View Full Version : World of Tanks observations

Well I recently started messeing around with WOT. While a fairly fun game I make several observations.
Things that annoy me:
1) Why in the hell do so many idiots sit there and fire thier guns at nothing? Do that not realize that first this gives away your position and second that uh ammo costs silver or gold and by doing this they are wasting money.
2) Why in the hell are you driving a light tank if you're not going to scout for enemies? Why when I am in a light tank are you simply following me in your
light tank you idiot? This is not combat effective you've just reduced our teams scouting abilities you twit.
3) Why are you not capturing the enemy base (espically in cases where enemy has superior numbers) no brainer you can win the battle and be out numbered 4 to one.
4) Why are you trying to use a SPG like a tank or a tank destroyer its neither you are the only type unit that should generally be stationary. Why don't you answer fire support requests?
5) Why are you using a tank destroyer if your accuracy sucks?
6) Why are you trying to duke it out with a superior tank? Move your pansy butt that's you advantage idiot.
7) Why are you trying to drive up and down sheer cliffs? You are achieving nothing. Except when you are on the opposing team then you should do this so I can kill you.
Try War Thunder, IMHO it is preferable to WoT, more realism, less HP based and with the possibility of tanks and planes working together (with ships in the pipeline). US, German and Soviet sides are already in, Japanese and British to follow.

You are expecting authenticity/realism (and according behavior) from a game's community that consists mostly of teens who play Call of Duty on their peasant box...
You're wasting your time... :D
Yeah, I think asking "why" in all this is pretty futile. These are not the sorts of players who think through their decisions.
The frustrating thing, though, is that it quickly becomes a game of exploiting very game-y mechanics and balance flaws that bear no resemblance to reality whatsoever.

:D I know that was just my rant not like any of it will be cured. Yes will have to try War Thunder. Too bad as WOT has or had potential but it got lost.
Always a disadvantage of MP games there always will be to some extent idiots.

After a year and a half I quitted WoT for a lot of reasons. The basics of the game are great, but there are so many wrongs... Player base is only one of them.

I'll have to agree about War Thunder. Not the epitome of realism but very much better than World of Tanks.

Well realism is not a concern nothing can really simulate the hell of WWII tank combat if it did no one would want to play. What my great uncle told me about opening the hatch on a seemingly undamaged M4 in Belgium was enough to convince me.
Anyway I want something fun but with less irritation than WOT.
As to War Thunder what's its system? As one thing I find kind of mehh about WOT is how you are more or less forced to pay at certain points unless you want to griiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii pause to catch breath iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid.
I also find that having to pay gold for certain ammo types is pretty bogus. I think everything except certain premium items should cost silver not gold just place a high silver price, of course they do this to get more money from the mommy daddy crowd.
I prefer a free to play that stands well on its own and has a strong in game currency so that maybe once a month you want to spend a little real cash on it.

AFAIK there's no premium ammo in WT, although there is still grinding, alas, but I think it's a bit more accessible than WoT. Also, the damage model is much better, you even get to see what your shells have penetrated and where, and when you are shot out, the same in reverse:

Well, it's more realistic than World of Tanks. In any case I also find it a lot more fun. I almost couldn't stand World of Tanks at all.
As for grinding, the system is rather similar to World of Tanks. World of Tanks is worse in my experience but I haven't played it in ages and I haven't grinded to the end of the tree in War Thunder, so I can't say for sure. In any case, there's no premium ammo to my knowledge and while there are premium planes and tanks and such I don't think they're so massively unbalanced that the normal stuff isn't competitive.

Sounds more my speed I love seeing where my shots hit in APOPS(Operation Star) and in the TOW titles. Grinding is not so bad depending on the process of it which in WOT is a bit excessive seems set up to force you either to tire of it and quit or buy a premium tank just so you can exchange the xp and of course the extra silver that you net.

Haven't played WoT in a year or so but I have to admit I love WoT Blitz, the mobile version. Perfect for the toilet break and when the wife picks a boring movie on movie night. :yeah:

1) Why in the hell do so many idiots sit there and fire thier guns at nothing? Do that not realize that first this gives away your position and second that uh ammo costs silver or gold and by doing this they are wasting money.
Except for very, very new players who don't know how to reload their cannon, I have no real idea why people do this. I mean, if you have good reason to think there's a baddie there you can't see that's one thing, but if not I don't get it.
2) Why in the hell are you driving a light tank if you're not going to scout for enemies? Why when I am in a light tank are you simply following me in your light tank you idiot? This is not combat effective you've just reduced our teams scouting abilities you twit.
I'm going to assume you're talking about light tanks in the 'actual scout tanks' sense. There are some people who don't seem to realize that not every light is meant for or suited to recon, but I doubt you're one of them.
That said, there are some occasions when a light tank can make crucial contributions without simply scouting (if there's three SPGs on the other team, I really hope the guy in the Luchs forgoes scouting and goes arty hunting) or maps where it's more effective to passive scout (ie: sit still in cover).
I've lost count of the number of times I've lost concealment because some idiot drove up next to my M3 and started firing at something in the distance.
Also, occasionally you get a match tiered in such a way where something like a Luchs or a Chaffee is potentially the biggest direct threat on the map. Don't expect them to scout when they're your teams most efficient killer.
3) Why are you not capturing the enemy base (espically in cases where enemy has superior numbers) no brainer you can win the battle and be out numbered 4 to one.
Usually I hate this too. But sometimes people are shouting about 'cap their base!' when they don't seem to realize that capping the base involves sitting there vulnerable to incoming fire and that the area around the base needs to be clean of SPGs, sniping TDs, etc, before capping will work.
4) Why are you trying to use a SPG like a tank or a tank destroyer its neither you are the only type unit that should generally be stationary. Why don't you answer fire support requests?
I don't SPG much, but the times I have, some people desperately make fire support requests against targets my particular gun cannot hit.
And sometimes you move because you think you've been spotted and sitting there is a great way to lose an artillery duel. On the other hand, using one as a clumsy TD is usually a bad idea, except with a couple of vehicles.
On the other hand, I got a Top Gun in a T-57 once and the last two guys I got outside of arty view. One I rammed.;)
5) Why are you using a tank destroyer if your accuracy sucks?
Depends on the TD. If we're talking about an AT2 it's because they like to drive a ridiculously slow armored monolith around hearing small caliber rounds bounce off their hull.
6) Why are you trying to duke it out with a superior tank? Move your pansy butt that's you advantage idiot.
Target fixation.;)
7) Why are you trying to drive up and down sheer cliffs?
Cuz cocaine is a hell of a drug.

@Steelhead, what server are you playing on? I'm on the west server. I was thinking about doing a thread similar to yours.
For the most part, I really enjoy the game, but it does have it's short comings.
1. I detest the SPGs for various reasons. (I live to kill these things though:D)
2. Some of the tank/gun combinations are just silly.
3. I hate some of the match mismatches, especially with the upper tier tanks.
4. I wish the matches were historically based. All German vs all Russian or US, etc.
5. Some of the things they charge gold for is frustrating (like camo paint jobs:down:)

1. I detest the SPGs for various reasons. (I live to kill these things though:D)
Artillery play can be rewarding if you're more patient than I am. The long reload times, the overall slowness of most of the SPGs (which can't always shoot across the whole map, ya' know), the teenaged fury of people whining about supporting fire when the baddie they're worried about is tucked up someplace indirect rounds can't go...
...yeah. Fun fun. I can hate arty and still have great respect for the people who stick with it long enough to be good at it.
3. I hate some of the match mismatches, especially with the upper tier tanks.I don't understand the need for the three-tier spread of tanks. Some tanks, especially heavies, are nearly impervious to anything two tiers below. A two-tier spread would seem more logical.
4. I wish the matches were historically based. All German vs all Russian or US, etc. They actually did try this. Everyone hated it.:)
One thing War Thunder has got going for it is, if this kind of thing bothers you, on 'realistic' levels and above, you get essentially this. Not on arcade mode, though.
5. Some of the things they charge gold for is frustrating (like camo paint jobs:down:)I'd rather them charge real money for something cosmetic than for something that had more of an in-game impact.
That said I'm a camo whore and hate taking my rides out unpainted. Spent a lot of silver on 7-day paint jobs...
WT still has the odd derp player, I witnessed a StuG throw itself off a wall yesterday, the driver soon discovered that he was on the tank battles server, not the aircraft one.
Then there's this guy, I think he underestimated the center of gravity of the Ug-Lee:

War Thunder IS a game where enough people turn their tank over that they added tow ropes, so...yeah...
I actually don't really like WT's tank side too much. I don't know if I just prefer WoT for armor for some reason or just can't resist airplanes when they're available

I can understand that, I tend to do a bit better with my RAF aircraft than I do with my German or Soviet tanks. Looking forward to when the British tanks get introduced though, at least the British tank I want probably won't be much higher than Tier II or III (Matilda II) rather than the American (Sherman 76), Soviet (T-34/85) or German (Panther).

That game got me over an old, old dislike for the Spitfire that had rested in my brain for many years. Now I drool over the climb rate and the Mk IX is one of my favorite planes in the game, especially with the recent addition of the air targets belt for the 20mm's.
I mostly fly American since I really prefer to boom and zoom, but found that the Spit was way better than that on War Thunder than it had been on some of my older games. Working on the first Griffon Spit right now.
Waiting with impatience for the Sea Fury, though.

To be fair, I'm not really sure that thing has a center of gravity...
As far as aircraft go, I got to the P-39 with the Americans, which is the one I wanted, though I still need to get the fancier versions and the P-63. I have a long way to go until I could get the Panther with the Germans or the British tanks come out so I can get the Matilda II (which had better have the proper amount of utter invincibility), so it'll be a while before I get the tanks I'm interested in.

I've always been a turn and burn fighter myself, although I'm gaining a new respect for Boom and Zoom. It works quite well in arcade battles because so few people actually bother to climb so you can get the bounce on them quite nicely.

World of Tanks is an exercise in frustration if you take it anything past the, "I'll play it for laughs," level of interest in my opinion.
I like the game, mind you, and have clocked in time continuously since 2012/2013 but it does wear on you IF you let it. Game mechanics aside, the player base can be quite toxic which is one of the reasons why I stop playing WoT from time to time - I don't even bother with looking at their forums anymore.
I, frankly, am turning more towards War Thunder for my overall online sim-esque action as they seem to get it "right," for me in terms of light, arcade action combined with a more traditional sim approach toward vehicle damage modeling. The recent realistic and simulator ground battles with limited or no overhead friend/foe markers, only allowing specific tanks per "side," keeping nationalities grouped together (i.e. Germans over there, Soviet & U.S. over there...now fight!) really has made me more of a fan of the WT offerings.

I usually play on the North America server though I hear plenty of pre-pubesiant English and Irish kids on there sounds like Rod Stewart or David Bowie after getting kicked in the bollocks the sound of whiny teens just put my spine out of place(in bollocked David Bowie voice)
Yes I hate paying for paint too they should have a much wider selection if it cist you real money to have a permanent pattern. Agree on the match ups as well and some tanks when they are fresh simply lack the gun power to survive in their teir.
It can be a fun game I'd just say its more of a blow things up for fun game. Which suits its apparent primary audience well. For example I observed a player with the glorious name "monkey poo" the other day. That let me know that mid to late 30's players such as myself are probably rare. I'm probably the old fart.

I play computer games because I don't want to associate with people. If I wanted to interact with people I would play tabletop games. :D
