time to posts about the free agency moves going on

the draft is almost here so start posting the "my team is going to the super bowl" or irrational fear mongering and "the sky is falling" posts

The Patriots front office continues to mystify us New England fans. First they apply the franchise tag to the kicker of all people then they let Revis and Vereen go free agent and now both of them are off to New York teams.

I'm still trying to figure out just what the heck (pardon my language) the Saints are doing! Trading their best pass catcher (Graham) a good young talent (Stills), and an offensive lineman (Grubbs), while signing another running back (Spiller)???

I hope Loomis and Payton know what they're doing. Especially with all those draft picks.

:hmmm:

:hmmm:

well so far I agree with all of the moves with the exception that they should have gotten rid of graham after the lawsuit last year when they could have gotten even more draft picks for him (a #1 and possibly a #2 as well that year and a #3 added the next year) and they would have not given up the big signing bonus and large amount of guaranteed money he got from them.

add to that the fact that if they didn't sell their souls to keep him, they would have been able to keep sproles rather then be forced to let him go because they didn't have the money to keep him because all the money went to graham, they also lost a good offensive starting lineman and defensive starting lineman because all the money went to graham, graham got the money so they all had to go along with the saints ability to be competitive on the field.

unger
unger, well he has had some injuries so there is a "small" question mark there, but he is a pro bowl center who is the best in the league at run blocking and "nobody gets near my quarterback" pass blocking kind of center the saints have desperately needed for many years now. trading him straight up for graham, even with no draft picks, would have been ok with me for getting this kind of talent in the middle of the line.

browner
browner, what more needs to be said, he is the shut down corner the saints have desperately needed for a long time and will be a great immediate upgrade to our defense

spiller
spiller is a younger version of Darren sprolles and all the pundants agree he was just what the saints needed, he is a reggie bush daren sprolles type guy who is younger, stronger and faster then both of them, he just hasn't been in the league long enough or used in that role enough to be as talkedabout a player but make no mistake, this guy is very talented and a hell of a steal for what the saints signed him for.

graham
graham has been alligator arming passes for the last 3 years and hasn't reached out to catch a pass since his rookie year. if any team goes to press coverage and bumps him at the line he gives up and doesn't even try to run his route at all.

yes he is talented, but far from worth the money he demands or the money they gave him and the other tight ends we have now do a better job of getting open and going up and catching those tough passes where they might get hit on that graham decides to not even try to catch.

shawn payton and drew brees have used a one man game plan for the last 2 years in a row, throw to graham even if he is covered by 4 guys and so what if it gets intercepted or run the ball now and then just so graham isn't thrown to on every play, just 2 out of 3 of them. they haven't gotten predictable, they have become a one man team, stop him and the saints go home losers and all the other teams know this.

before graham brees was known to throw the ball to anyone who gets open so defenses couldn't stop us because even no name receivers would get the ball yet all that changed when they got graham and decided he was THE guy and no other plan for success was even considered so when teams stopped graham by simply bumping him at the line the saints lose and only score 7 or 10 points.

with graham being gone the saints will finally have to come up with a true game plan that involves the whole team and a strategy that can be changed or altered on the spot if things don't go well.

stills
stills is and was a good receiver but not a great one so getting him exchanged for a desperately needed draft pick to help our sad sack defense and get some offensive line help was a very good move IMHO.

grubbs
grubbs was a bust ever since he got here, he was better then the other guys around him but that's sadly pathetic and not a compliment suggesting he was anything but a mediocre talent at the position. most analists agree he got beat regularly and was a large part of why brees got sacked so much last year and he never lived up to his potential or the hopes coaches had for him here.

the 2015 draft ???
what is most scary so far is that in the past few drafts the saints have shown themselves to be beyond clueless at drafting good talent so now that they have the picks they need to improve this team, will they pick wisely or select bad players as they have consistently done the last few years.

And a Linebacker who may be better in our 3-4 defense than he was in Miami's 4-3.

The Pats just let Vince Wilfork go to the Texans leaving us even more mystified about what they're trying to do here.

This guys biggest challenge is durability. Can he stay healthy for the season?

Packers have not been to splashy yet which is no surprise, they usually build more from within. Nice to see Cobb and Bulaga back in the fold.

the thing I never get about the vikes is they always seam to be surprised and unprepared when its their turn to pick in the draft and sometimes they have to be skipped over because the time runs out and they have to come back "after the fact" to make their pick 2 or 3 spots after it was their turn. I never could figure out what they were thinking over there on draft day. :hmmm:

anyway, speaking of the vikes, I think he wants out because he wants a superbowl ring and knows it aint happening with the vikes during his career.

who out there would want Adrian Peterson on their team and at what price, seeing as he may only have 2 or 3 productive years left in him so what kind of draft picks do you think he is worth?

Probably a lot more than the Patriots would pay given their history on such matters.

Vikes ownership/management is retarded.
Next question.

Within 15 minutes of getting home last night, I completely forgot about it.:haha: Anything the NFL does now, other than games, is just manufactured drama for sports writers. I guess you gotta use that journalism degree for something.:dead:

On a side note, I wonder how many BJs Chunky will give to get Mariota?:hmmm: He's practically given away the city.:haha: I will laugh my ass off, if he's another duck QB bust. Joey2.0?

yep, I forgot about it myself, went to bed around 11pm to see the first day draft picks on the news, oh well , its not like we missed anything lol

as to the eagles, sounds like he offered everything he had and was willing to gave anything more they wanted, maybe even the whole roster

from AP:

But the Titans passed up a lot to take Mariota.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported (http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/chip-kelly-misses-landing-marcus-mariota--but-could-that-be-good-for-eagles-004527761.html) that the Eagles offered two first-round picks, a third-round pick, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, linebacker Mychal Kendricks, cornerback Brandon Boykin and “more” to the Titans. That is a lot. Like … an insane amount. Cox, Kendricks and Boykin are all young defenders who would either start right away or contribute plenty. (A few reports on Friday, including The MMQB's Peter King (http://mmqb.si.com/2015/05/01/marcus-mariota-tennessee-titans-nfl-draft/) and Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane (https://twitter.com/Jeff_McLane), said players were never involved in the offer but the Eagles would have had to offer more than three first-round picks to move up.) And the Titans did have a young quarterback in Zach Mettenberger (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/27706/), who showed some good things as a rookie last year. Tennessee could have justified taking the mega-offer and rolling with Mettenberger for one more year. I guess he thinks if he puts all the players from his college team on the field, then they can somehow magically win like he did with them in college lol.

As a Steeler fan this sucks. Also much as I hate to admit it until it came out he destroyed his cell phone I was actually on Brady's side. However that just smells like someone trying to hide something.

That's because the NFL went out of it's way to misrepresent what happened to that cell phone. Brady and his lawyer had already told the Wells that under no circumstances would they give them his cell phone so it hardly matters what they did with it later on. As for actually destroying it, that is not at all an unusual practice for the rich and famous. I'm sure there is a lot of non football related stuff on Tom Brady's cell phone that a certain element within the league office that would just love to leak out to embarrass him. I wouldn't have given those people my personal property either.

Really, this has been a mountain out of a molehill hatchet job against the Patriots by the NFL and certain sports media figures from the very start, whether it's Mortensen deliberately exaggerating the psi levels in the AFC game balls or the so called "independent" Wells report. If anything this should have been just a $5k equipment tampering fine like the NFL rules list for such an offense but instead this becomes a 7 month long media circus witch hunt that I and many of us in Patriots Nation believe more and more was just a dirty attempt to hamstring the Patriots enough that the rest of the league has a chance against them.

As for the investigation itself it would have been more competently conducted by the Keystone Cops. This is what, the 4th time in a row that the courts have tossed out Goodells punishments for similar reasons? He might be listed in the CBA as the arbitrator but that does not give him the right to arbitrarily award penalties. That does not give him the right to conduct biased investigations designed to come up with a pre determined outcome. Just ask the Dolphins coaches how Wells conducted the interviews in the Imbroglio scandal.

Seriously a quarter pound PSI loss in a ball that has apparently never been tested after half a games use is equivalent to using anabolic steroids when it comes to penalties? Screw them. Goodell, Pasch and Vincent need to go before they embarrass the league again.

Yep and that is partially our fault. The Pats owner Robert Kraft was all about accepting league punishment no matter how arbitrary or excessive when it was someone elses team under the gun but when it's his turn to get screwed over suddenly he has a big issue with it. That's one big reason why he's gotten no sympathy from Jerry Jones and the other team owners.

BTW has anyone heard what (if anything) the NFL intends to do to prevent balls from being tampered with in the future? Have any rules or standards been put in place to record the PSI of the footballs before, during and after the game?

Goodell has had his problems ... I agree with the NFL players union leave him alone without backing up claims.

This article is a year old, but time will tell.

Remember this lady: http://www.businessinsider.com/support-is-growing-for-condoleezza-rice-as-nfl-commissioner-2014-9

Support is growing for a campaign to draft Condoleezza Rice as Commissioner for the troubled National Football League (NFL).
American football, the country’s most popular sport and a bastion of macho male culture, has suffered one of the worst weeks in its history with three high-profile stars facing accusations of domestic violence.
The crisis has led to calls for Ms Rice, a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, to step in replace the beleaguered Roger Goodell as Commissioner.
