Hi - I'd really like to play Silent Hunter III, but am unsure whether it would be best to get the Steam version, or a boxed version or possibly a download from another retail outlet? I'm running Windows 8.1 and am based in the UK (if directed to retailers.

I'm prefer a download version if it's still mod-able, as the computer I use for playing games does not have an optical drive, so it's a bit of a faff to install a game from disc,

I would like to run Mods such as GWX Gold and any mods that allow me to play at 1080p or otherwise improve the graphics and gameplay.

If this has all been answered before, then I won't be offended if you just point me at the relevant threads!

I know SH4 has better graphics, but I much prefer the Battle of the Atlantic setting and have heard that SHIII has better game play.

Juist seen your thread. Amazon UK seems to sell a number of different versions of SHIII from different publishers and released in different years, is there a particular one to look out for? Are some better than others (e.g. already patched, no stupid Starforce copy protection)?

e.g. this one (released 2006) is only 68p!: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silent-Hunter-III-PC-DVD/dp/B000FUCGDY/

But this one is £18, but released much later (2010): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silent-Hunter-III-PC-DVD/dp/B0035ER6F0/

I'm guessing the 2010 release would be the better one to get? It's alot for an old game, though, especially as is only £6.99 on Steam...

The Steam version worries me as it doesn't sound fully moddable (can't change .exe etc.)

Would I be able to copy the game files onto another computer (with an optical drive), then copy these to my gaming PC and install that way?

is the version you can buy direct as a download from UBIsoft moddable?:

Yes, that works.

My advice: Get the Amazon-version USING THE SUBSIM-LINK I provided.

But that just seems to link to old second hand versions on the Amazon UK store, or do you mean buy the version on the US Amazon store? Could be expensive with postage to the UK etc.

Would this version of the game be moddable and not have Starforce DRM? It has white bars, not silver on the box:

The Revival version was released in 2010 and is completely patched and StarForce-free. :sunny:
