Several years ago, I posted a thread:

I have always held to this, however, I just received a Balao sub. 3rd mission out of Midway.
Told to report to an area outside Truk and await further orders.
On the way, received a message from ComSubPac, American bomber attack Rabal forcing six Japanese Aircraft Carriers to retreat to Truk for repairs.
Get to my area, and I'm informed I am at liberty to patrol and sink any shipping I find.
Great! I'm near truk, less than a day. I cruise over there.
BAM! I'm hit with the same "bug" again. I cannot tc greater then 32 or the game simply lags severely.
Has there been a "patch" or "fix" for this problem yet?

Have you tried TMO 2.5? I haven't had any issues with Truk in that mod.

Either I'm doing something wrong, or it will not install correctly on my pc.

are you unzipping it with 7zip? if not then that is a problem
it also may be you just don't have enough computer or video card to handle rendering everything at truk so you get CTD
list your computer specs

If I am recalling correctly, "everything at Truk" included a few dozen destroyers. The game craps out dealing with that many ships, resulting in the effect noted. Ducimus posted a patch for it, but the link is dead. It did get fixed in later TMO versions.

Is it the number of ships/units, or is it the complexity of the units that cause the problem?

i also have had problems with the 2.5 tmo download like some of the files are curopt

It was the number. I recall seeing a screenshot. It showed dozens of destroyers in the lagoon, it could have been a hundred or more. They were overlapping, and therefore running into each other.
Have you ever seen a ship in port load inside the dock? You sneak into port and find a ship on fire?
Imagine that many times over, how many collisions the game must process.
Edit:
Shortly after arriving in the Truk area my FPS drop to around 18-24 FPS...
I get very curious and can't resist using the exterior view and flying in further to see what may be causing this issue.
I wound up finding something that you would imagine in a Sci-Fi movie or something... there must have been 30-35 ships sunk with their bow or stern still sticking out of the water and they were all nested tightly together. Very strange looking. AND.. I found a couple other groups like this in addition, so there must have been literally well over 100 of them in total. Heck, there may have been more groups yet undiscovered.

I looked, radar going, from first glance, there are around 20 ships. Also some 8 various freighters scattered about.

I built my computer some 8 years ago, and if I remember correctly even when it was "new" (loose term) it did it then.
No matter though, I'll just avoid Truk.

I was just wondering anyway.
But here's another problem.
When it starts lagging, even if you retreat from Truk, the "lag" stays with you.
If you tc greater than 32, it becomes "jerky".
At least that is my experience.

Yeah, I remember that. I'm wondering if a save and load might fix that. Of course, I'd expect that it would result in a broken save file.

I have a graphics card that is over 6 years old. I have played TMO 2.5 with RSRD and gone into Truk. With all the merchants, DD's and other capital ships and roaming patrols inside and outside the lagoon I have yet to see any issue with or crashes.
I do recall once when there was a massive build up of ships inside th lagoon ... must have been 5 convoys and all sorts of capital ships. I created a clean install, clean mods list and never saw the issue again.
Most people who have issues like these stem from switching out mods and never properly bring you back to a clean game while populating your newer mod list.
I always repopulate the mods after I have done a clean install ... 90% that I have seen in the forums can be rectified by a clean install.

Now that you mention it, when I came in to Surabaya, I saw an USN cruiser on fire, with it's bow sticking up at a 30 degree angle, close to shore. I was wondering about that.
I thought that maybe IJN bombers did it, but it was late at night, so most likely not.
