In very heavy seas I was searching in BE47. After locating a convoy (Halifax bound probably) I tracked it on hydrophone until daylight. A periscope search before surfacing revealed a straggler and a corvette at about 2k. After repeated observation I could see that the straggler, a small merchant, was making only one or two knots but the corvette seemed not to be moving at all and I thought at first it was sinking. It was a situation I’ve not seen before so I used the external camera to get up close and the corvette is just floating stern well down, its bows high in the air, not moving, not sinking, but with prop still going like crazy. It’s been like that for over two hours.

Most peculiar.

I have had that happen before as well. It was south of Ireland, a really bad storm for about 5 days. I was heading west after attacking a convoy, and found a tramp steamer doing the exact same thing. O knots and stern out of the water. I just open a bow cap and gave her one. Most likely a flaw in code, but I would like to chalk it up as a ship in distress in a violent storm!

I have run across situations where heavily loaded ships faltered in storms and sank without having any damage inflicted by me. the sinking icon was grey.

additionally, some convoys are known to come under attack by one or more AI U-boats if you are using GWX - it is possible she was damaged in an earlier attack prior to your discovery of the convoy.

I have encountered a number of convoys with some of the ships burning, scar markings on their hulls, others listing badly but still keeping up.

so it is possible an AI U-boat is the culprit

sadly, they o-nly strike with the deck gun on the surface so running gun duels dont last long especially with armed convoys with escorts. they rarely sink a ship, but often do some damage to a few of the merchants before the escorts fend them off - and by that i mean destroy them.

I once ran across a Type VII Uboat heading at flank speed toward the french coast.

it was burning at the conning tower and about every 1 or 2 KM there would be a big explosion which would leave floating debris. the sub however kept chugging along as fast as it could... i followed it for a while but decided to return to course eventually instead of burning up my fuel. but that U-boat continued on as fast as it could with a big explosion and fireball every couple of minutes leaving behind it a bread crumb trail of floating crates spaced every couple of KM it was interesting

I have come across a convoy with an escort destroyer that was ablaze in a most impressive way....still she did not display any loss of speed or fighting capacity....I shadowed that convoy for 2 days until I ran out of torpedoes, when I last saw it she was still on fire....but still sailing normally.

That was yet another manifestation of the dreaded 'Ghost Rider' :haha:
