Latest coming over the wires is that he has passed away due to cancer - this from apparently reliable sources.

If true this can only be a good thing as I cannot see any other stepping up to the plate as vicious as he was. His extreme hatred for the US, Israel, the West was quite demonic to say the least.

Here's one that even most Iranians won't shed a tear, let alone me.

Here's hoping the next one is a lot more than the current pope

If true, who will replace? Will Irans position against ISIS strengthen or weaken?

Hmmm, Khamenei had his moments, but I'd say he was better than his predecessor, the Muslim Sean Connery.

Be interesting how the Assembly of Experts will go since they have an Acting Leader at the moment since their actual leader died late last year. Shahroudi is the current acting leader and he's not the most pleasant of people, it would be problematic if he became Ayatollah. :nope: It might go to Rafsanjani, which would please Argentina. :dead:

It's doubtful it will change. ISIS consider Shias to be infidels, and Iran is both ideologically and geopolitically at odds with them. That said, I don't think Iran ever made ISIS a priority. They're far more interested in ensuring their own influence in Iraq and Syria, and keeping any expansion of influence by Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states in check. That's not likely to change, either.

On the other hand: whatever his attitude, let's not celebrate yet. Sometimes what happens in these cases is that a leader dies and gets replaced by someone with even more hardline views, and I'm certain there's plenty of clerics like that in Iran.
