View Full Version : Obs. scope

Hi,

I would like to set the Obs. scope to the same hight as the att. scope, I know this isn't realistic but seeing the game cheats in so many ways I'm allowed one or two 'cheats' myself :88)

Anyhow, could someone tell me in what file and where to find those settings.

Thanks,

HJ

not sure but I think it sits about 1m higher then the attack periscope so lower your depth 1m when using it and it will be at the depth you want

it can be done but im not sure where the file is (been a loooong time since I modded) but if you lower it too much it can show sticking out the bottom of the sub because it is hidden by the sub but is made as one solid rod as far as the game is concerned so it doesn't simulate it retracting or extending, it only goes up or down

Thats just it, it isn't... I need to set depth at 52ft instead of periscope depth to be able to see anything through it otherwise the water keeps blurring up my view.

If you or anyone else remembers where to look for it would be much appreciated.

Is that in a situation where the attack scope works fine? Because sometimes the seas are just rough like that.

Nope, calm seas. It simply doesn't go as high as the att. scope

is it just one boat or all the subs and what mods are you using?

have you tried with the stock game or clearing out your mods list, delete the "MODS" folder then run jsgme to create a new one and reload your mods?

just thinking it might be a file corruption

first, make damn sure its not a file or game corruption thing, then (and im just guessing here) look for it in the sim file for that boat and it will be the x/y axis thing to adjust which is the position markers for left or right or up or down

I used to play with this mod setup before and rarely get a new sub, never make it that far (to aggressive:arrgh!:) and because I gotten used to not using the Obs. scope I didn't bother checking it on the Tambor.
But now I would like to start using it.

Mod list is:
TMO
IJN Radar Fix for TMO2 Beta
LST TMO v2
OTC > TMO
OTC 8:5 TMO
ISE v3
Better Sand
TMO Smoke Mod
TDW DC water Dist.
TDW Ship plane Fire damage
Compass Mod
NMMO v2.1
NMMO addon
NMMO Patch with AB
Bigger Better Protractor
Webster Missing Voices

No I haven't, this is a fresh install of the game. It wouldn't hurt to check out stock tho. Will do that after I finish this patrol.
I'll also re-install the mods one by one and test them via single missions.

:hmmm: Haven't seen that anyware in the .sim file, won't touch it yet either.

I found this while searching SubSim:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=203484

Apparently it's supposed to be lower than the attack scope :06:, anyway I'll first check to see if its a Mod corruption or not. If not I'll still want to get the darn thing up by 4ft.

The game doesnt cheat ... it just wasnt written with 100% realism, some mods try to do their best to correct that.

Apparently it's supposed to be lower than the attack scope :06:,

This was so the both scopes would have a unobstructed view to the front. (Meaning both could be used at the same time.)

There is nothing magical about periscope depth. When there are significant waves, set a shallower depth. It's no big deal; I do this all the time. Often, subs went 10 ft. or more above PD, so they could do a 'high-periscope' search. When they were close to unfriendly eyes, they went deeper again.

But, if it bothers you that much, you can alter the periscope depth in your sub's *.cfg file.

Point taken

some mods try to do their best to correct that.

And I very much appreciate the work and effort modders put in to making them.

I've read that aswell but as I am the only one pushing the buttons behind my computer I don't think it will be an problem. :88)

:wah: I just want to raise the scope

There are a couple of ways of getting what you want. All with a few short comings. I'll give you the one I think will provide the least of them.

You'll need to use Silent 3Ditor to change the periscope depth for the particular sub you're using. Go to the Data/Submarine/xxx.whateverSub folder....then open the xxx.sim file with S3D. As in the below image, find the Submerged/Draught= parameter, change it to say 6.8 meters:

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w132/crawlee/SubDepth_zps6678njr8.jpg

I've got the Gato.sim file opened.....might as well change it too. Don't forget to "Save" your changes. While you're at it, change the Salmon and Tambor as well. I know the Salmon is at 7 something.....I didn't bother to look at the Tambor. The S-Class and Porpoise are OK, both are sitting higher than 7 meters in depth.

What this will do is set your periscope depth to a higher position in-water, giving you the opportunity to keep both scopes above water, even in slightly rougher seas. Setting this parameter at 6.8 meters deep will be good for the Balao, Gato, Salmon, Tambor, Gar (I'd have to look, I think the Gar uses the Gato model? I forget ).

You could raise up the specific Observation scope 3D model in the Data/Interiors/SubName_CT.dat file. But, doing so, you may not like what you'll find with the Observation scope not retracting into the Conning Tower floor as expected. So I think just raising the entire sub higher when at Periscope Depth will work better.

Thank you CapnScurvy and everyone else of course.

Now that I know where to look I'll check it out, and if I don't like the result I'll raise the sub 1m.
I'm hardly ever in the control room to notice anyway

What's the difference between the two scopes? I haven't found any, myself.

Depends on whether it's stock or a mod. The main difference is the Observation scope has a greater range of motion. Meaning, it can look almost straight up.....although not quite. The upward movement is greater than the Attack scope. Both have the same magnification, and Field of View (FoV). Some mods change the lens brightness, to have the Observation scope appear brighter during night operations. If a mod enabled it, the SST (Radar Transmitter) is housed in the Observation scope. It becomes available later in the war. The idea is for a sub to raise the Obs scope while at periscope depth and have the radar screen show what's out there. It's been a while since I looked at it but the game doesn't really have this capability. The Dev's never got around to implementing this feature, although it's modeled. So are Radar Covers for the Radar sets. They were to be used over the units between the start time of the game Dec. 1941 and mid 1942 when most Radar units become available for upgrades. They were never properly implemented either.

Historically, the Observation scope was used to look for planes before surfacing. It was also considered a backup if something went wrong with the Attack scope. Although its not rendered in-game, periscopes were known to fog on occasions, leak too. A sub having a second eye to the world is just as important as it is to us.
