I'm in my patrol area bf19. 1 am and very dark, i spot a passenger boat and i have difficulty with the flag. I click on the ship in my Notepad and its says passenger liner or something but nothing about its nationality. I try to come closer but the seas was quite rough and still no clue about the flag. I crippled it with two torpedo. Now i think i see a Denmark flag... not even sure if its allied or neutral ... What do you do in these situation ? beside reading a history book ? ( earlier i spot an italian and a netherlands boat, i know these were allied to Germany at some point.)

If I recall in the the periscope or UZO view, you'll find a pull-down list in the upper left corner showing all the status of war of all concerned nations with Germany by date.
But then it may have been the F1 Key too. :hmmm:

Given its a game, there is no right or wrong way to approach the situation.
Personally speaking, i use the flag chart that others mentioned above. Once either my crew or I identify a ship, i go to periscope depth and creep in on her and do my best to identify the type of ship as well as the flag she is flying.
I suppose if you play the way i do when it comes to picking your targets it may become frustrating. I cant tell you how many juicy merchants I've crept up on, only to see they are flying a neutral flag.
The whole prize rule thing confuses me (mostly because i have not yet read into it much) but you can't really identify the type of cargo being carried in the game anyway. That's another reason i stay away from neutral ships and send enemy ships to the bottom :)

Yeah, I've had some "oopsie" moments myself. I recently sunk a German-flagged cargo ship. Same problem...creeping up on it in the dark in rough seas. Cant see the flag.
If BdU wants to "ask" me about hitting a neutral later on, I will just say "it was dark and he blundered onto a shot meant for someone else". Who's not gonna believe that?

It turns out that BdU was a lot more tolerant than the stock game when neutrals were attacked. There was a pretty thorough discussion of BdU's historical response when a U-boat sank neutral (or even friendly!) ships.

There are also some suggestions on that thread for making the game's response more historically appropriate.

the U-boat commander's handbook always recommends leaning towards attack! It was a ship, blackened, in enemy waters. you did good commander!
