View Full Version : Awards in Campaign

Greetings Captains,
I am wondering if there is any rhyme or reason to the way that awards are generated in campaign mode. Is there a specific matrix at work or is it random?
I just started a new campaign last night & on my 1st patrol I had a very good take sinking a little over 30k of tonnage comprising 5 merchants & 1 seaplane tender. I was never hit & only came under depth charge attach twice; they came close enough to rattle the boat but not do any damage.
You can imagine my surprise when I got back to port & was awarded a CMH! Sure it was a great patrol but IMO it wasn't that great. My shooting wasn't all that spectacular either with about a 60% hit ratio.
I should mention that I am running RFB & RSRDC plus running full realism.

From what I can tell it seems to be random, i've recieved pretty much every medal within 1 year of the war. Granted I play on easy mode for now but I tend to get 1 medal every patrol. Perhaps it's simply based on the total tonnage you have sunk.

It seems fairly random to me as well.

It tells me that all the time, I can't remember the exact wording but it's something like extreme bravery and aggressiveness or some such. I was even awarded a purple heart for sinking a bunch of fishing boats and Sampans with my deck gun on one patrol. It's either random, based on tonnage, or they just like giving out medals haha.

I think it's random. I received the DSC in 2 consecutive patrols; the first was a crazy-long cruise in the Solomons totalling over 600,000 tons, then next was a brief run to Home Waters for less than 30,000.

No it's not random. The award system is based on tonnage sunk.
However, the stock game is pooched beyond belief. I don't know what RFB 2.0 does to the award system (if anything; I know RSRDC does nothing). The stock game not only awards "make believe" medals, but when you should receive their lowest ranked medal.....you'll get their highest award! The medals are switched in the hierarchy that they should be awarded.
......was awarded a CMH! (Congressional Medal of Honor)
.......I am running RFB & RSRDC.....
I'm guessing RFB does have the modded authentic medals......but I'm also guessing it doesn't fix the hierarchy order of the awards.

Well all I know is on return to Pearl, and 50 miles out, I saved the game. For that patrol I got a Navy Cross. Reloaded the save and again entered Pearl and for that patrol I got a Bronze Star. Maybe it was my mods, dunno, but it sure seemed random having such a large spread of awards for the same tonnage and the same ships sunk.

It is eye candy and worthless. Medals are for those who seek approval from others ... not for those who get the job done.

My intention for this post was not to seek approval from others but to get an understanding of why it happened. As a former military man I have a certain reverence for CMH holders & truth be told I was kinda disgusted that I got it.

I was under the impression that your OTC deals with the medals as well

That's why I don't have the CMH as the highest award with "U.S. Medals Fix II (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=142241)". Just not right to award the CMH for tonnage sunk.
Neither is the Distinguished Service Medal.....it was for "exceptionally mertorious service to the government in a duty of great responsibility". In my opinion, this criteria does not hold true of a sub Captain, and especially not of an enlisted crewman. What I have found is the medal is usually bestowed to senior "Navy Flag and Marine Corps General Officers" not rank and file sub Captains and definitely not to an enlisted man.

Yes, it does. It has the same upc files as the U.S. Medals Fix II

Gotcha - on review, it appears I was getting the Navy Cross, not the DSC

I was quickly reading the U.S. Medals Fix II thread and remembered there is also a criteria of ship quality that plays into effect of the awards. In other words a CV will rank a higher award than two CA's....even if there's more tonnage with the two Heavy Cruisers than the one Carrier. Also, the number of successful patrols plays a part as well.
As far as RFB, I don't know what they have done to the awards. I see I made a mod for an earlier version of RFB, but I don't think RFB 2.0 incorporated my changes to the UPC files, which corrects the hierarchy order of the medals. They may be still using the stock game files.

Is it tonnage or renown that counts?

I don't think specific ship renown has much to do with the award system. As this earlier reply in the U.S. Medals Fix thread states (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=951154&postcount=10), there doesn't seem to be a connection.
Tonnage, ship quality (decided by Type rather than renown), successful patrol quantity, I believe make up the qualifications for the system. AND, I believe the option for game Realism plays a role as well. The higher the Realism....the greater the modifier to the system.

I don't think anyone thought you were looking for approval, just asking a legitimate question. The stock game has many flaws, the medals are just one of the more noticeable flaws.

TMO does away with the CMH also. It would be nice after getting a certain amount of tonnage, with certain ships involved, but not important. Overall, I am glad the mods get rid of it. Getting several of them for mediocre patrols gets a bit tiring. Is it tonnage or renown that counts?
It's tonnage. Renown is a real, in game award for getting so much tonnage, and maybe certain types of ship.

Just a follow up on the award/medal question for RFB 2.0.
I found LukeFF does not have the tier/hierarchy that "U.S.Medals Fix II" uses.....soooo, the RFB award system will respond much like the stock game. Screwed up big time!
Sorry guys, I don't have a mod to fix RFB 2.0....nor, do I want to. :03:

You're breaking my heart Cap'n! :Kaleun_Crying:
You're OTC is the only thing that keeps me playing TMO. You live 30mi from where I work. I will keep you in beer while you work on OTC for RFB! :Kaleun_Cheers:
Seriously though, not meaning to hijack my own thread but is there a way to tone down the AI in TMO? Last night my beloved pigboat got creamed by a DD that spotted me as I was approaching a convoy. Said DD was at a measure 6500yds away on a moonless night in high seas. No kidding!!! TICKED me off!

I'm sure we could find a spot somewhere along I-75 to catch a drink!!
But, I'd rather make my own Mega Mod than fix someone else's.:-?

I actually got the purple heart recently. Thought it was only possible to get posthumanously. Naiively approached a big merchant ship and it turned out to be pretty well armed. Battled it out with deck guns, and had to bug out. Spun around and sunk it with a couple torpedos.
Got back to port with 94% hull damage. Got the purple heart, and a message saying "the mechanics were scratching their heads as to how this thing is still afloat" or something along those lines. I was offered the option to get a new sub or "end my career on a high note". I guess the old Porpoise wasn't salvageable. I got a new salmon class early for my trouble.

The Purple Heart is awarded for being wounded in action. :sunny:
