Forgive me if not the right forum, but I don't see one for "general discussion about the SH series". Figured this was the best one, as it's for the most recent version.

So I occasionally see chatter about whether there will be a SH6. I don't know if this would be better served as a mod to any/all of the existing SH games, but has there ever been any thought to having a version of SH where the war's progress and outcome is not already known and depends in large part to how successful you are in your sub missions?

This was the way the old Red Storm Rising game was designed, as if you did not successfully complete a mission, the Eastern bloc countries began to gain ground on NATO (and could eventually force NATO to surrender), but the more you succeeded, the more the NATO powers advanced until (theoretically) they forced the Eastern bloc to retreat to their status quo borders and give up.

Anyway, thought it would be nice to see something like that with SH. You tried to sink a major Japanese convoy and failed? Maybe now the Japs are conducting an amphibious assault on Australia as a result. Didn't take out that British task force? The German invasion of Britain being planned as a result of your previous successes just met with disaster....

Any thoughts??

Because the luftwaffe didn't defeat the RAF. U-boats would have been usefull to protect an invasion if it would have happend.

Yes, it has been discussed before (it might seem odd if almost twenty years after the first SH and ten years after SHIII no one had ever thought of it). There are people who want something like that. I would just like to have a realistic sub sim that wasn't broken. I played LucasArts' Their Finest Hour back in the day, and thought the idea that I could single-handedly win the Battle of Britain for Germany to be more than a little silly.

A single submarine destroy an entire task force? Not likely. Destroy the main ship? It happened more than once, and didn't change anything.

Supposedly SH5 is smart enough that if you are successful the Allies will beef up defenses in that area. That's a good idea, but beyond that I don't know what's best, only what I like.
