I am considering this realism upgrade, but I have been having the usual problem with GWX CTD. I finally fixed it and have not been having problems at all.

-it is the dvd version with 1.4 patch

-my mods are:
Periscope TDC 1.2
Das boot clothes
GWX 16Km env.
GWX no medals on crew

I have had great success and on my third patrol.

will this h.sie hurt my progress? can I upload this mod while in a career? any help and knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Most importantly, will this hamper my ability to load a saved career?

First, V16B1-Patch-Kit is NOT a mod. You can't just drop it in with JSGME and, presto, it's working. There is a certain amount of setup required, including editing some game files This is especially true if you are playing GWX3 as your base mod. You also have to run a small program which modifies your sh3.exe, the game engine. (that's what actually installed the patches.) None of this work is difficult, nor does it require any special knowledge of computer software. It does require patient, careful work and a willingness to exactly follow well-written instructions.

I suggest you download V16B1-Patch-Kit and read the setup instructions. If you are comfortable with them, go ahead. If not, there is a tool devised by Blitzkrieg called SH3 Front End which will manage your complete SH3 installation - multiple installations, in fact. Among a lot of other things, SH3F will automatically set up h.sie's patches for you.

As to your question: You can install the patches in mid-career, from any in-port save, with no problems. But absolutely NOT in mid-patrol! Changing the sh3.exe WILL result in CTDs when you attempt to load a mid-patrol save, guaranteed.

As to whether it will impede your progress: It will certain add a number of fairly accurate constraints to your decisionmaking, which may well affect your tonnage score and your survivability. (All of these constraints are individually selectable. You don't have to use any of them.) But then, that is the purpose of the patches. If you are not propared to change your playing style somewhat, you may not want to use them.

Good luck and good hunting!

i have been reading about this "front end" and if I read it right, it says it will do all the work for h.sie realism mod? is that true??? if so I think that is the way to go.
