View Full Version : Need some recognition help, mateys! :)
Hi mates!
Today there was a special rendevouz out by the coast where i live here in Northern Norway. The Norwegian coast guard met up with a submarine, but since i know more about WWII-subs than the things afloat (or sinking) today,
i was wondering if someone could tell me what kind of class this submarine is?

Could be a Type 209? :hmmm:
(Really, they all look the same, just pick one. :O:)
Hi ol`mate! :D
I`m not sure about the 209: This one looks much longer, and the conning tower is placed in the front, while the 209 has it almost midships.
I was thinking about this being a Los Angeles class maybe, because of what i belive is the sonar in front of the tower, and it`s distance from the tower.

Conning tower looks too small comparative to the hull size for the 209... also it seems the length abaft of the conning tower to the stern is too long to be the 209...
resembles a trafalgar but then again for the trafalgar the bow looks too long forward of the conning tower
:hmmm:

possible its a los angeles class
So true, GoldenRivet; I agree with you on it not being a Trafalgar class. And currently it looks more like an Los Angeles-class than anything else i have seen.. But i`m not 100% sure. :)
Yeah, that does look like a 688i, I'd say that 'sonar' at the front is quite possibly actually a crewman, the LA boats don't have anything forward of the conning tower like that, and the proportions are wrong for a Trafalgar. So I'd wager it's a Groton or Norfolk boat.
Yeah, it could be a crewman, since they are waiting for that small coastguard boat to arrive, but i also found this pic, showing a LA-class with a sonar thingy in the front:

Huh, well spotted. That's a Flight I or II boat though, with the bow planes on the conning tower, the boat in your pic is a Flight III, providing she is a 688, and I'm not sure if the Flight III has that bit. :hmmm:

I'd say a 688 :hmmm:
I wonder if this could be the sub, that repeatedly is the reason to ramp up the scandinavian navies (aka "russian sub" sightings :O:)
Good question, Catfish :hmmm:
Some weeks ago we had a big military exercise up here, Army, Air force and navy, from several NATO countries, but ended March 18th. And when cities like Tromsų is visited by foreign naval ships etc, they usually announce it in the local media. And, since the "temperature" between NATO and Russia currently are pretty hot, i wouldn`t expect such a meeting like this in broad daylight, just at the shores of a small community with 600 people. :hmm2:
Here is the app. location for the rendevouz:http://s14.postimg.org/ilrzl4osh/688_Coast_Location.jpg

Thanks for posting! Gorgeous landscape .. :)
I read the US has 'inofficially' tested some smaller subs in swedish waters some time ago, but not as part of a NATO exercise (and sure no 688is).

Could be part of increasing the visibility of the US Navy in the Barents.
The Roosevelt and Churchill stopped by Portsmouth last week, they've gone down into the Med though.
It could be that she's heading our way to take part in Joint Warrior 2015, it's due to start on the 11th and features 55 warships and submarines and 70 aircraft. The USS Anzio is on her way over too.
Apparently SAC (or whatever it's called now) has also been throwing the odd BUFF over the Arctic and North Sea regions in Exercise 'Polar Growl'.
It's all happening...

And I'm just sitting here with the odd Sea King or WAH-64 for company.
Dammit USAF why did you shut Bentwaters... :nope: After you'd just refurbed the runway too... :dead:

I've blown the picture up and if those aren't windows on the front of the sail my money would be on it being an improved LA Class.

Hi Seth, nice to hear from you :yep::up:
Not sure regarding your question though
