So I was watching all the new videos this morning on world of warships, praying that soon ill get accepted for closed beta, when I started thinking back of when I used to play Enigma: Rising tide. The more and more I thought about it the more I wanted to play it. Unfortunately the new windows I have will not run it.
So long story short, Im left wondering what is out there for surface command sims like enigma rising tide. I know there is battle stations pacific but that's more of a fleet oriented. What I really want is like silent hunter goes to the surface. where you command one ship as captain. Anybody have any suggestions besides mods for SH?
Unfortunately, not really anything modern and particularly simulation-y. Have you looked into World of Warships or the (soon-to-be-made) naval part of War Thunder? Those sound like they might be good for you, although they're both massively-online games.

I still occasionally play Enigma on my windows 7 laptop. It's fun. :woot:
I'd love an HD remake/overhaul someday.

If you could have a new game similar to Enigma, what would you want to change/improve about it?

You wouldn't believe how hard I've been trying to get into world of warships closed beta.
And as for what I'd like in a game like enigma, I loved it's interface, and how you could order the crew to battlestations or take control of guns yourself. I also loved the depth of the gameplay. What I would change though was make it more historically accurate. The whole prewar America vs Germany vs some weird combo of Japan and the uk didn't fit. Make it based off of real naval battles. Also I would have liked if they added more controllable ship types, and ships in general. We never saw any cruisers or carriers, and there is a huge gap between destroyers and battleships.
With the fairly good work they've done, I'd say someone should get ubi to take what they learned with silent hunter and make a similar surface ship game.

They tried with Destroyer Command...but I doubt we'll ever see another good naval release from Ubi...

It certainly is a forgotten part of the genre, and I constantly wish for one good quality WWII surface game.
I liked Enigma well enough, but the alternative universe/archaic designs weren't my thing. Between it and Destroyer Command, there was too much emphasis on smaller vessels/small battles IMO.
World of Warships seemed interesting enough, but from my perspective it's going to be absolute trash in the end. Maybe not a popular opinion, but running BBs around like speedboats, shooting at 500yds away, damage meters, etc. is a waste of time. For sim fans, I don't know why WoWs wouldn't be a hard pass.
Destroyer Command i keep installed in one my desktop PCs for that naval battles nostalgia. I'm also resurrecting an old desktop to install Win98 to exclusively play older games and sims such as SSI FIGHTING STEEL and many others.:Kaleun_Los:
What theater interests you guys the most for WW2 era surface battles? Atlantic, Pacific? Destroyer Command's career was fun in the Pacific, but stressful in the Atlantic only because I could never figure out how to properly judge a sub's depth on the sonar.

I'm more keen on Pacific theatre surface battles, but atlantic battles don't come too much far behind. I agree with the Atlantic campaign in DC being a bit stressful. The fletcher mod really improved gameplay IMHO (reducing shell hit probability) making surface battles last longer and the range finding was no longer done by laser :haha: as same as the laser guided AI depth charges did always explode at the exact uboat's depth in SHII. Modding also helped with this depth charge issue.

Oh, I'm with you on that entirely! It's just that it's really the closest you get today, unfortunately :(
For the moment, surface combat games have moved into the realms of either arcade/MOBA-style play, or into the realm of tokens-on-a-map strategic wargames. I'm optimistic something will come around eventually, though.

I think you guys would like our game, Atlantic Fleet, when it comes out. It's a lot closer in spirit to Great Naval Battles than World of Warships.

Great that should do it then, I'll stay on the lookout for release. :salute:

I'm right with you there: I still pick up old discs consigned by others to second-hand stores to run on my old desktop, and have discovered many eminently playable, enjoyable treasures.
And just as SH3 is still top rated by many after ten years... in the world of flight simming (despite all-new platforms like X-Plane) many people have stuck with their old FS9 (Microsoft's "Flight Simulator 2004") as their mainstay; newest isn't always best, for many reasons.
Destroyer Command runs well on that pc too, as does Enigma.

What ever happened to Knights of the Sea (I think that's correct)? Was that not a PT boat simulator or something

I still have Destroyer Command running under Windows 7.
I made several copies as backup on an Exterior hard drive. this way I was able to add most of the mods I wanted they have in the Download section here.
And should I have any problems with the mods, I can always go back and recopy the originals again and try to redo them again.
I got the Kriegsmarine and Sealords mods added, which allows you play the big ships of the German navy. And missions in the Atlantic.
A few years ago, I came across another mod Italian. MARE NOSTRUM. A great mod with well detailed Italian ships. Missions in the Meditterrean.
With the added mods for water, sky, land, sun, the game runs and looks a lot better than when it first came out.
I'm enjoying the playability of Destroyer Command for now, since there are not too many naval sims out other than Silent Hunter. Way too much submarine sims and not enough Surface action.
Keep an eye out for Atlantic Fleet coming out.
Destroyer Command still remains the only playable naval sim for me to play. It may have some gliches in it, but still a worthwhile game.
I downloaded the extra mods like Sealords and Kriegsmarine which allow you to play and command the big ships of the German Navy in World War Two. Like Bismarck, Graf Spee, Scharnhorst. etc.
There are other mods in the Download section worth looking into.
Also click on the following link to the old, original Subsim Download mods
http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches_sh2.html#destrcommand
I also have the Italian mod, MARE NOSTRUM, with missions in the Meditterrean Sea. Command ships of the Italian Navy and British.
I'm not sure if Mare Nostrum is still available. I still have the executable file
on my computer as a backup should anything happen.
I have othe naval sims like Fighting Steel, Enigma Rising Tide, but Windows 7 seems to interfere in trying to play them.
With the new online game World of Warships, I keep getting this CRITICAL ERROR OCCURRED message popping up each time I try to load the game.
Another naval sims to look into is ATLANTIC FLEET/PACIFIC FLEET that is suppose to be better than World of Warships. Has historical value to it.
