I have not played the Silent Hunter games since I was a young teenager. I wanted to play them again, I have Silent Hunter III, and Silent Hunter IV Wolves of the Pacific. I remember from my childhood that Silent Hunter IV crashed a lot, very buggy. So we never played it much.

I didn't even know what mods were back then either.

So, here I am. Thinking to play again, I saw it on my CD rack and thought it sounded like a good idea. I have windows 7, and 1920x1080 resolution.

First, I do not know which game to play. 3 or 4. Personally I find the pacific theatre more interesting for me, (or maybe it was because my brother was obsessed with Germans it made me want to be different...) but I feel if it still is not a good game I can play Silent Hunter 3.

So here are my questions.

1. Which game should I play? 3 or 4? I would play it modded now that I know how well mods improve games. Is 3 still better overall?

2. When I tried installing Silent Hunter 3, it showed something to install checked "windows media 9 codecs" I do not know what this is. Should I leave this checked?

3. After installing, is there a way to play in my 1920x1080 resolution? I have a laptop which has a smaller resolution, but it overheats a lot... and it is not a very standard resolution on it either from what I remember, but might be wrong (least it was not a standard resolution on Railroad Tycoon 3!)

4. Eventually, I will need help picking mods to install for SH 3 or 4 , depending on which I play first.

Guess that is all the questions for now. Thank you for your time, and sorry if this is a bad place to post this, I didnt see a "General Silent Hunter Discussion" subforum

Just my opinion on which you should play, it's SH3! I love 3 because the mods are better, and vast. I love the Atlantic campaign. You are essentially the bad boy. The trouble maker... I mean your boss is Hitler!!! Need I say more! You are out to starve an island continent to make war!

I like playing good guys though! I can pretend to be a bad guy as well , of course... sink those liberty ships!!! :arrgh!: maybe I just find fighting the British boring... but it does not matter too much, I am mostly interested in which has the best gameplay (when including mods). So it is still silent hunter 3?

1. Which game should I play? 3 or 4? I would play it modded now that I know how well mods improve games. Is 3 still better overall?
SH4 is more stable and has improvements that I think are cool. SH3 has had the benefit of many talented people creating many great mods. I use a supermod plus a laundry list of other mods longer than my arm. For SH4 I'm able to use fewer mods, but if more were available I would certainly use many of them as well. Most of the mods I like aren't really necessary, adding visual and audio extras that make it better for me.

2. When I tried installing Silent Hunter 3, it showed something to install checked "windows media 9 codecs" I do not know what this is. Should I leave this checked?
I do. It doesn't seem to harm anything, so I figure I might as well let it run.

3. After installing, is there a way to play in my 1920x1080 resolution? No, your boss is Dönitz. He was a U-boatman in the last war, not an infantryman, and knows how we think. We're not the bad guys, we're just a bunch of sailors doing what we're told. Is the fact that we have fun doing it our fault? :O:

but it does not matter too much, I am mostly interested in which has the best gameplay (when including mods). So it is still silent hunter 3?
Actually they are very similar, being the same game at heart. As I said earlier, SH4 has improved routines and better graphics, whereas SH3 still is way ahead in the available mods department.

I always thought so. but just wait, a lot of guys will respond to this and give u a 4 is better speech.

Note: 'Permanently Installed' means that I installed those items one-at-a-time with JSGME, tested them, uninstalled them and put them back in manually and tested again. I had a failure doing that this time, and they are all installed with JSGME and seem to be doing fine. 'JSGME' refers to mods that I remove depending on what year it is. 'Always reinstall' involves keeping a copy of those files already finalized in a safe place, so I don't have to go back and fiddle with them each time I have to reinstall the game.

To understand just how many times I've completely junked SH3 and started over from scratch see this thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=217586).

This time I've made a copy of the entire setup and put it in a safe place. The next time I have to reinstall everything I'm hoping to just copy that finished version into the new folder and have it work. I'm not confident about it. :sunny:

Eh, watch out, with the "Sailor Steve" method you run the risk to spent more time on reading about mods and modding the game rather than actually playing it!! :D

Btw, I suggest you to start with a big mod (GWX or NYGM or LSH or others... see my sign) and little set of carefully selected mods to apply over it and give it a go! Try to play your first career, starting from tne initial years (1939 or 1940) and build up some experience in intercepting and sinking alone merchants and small convoys while developing some feelings in how to fool the escorts...

I did not know the community surrounding these games were so vibrant! Perhaps testimony to the greatness of the games! Or perhaps to the lack of any vision in producers today in gaming ... regardless, I am very happy for all of your replies!

Why not play both?

I will probably play both, I just want to focus on one though at a time, I don't like hopping between games. (Like, for railroad tycoon 3 and 2, re-living those old memories, I played 3 completely then went to 2)

SH4 is more stable and has improvements that I think are cool. SH3 has had the benefit of many talented people creating many great mods. Yes, I just turned 22 actually hahaha me and my brother loved to play this game, although probably not too well. I remember being very hyped for Silent Hunter 4 and pre ordering it. We played it the day it released, but it crashed constantly and there were quite a few bugs. We never came back to play any of the silent hunter games. One of our first disappointments in pre ordering games and botched releases.... (know better by now that I never pre order games and usually allow months to pass to allow all the bug fixes patches)

I don't drink though :03:

This is as it stands at this moment:

:o Ok, for all the games I played, I never seen so many mods... most i've ever had in games would probably be 3. (But condensed mods, utilizing many different smaller mods) Most of my experience in modding is from Paradox Interactive, where I had mods for Crusader Kings II (Medieval strategy game) and Hearts of Iron III (WWII strategy game), ocasionally changing a modifier.

Are mods for Silent Hunter III mostly unorganized?? For the games I played, usually there are dedicated grand "Realism" mods and things like that, or mods dedicated to improving graphics. Are there any for this game?? Or is it more, you have to look for everything yourself and hope they are compatible? :p scrolling through though I see some interesting ones pretty quickly, I am a big fan of historical realism in games, or at least plausibility

Ok I need some help with installing

I have a disk.

Box looks like this:

http://i.imgur.com/iIhin0E.jpg

I installed it, but did not install GameShadow. I heard something about some starforce thing and installing this game, but didn't look to much into it, since it sounds like a real pain to fix. I dont know if I have it or not

Anyway, when I installed, I went straight to install some patches here:

http://www.silenthunteriii.com/uk/updates.php

And selected Silent Hunter 3 US DVD PATCH 1.4b, ubi.com link

Installed that, BUT it said it was installing 1.3!! Where is 1.4 then?? or is it installed 1.4??? The exe. is labeled 1.4, but I do not know if the game is 1.4 since I cannot enter it

I tried playing the game to see the code at the main menu (where it would say which patch you are on) but it does not let me play since I am using windows 7 (says requires windows 2000 or windows xp or something)

So, now what?

Why is it not saying it installed 1.4b , and how do I play it in the first place :hmm2:

Gunnarr

Looking at the properties, it appears i have the first release, which includes starforce and no patch.

Apparently starting the game enables starforce, and now I need to get rid of it also??

this is very confusing, and I am very tired... I will come back and try to sort this out after sleeping and work!

Thank you to anyone who can help

Look on the back of the box - there should be a copyright date there. If it's 2005 then you certainly have StarForce. UBISoft allowed a hack to remove it. Neal has it posted here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160118)

It is 1.4, or to be more accurate 1.4b. You have no trouble there, it was just a typo on their part.

I tried playing the game to see the code at the main menu (where it would say which patch you are on) but it does not let me play since I am using windows 7 (says requires windows 2000 or windows xp or something)
Starting with Vista and continuing through 7 to 8.1, Windows decided that Program Files was meant for their own stuff and not yours. Some people install the game there and it works fine. After hearing many folks give this same advise, I didn't even try. Reinstall the game outside of Program Files and it should work fine. I created a folder path for mine that goes C:/Games/Ubisoft/SH3. Some install it on a different drive altogether.

Looking at the properties, it appears i have the first release, which includes starforce and no patch.
I paid full price for the game when it was new. I never had a problem with StarForce, but I read about many who did. Some years later I purchased a re-release copy which is fully patched and Starforce-free. Depending on how badly you want to play the game I would recommend doing the same. They're pretty cheap.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0038RG9ZC/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1428764750&sr=1-3

Be careful, though, that you don't get another 2005 version. If they say it's in a jewel case then it's newer. Contact them and ask for the date on the box. If it's 2008 or newer it's good to go. Or get it from Amazon Downloads.

I have several with 2004 as the only date on the box.
The files on the DVD are 2007. It is a Starforce free version though.
I have scanned the 5 relevant files known to contain the SF code.
And they are not the 'Reloaded hacked' files.

Got them last Monday through the Subsim/Amazon thingy.

Hey everyone

I installed the game in a different place, (went with C drive, then Games )

I followed the instructions here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160118

and downloaded this file from here:

http://www.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_silent_hunter_3.shtml

rld-sh14.rar

but when I unzipped it in a blank folder, Norton detirmined the files to be unsafe and removed them. Are they viruses in that file? (maybe the download has been tampered with?)

I don't know what to do now

I've never heard of that site. There could be malware mixed in with the game files. Or Norton might be overly paranoid. That's why I recommended Amazon.

I am just greedy with money, I do not like spending money much, I work at minimum wage so I do not make a huge amount... but if no one else has anything to say I suppose I will have to buy it in the way you described. I'll just give it a day or two and if no one else replies I will just buy it

I don't like Norton. I can't say anymore.

I don't like it either, but I don't know what to get sadly. I know it has a bad reputation, my brother who is very skilled with computers says this. But I am not sure what anti-virus to get, what I can trust. Do you have any recommendations while your here?? Or maybe that would be too offtopic

I have a Starforce plagued DVD version of SH3. By following the instructions I've always managed to install and re-install the game withh no problems. I would say that Norton is just overprotective.

Did you use the same website as I linked for the 5 files?? Or can you give a link to where you got them??

Gunnarr, if you have Windows 7 or 8 you could make use of the default antivirus, Windows Defender or try AVG (there's a free version if memory serves). Also you should download the best antimalware around, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Norton is labeling it as virus based on community ratings on the files, that is, people reported the files as dangerous. But who knows...

I took your advice for the malwarebytes thing, that was easy!

And thank you for the further advice

Hey everyone

I installed the game in a different place, (went with C drive, then Games )

I followed the instructions here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160118

and downloaded this file from here:

http://www.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_silent_hunter_3.shtml

rld-sh14.rar

but when I unzipped it in a blank folder, Norton detirmined the files to be unsafe and removed them. Are they viruses in that file? (maybe the download has been tampered with?)

I don't know what to do now
Been using them for years. Reinstalled again yesterday from GCW, and all good according to Avast.

Hey guys!

I finally got it working!

I went into my norton settings and told it to individually restore those files, and to not try to remove them again.

I clicked to play, and there is no cd in, and it works!

So, problem solved!

Thank you to everyone that responded!

Now to install some mods and get so excited I do not sleep at my correct time... which is 6 AM...

oh and btw, I wanted to play Silent Hunter 3 before 4, since I don't want to feel a downgrade in graphics if I had went SH4 to SH3
