SH4 windows 8.1 help

Hi,
I've been looking through these forums for a solution, but could not get it to work.

I've had no problems running SH4 with windows 8.1. I've ran vanilla, TMO and WDAD.

This past weekend, I had to reset the computer. C drive was formatted and windows reinstalled. Now I cannot run SH4 at all. I did a clean install up to 1.5 uboat missions. It would not even start.

I tried the compatibility program with vista and as administrator. Nothing.

It worked before.... And that was without any compatibility adjustments. ..with the same hardware, too.

Any ideas?

I have windows 8.1, 8 GB RAM, nvidia gtx 760.

I run a Steam copy on Windows 7 so I'm really just launching a spread into the dark here but I do have a few ideas.

Did you install to a non-Program Files path?

Did you install DirectX as part of the install? (Even though I'm running 11 games that came with 9.0c seem to screw up unless I run the installer that came with them.)

Do you have to run the game as installed once before you patch it to get the options files and such set properly?

Do you have a power-saving feature on your graphics card that you left on? Or some other wonky setting in your graphics control panel?

Did you update all your drivers?

Is SH4.exe large address aware?

Did you curse it like a proper sailor?

Did you install to a non-Program Files path? - I did the install on a different drive than C, but I think I called that one Program Files, too. mmm

Do you have to run the game as installed once before you patch it to get the options files and such set properly? - No, I inserted the Cd, installed (1.0 version, I assume) then inserted U-missions (Patch to 1.5). Then I tried running it with nothing happening. BUT, my previous SH4 (mod versions) was still in another drive, which ran without any problems BEFORE the reinstall of Windows. Now that doesn't work either. I will uninstall then re-install in a different file and run once - then patch it.

Is SH4.exe large address aware? - No, I found out about that while looking for a solution to this problem. But, I never used it before and SH4 ran good.

Other things that I need to check:

See if the read only box is checked.

I read something about Nvidia Experience messes this up. I have to see if it is installed. Probably, since it is a fresh installation.

Also, I read about "text size" being a problem. Not really sure what that means or how to check it.

Text size is Control Panel > Display. You want 100%, 96 DPI.

I got it to work!

It was a simple fix....

After researching further in these forums I realized that this was not a unique problem and there are fixes for this.

All it was, was to simply uncheck the "read only" box and use the compatibility wizard for Vista.

It started right up after the screen flickered a bit.

I also realized that even though I thought I did not see SH4 in the task manager as running, it actually WAS running near the bottom of the window. That's probably why I thought nothing was happening when I clicked on the exe file.

Now, I have TMO, WDAD, and vanilla up and running!
But anyways, thanks for the tips!
