View Full Version : Stock SH3 with better graphics?

Hi - I've only just started playing SH3 and think it may be best for me to play it "stock" initially (maybe with the unofficial 1.6 patch (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=174225)), some sort of hi-res mod (I can run at 1080p, but don't want a distorted UI, if possible), and ideally other improved graphics (only, not gameplay).

Which hi-res mod and graphics improvements would work well with the stock version without changing gameplay? I have loads of RAM and a good GPU (Nvidia 970M), so should be able to run some graphics mods without things slowing down.

When Living Silent Hunter v6 comes out, I may move to that, but would like a more vanilla experience first, only with better graphics! :-)

Try Ahnenerbe's Wide GUI 1920 x 1080 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=215433)
Works with vanilla SH3, I believe. If there are distortions that bother you, (I don't use it so I wouldn't know of any), I'm not sure of a fix, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist.

How does this differ from SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b?

What jackjack linked is a full re-design of the HUD using refreances that were high definition. Injecting those dlls and cfg (and then editing the cfg for w/e resolution you desire) simply stretches the 1024x768 native game resolution across w/e native resolution you are running.

I'm in a similar boat. I have a 2560x1440 IPS panel and using the dll method made everything look like utter garbage. I think the best compromise you're going to see is what jackjack linked.

Okay, thanks, I'll give it a go!

I've just uploaded this so that you can have better graphics and other goodies in stock silent hunter III. It works for me, but who knows...

Thanks, though it doesn't seem to be possible to download this without giving 4shared details of one of my social media accounts, which I don't want to do...

Out of curiosity, what is it?
I downloaded it and very quickly browsed the files.
I think it's a custom "mod soup" centered around graphics enhacements and add-ons on many visual aspect of the game (crew uniforms, officers icons portrait, UI background screen, environment, terrain, maybe ships and plane models and the like...) ready to be installed above stock SH3.
It would be nice if, in the readme, there would be a list referencing the mods included... so one knows what he is uněsing and will be able to search the forum for the topics about each single mod included.

P.S.: For example, in my case: I noted the very nice officers portraits, I'd like to know who is the talended author(s) of these?

Did you have to supply details of a social media account to download it? There were so many "download" buttons on the screen, most *not* for the mod, that I wasn't sure if I clicked on the correct one!

I already had an account to 4shared, I started using it 3 years ago.

I've received a report regarding the link above, part of which reads "Misrepresents one download as "Adobe Flash Update" which it is not. The target download "stockSH3better.rar" actually loads "stockSH3Better.exe".

I'd suggest you think very carefully about potential risks to your computer etc. before downloading.

I've got no problem at all with that download.
It's a rar file of about 250 MB. Here, at work, we have Kaspersky AntiVirus (Server + client), a very good anti-virus suite, and it did not raised any warning at all.

Btw, are you sure you are clicking in the correct link in that page?

P.S.: in ant case, a summary mod list will still be very helpfull, if available...

So, which of the plethora of buttons on that page will actually load stockSH3better.rar? I thought I had tried them all and gotten nothing but crap.

BTW, this site is a real "Gotcha" for any unsophisticated noob. It is designed and intended to trick the unaware into downloading software they do not want. That software may - or may not - be harmful.

What this pack contains:

sky, wake and water textures, a new weather (GWX?)
pilots ejecting from parachute
new searchlights
most ships with modified values and some enhanced textures
new torpedos and torpedo damage textures
terrain texures
loading and menu screens (my monitor is 4:3. I'm not Chinese)
textures for harbours (also for workers, soldiers, nurses, etc)
particles underwater (you just need one file: cameras.val - included)
effect transition underwater-surface and my favourite zoom (both cameras and oricameras files - don't ask me why)
crew textures
explosions
incarcatura (cargo textures) and a few other things.

Perhaps some could make a better and organised pack out of this one. Just wanted to help. Sorry if I made a mess here with all this stuff.

Edit: Thanks for the clarification. Any chance you could post some screenshots maybe highlighting the improvements? Is this GWX compatable and additionally it doesn't seem JSGME compatible :X

It looks to be JSGME ready. In spite of what the readme implies, the directory structure is straight SH3, so JSGME should tuck it right in. And, of course, back up all files that are over-written.

My apologies. This seems to have a load of conflicts with various other mods - GWX and the Merchant Fleet mods in particular. I appreciate you posting it, hopefully it helps the OP. I'm going to hold off myself for the time being.

I see the difference now, Ahnenerbe's Wide GUI 1920 x 1080 mod is gorgeous on my 1080 laptop screen! :-)

BTW can I use Ahnenerbe's Wide GUI 1920 x 1080 with the 1.6 patch? Which should I install first?

Can both the above be used with the "Open hatch" Mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=104514)? I which order should I install these and will I need the 4Gb RAM patch too (I'm on Win 8.1 64 bit)?

Thanks for the help, this sounds a little bit much for me at the moment, just want to run on stock (maybe 1.6 unofficial patch) and make things a little prettier until LSH 6 comes out...

I have the 1.6 patch activated as the last mod (per the instructions that were provided). As far as the open hatch mod....i use FM's new interior and cant get that to work with the hatch mod...so...yeah

Is there more than one "interior" Mod then?

There is Diving Ducks 'Open Hatch' mod, which was the first. It allows you to open the hatch to the forward section.

There is Lucagaeta's 'Conning Tower Open Hatch' mod, which opens the hatch to the conning tower. I works with DD's 'Open Hatch'.

There is FlakMonkey's 'New Interiors' mod, which adds a complete interior except for the aft torpedo room. It incorporates DD's 'Open Hatch', so you use one or the other, but not both. 'Conning Tower Open Hatch' does not work with it.

There is also a Torpedo Room for the Type II, by MCHALO12.

Okay, think I have this working with just this installed (in this order) on Win 8.1 64 bit (I have 16Gb RAM):

1.6b Unofficial Patch inc. 4GB fix

The with JSGME:

Accurate German Flags
FM_NewInterior v2.1D
Ahnenerbe WideGui 1920 x 1080 Final

Anything else that's a "must have" cosmetic-wise that should work with this lot? e.g. Any hi-res U-Boat textures?

Would you mind sharing it with me?
I will then make it downloadable for EVERYONE.

Upload here please: UPLOAD TO THE SH3-ARCHiVE (http://tinyurl.com/SH3-Archive-Upload)
Sorry BL!TZKR!EG, but I can't comply!

The reason? I almost always use internet and download things during breaks at work, from my office, and the lan is behind a firewall that, in this case, has the site in his black list: Bannend site: tinyurl.com

Another reason is it will take forever, form here, to upload this 250 MB circa of zip file. Have you another loation/service to wich I can try to upload it (if you still didn't managed to get this file and still want it)?

Maybe upload to mediafire.com. Then set up a one-time download link. PM the link to BK.

Is mediafire accessible to you?

You all can beat me to death if you wish to do so, but I've never used JSGME-MOD or something.
Whenever I find something interesting, I just try it, one at a time, and then go and check if everything works (start the game, try museum, two or three missions, naval academy, career, etc.) Yes I know I'm doing things the wrong way...
