Let's never forget ALL the names.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/84/Raising_the_Flag_outline.svg/624px-Raising_the_Flag_outline.svg.pngHOWEVER:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/92/First_Iwo_Jima_Flag_Raising.jpg/640px-First_Iwo_Jima_Flag_Raising.jpgRaising the First Flag on Iwo Jima by SSgt. Louis R. Lowery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_R._Lowery), USMC, is the most widely circulated photograph of the first flag flown on Mt. Suribachi. The Marines and Navy corpsman in SSgt. Lowery's photograph were photographed after 1Lt. Harold Schrier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_G._Schrier) (3rd platoon commander (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platoon_commander), E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2nd_Battalion_28th_Marines), 5th Marine Division (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5th_Marine_Division_(United_States))), Sgt. Ernest Thomas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Ivy_Thomas,_Jr.) (platoon sergeant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platoon_sergeant)), and Sgt. Henry Hansen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Oliver_Hansen) (platoon guide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platoon_guide)) had raised the first pipe and flag on Mount Suribachi.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raising_the_Flag_on_Iwo_Jima#cite_note-7) Left to right: 1Lt. Harold Schrier (crouched behind radioman's legs), Pfc. Raymond Jacobs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Jacobs) (radioman assigned from F Company), Sgt. Henry "Hank" Hansen (cloth cap, securing flag pipe with left hand), Platoon Sgt. Ernest "Boots" Thomas (seated), Pvt. Phil Ward (helmeted, securing flag pipe with both hands), PhM2c (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hospital_Corpsman)John Bradley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bradley_(Iwo_Jima)), USN (helmeted, securing the flag pipe with right hand, standing above Pvt. Ward), Pfc. James Michels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Michels) (holding Carbine rifle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Carbine)), and Cpl. Charles W. Lindberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_W._Lindberg) (standing above Michels). Neither the iconic Rosenthal photo nor this one were 'staged' PFC Michels is seriously on alert and SGT Hanson's bayonet is 'fixed' ready for whatever...:salute: of additional interest: http://collectinghistory.net/iwojima/ (http://collectinghistory.net/iwojima/) http://collectinghistory.net/iwojima/iwo.jpgOne goes up (for posterity) one comes down...:salute:

The fact that Iwo Jima was still a very hostile area can be confirmed by the fact that several of the flag raisers where later killed or injured.
