drag (nothing is happening!) and push the mouse over and release, all of a sudden i can move the map again. The mod works, but I cannot see the grid. Is there a way to get this working, i am using OLC mk2 gold!

Perhaps check if you really have all the necessary tga's in the right folder?

My spidersense is telling me some gui element you added/changed by editing the menu-file is conflicting with the Attackdisk panel.

It could be a duplicate item id number (the long hexadecimal string).

sublynx, I assumed to just drop the gridxxx.tga into layout and that was it. is there more to do with this? I mean like I said, it is there, just invisible!

as far as the attack disk is concerned Pisces, I use the disk often, I mean I love that thing, and if there is a conflict, there is none with the attack disk. I would assume if there were conflicts, the disk would not work properly.

I'm at my phone right now so I can't check how many tga's gridxxxx contains but it needs at least 2. One for the actual picture and one for the handle that you drag the grid picture with.

I'm sure your right but the file I downloaded only had one

This is what the inside of the downloaded and opened 7zip folder looks like.
The readme file explains install procedures.

Yes that is what I have. I even used the illustrations to do it right.

Hmmm. Maybe you could post the relevant part of your menu_1024_768.ini file here, or upload the whole file somewhere to make it possible to take a look at it. I do need to get back to my computer to do that, but this is getting mysterious. This mod really should work in almost any SH3 with minimal or no problems.
