SYDNEY (Reuters) - Scientists say they have discovered a black hole so big that it challenges the theory about how they grow.

Scientists said this black hole was formed about 900 million years after the Big Bang.

But with measurements indicating it is 12 billion times the size of the Sun, the black hole challenges a widely accepted hypothesis of growth rates.

From Earh farts to black holes we ARE doomed to die and it's all our fault. BUT! If you send me money it will make you feel better about yourself. :D

Wonder if some of these "conspiracy builders" are going to use this in their "end-of the-world-scenario" ?

Maybe it sucked up other stars or a smaller black hole(s) which added to its mass, which adds to its gravitational pull allowing it to grow to such a size.

Sure it is disturbing, but it is not impossible according to known astrophysical calculations.

This is not exactly "breaking the bank" although it is an awesome discovery nonetheless. It just shows how little we really know, and how much more there is to discover.

Not minimizing another one of mankinds great discoveries, just saying there is much more cooler stuff to come.

Black holes grow, scientific theory suggests, as they absorb mass. However, as mass is absorbed, it will be heated creating radiation pressure, which pushes the mass away from the black hole.
"Basically, you have two forces balanced together which sets up a limit for growth, which is much smaller than what we found," said Bian.

There could be an unknown factor or a limit when the mass gets too high to destroy this balance and loose that radiation.

Or perhaps there was some weird occurance when an entire galaxy collapsed :o

My theory is that this hole formed soon after big bang, a galaxy worth of mass didn't expand properly with the universe and collapsed in itself.
