Ok, now i'm convinced, i will give SH4 a try . Now two question,

First, is the add on for the uboat a must ? Not just for the u boat but for the patches that come with it ?

Lastly. Wich mode should i consider installing first ? I'm more enclined toward a super mod than a lot of single ones.

I've taken a look at the mods page and two seems to stand out Scaf and Maxoptics.

Version 1.5 is a must, since most of the mega mods are built around this version of the game, plus this patches the game up to date, fixing a bunch of bugs in the stock version.

As far as mods, it depends on what you're looking to get out of the sim. If a more realistic (does not always mean harder) angle is what you want, consider RFB. Another great mod is TMO, which toughens things up (possibly more than reality) causing you to act and think in a more realistic manner. FOTRS is also another great mod to consider. You could also add RSRD to your mods list to add realistic shipping traffic to the game. No more arcade style target rich environment. Now you will need to search for targets in historical shipping lanes. There are many other smaller mods as well to add to the immersion of the sim. Just be sure when choosing mods, that they are compatible with each other or big headaches will be the result. Also, be sure to use JSGME to install/uninstall mods.

Version 1.5 is a must...

Absolutely!!

As you're already familiar with Sub sim's I don't think you'll need GFO (Game fixes Only mod).
Real Fleet Boats, Trigger Maru 2.5, Fall Of The Rising Sun, Operation Monsun are probably Mega Mods you'd want. Run Silent Run Deep is a addon which adds historical traffic and battles to the game, it can be added over Real Fleet Boats, Trigger Maru 2.5 or can be used as a standalone over stock game.
Just be careful which version you select, every Mega Mod needs its own version of RSRD.
Also check, depending on the Mega Mod you select, if there are patches for them.

Ship Center Accuracy Fix is a older Mod of CapnScurvy and I would really suggest using his 'latest' release, which is Optical Targeting Correction its an improvement of SCAF. There is no version for RFB so it can only be used with TMO 2.5 and Stock.
Max Optics is a Mod which gives you bigger zoom levels on periscope and TBT but is less realistic (good if you have poor eyesight like me).

Final note: (prolly know this but better safe then sorry).
I'd recommend making a backup of the Data folder and make a snapshot with JSGME, you'll be adding, removing and overlapping Mods quit a bit at first and you don't want to mess up 'that' folder, having a reference (snapshot) to compare the Data folder with is a good way of keeping track of folder corruption. Having to reinstall the game cause it doesn't run correctly anymore is something you don't want.

Bear in mind it's one or the other. You can't have both on the same install.

I love them both for different reasons so I have dual installs so that I can run each mega mod.

I recently had this same deliberation (which mod to use) & I will share my insights.
I prefer the "gameplay" of RFB but like the UI of TMO. The only thing that keeps me using TMO is OTC. Capnscurvy did a masterful job on it & I just have a hard time giving it up. If only he would update it to RFB 2.0 I for one would be pleased as punch.

One word of caution when experimenting with mods. As as been mentioned make a copy of the data folder because it's frightfully easy to pork your instal when messing with allot of mods & be plagued with CTDs. When using one of these Mega mods they will already have nearly every mod you could want incorporated into them. It becomes a case of less being more.

Ok, I'm not decided yet between RFB and TMO. I'm more enclined on gameplay than realistic mod. I'll check it some more. Should i start with Websters GFO first ? Or is it included in these two super mods ?

Some will quarrel with me for saying this, but if you are asking about this, you're not ready for TMO. The mod was designed to be difficult.

GFO is just what the name implies; it fixes the major game bugs.

RFB changes the game to provide a realistic game.

TMO takes some liberties to make the game more challenging.

All are good mods, but they do different things.

Thx , that sum it up pretty well for me. I dont want a more difficult game right now. So it will be between GFO and RFB, cant i have both ?

Both are multi-faceted mods; i.e. mega-mods. Use one or the other. Mixing mega-mods is sure to cause problems.

Mods work by changing out specific game files. If you were to enable GFO, then RFB, RFB would be overwriting some/most of the files GFO already changed. This would not make your game better. You would just have a hodge-podge of changes, that were neither GFO or RFB.

I would recommend these:

RFB_2.0 .................................................. .......(Real Fleet Boat)
RFB_2.0_Patch_23April2010
RSRDC_RFB_V575 .......................................(Run Silent Run Deep Campaign)
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
Improved Ship Physics 2.15 .......................(with Patch)

This provides many improvements with only five mods.

RFB (Real Fleet Boat) aims to achieve the most realistic gameplay and changes many elements.

RSRDC (Run Silent Run Deep Campaign) changes shipping traffic and missions to historical volume/pattern. Stock has excessive traffic and isn't well configured.

ISP makes the diving, turning, acceleration, battery performance, and sea-keeping of your boat more realistic. Make sure you read the documentation and install the patch, if you use it.

Note that you must have v1.5 of Silent Hunter 4 to run these mods (as most others).

Thx again, i'm still playing stock, but i will probably install these mods very soon. The game is already playable as it is. Just cant wait to see the changes these mods will provide.
