Is that ping audible or for effect. I usually try to avoid using it when in a situation where I need to get deeper, as I do not want to let escorts know where I am!

You can ping all day and night, no escort will hear that - in the game.

There have been debates over the historical accuracy of this. But it is generally agreed that use of the depth sounder can not be detected by enemy listening devices. And AFAIK, no mod has ever tried to change this. How you play it is up to you.

OK, I try to make my statement clearer:
In the game you can ping all day and night, no escort will hear that; there are no AI routines implemented for that.

Sorry, danasan, I didn't intend to contradict your post. It was absolutely correct. I just tried to expand on this topic a bit. because there has been discussion - inconclusive, IIRC - about whether it had historical justification.

No offense taken at all! :salute:
But when I re-read my first statement myself (English is not my mothertongue), I thought it could be misinterpreted. I wasn't talking about the historical aspects at all.
From my point of view and from what I understand, somebody (escort) would have had to actually listen all the time for any pings to find one, or by "accident", regarding real life.
I really don't expect any real life Uboat commander asking for "depth under keel" during an attack with warships on the scene (because of the ping).
I hope that makes sense.

I'm not sure about that, I have used the echo sounder for shallow depth keeping to test if the escorts -so long as they are actively looking for you- will home in on your depth checker.
I don't play dead is dead, so I tested it out deliberately to provoke them into coming closer. It seemed to work. They had to be fairly close already, and searching for me. Which is true enough to historical. It's the same kind of technology that they use in sonar, just pointed at the ground. They could hear your sonar beam if you pinged it off their hull, they way they do with you.
It would probably sound like an ASDIC ping to their hydrophone operator.
