(DESTROYED)
You have arrived. After a journey from the Mountainhomes into the forbidding wilderness beyond, your harsh trek has finally ended. Your party of seven is to make an outpost for the glory of all of Gitnukzasit (The Mint Knives).
There are almost no supplies left, but with stout labor comes sustenance. Whether by bolt, plow or hook, provide for your dwarves. You are expecting a supply caravan just before winter entombs you, but it is Spring now. Enough time to delve secure lodgings. Here the wolves get hungry. A new chapter of dwarven history begins here at this place, Monomemet, *Paperfresh*.

Dear dwarves of *Paperfresh*
I know I did not pick the most suitable place to embark, but with great risk comes great reward, right?
I would have, however, appreciated if you could have shown some initiative and gathered supplies on your own without me having to write a list for you.
I totally understand you, mining is the shizzle, but you can't live off of mining, so why you only brought one single pick?
You've really made this a Single Pick Challenge!
Sincerely,

The cold and snowy surface is no place for Dwarves, so I have Drewcifer start digging a cozy hole to call home. :yeah:
http://i.imgur.com/GGxIzWT.jpg
And Drewcifer, please work with utmost haste, we are not alone.
http://i.imgur.com/xFoCxOO.jpg
I deconstruct the wagon and stash the precious 3 pieces of wood downstairs.
http://i.imgur.com/bG65ObE.jpg
Good timing! Just as I get everyone inside and wall off the entrance, it starts to rain something bad.
http://i.imgur.com/YNjxMVK.jpg
The Yeti however is not so lucky on the surface. That's some nasty rain.
http://i.imgur.com/sFMalZf.jpg
Damn, that didn't take long. Everyone is now thirsty. Drewcifer, start digging downwards, hopefully we hit a cavern!

StoneSense view of the glorious fortress on the 2nd month of year 64.
The fortress faces two big problems that need to be solved as quickly as possible.
1. Drink, with any luck the first cavern is not too deep and we can get water and eventually booze before the dwarves die of thirst.
2. The two Yaks are going to die of hunger & thirst eventually. I need to figure out a way to butcher them and dump the parts that will be reanimated someplace out of the way.
13th day of the second month, year 64
If my calculations are correct, it takes dwarf 9 weeks to die of thirst.
It has been nearly 4 weeks since our supplies ran out.
With 5 weeks left, we start digging towards the caverns that are hopefully not too deep.
1st day of the third month, year 64
Our miner has tirelessly mined for the past 2 weeks and reports he is now at level 63.
Dwarves are beginning to show signs of dehydration. How far down can this cavern be?
11th day of the third month, year 64
Finally! That excited scream from down below can only mean one thing: Drewcifer McMiner has breached into the caverns!
Water! Mushroom trees! Food!
WE ARE SAVED!
15th day of the third month, year 64
WHY?! Why are you stubby legged idiots not drinking the water?! It's not booze, I know! BUT YOU ARE DYING OF THIRST FOR ARMOK'S SAKE!
Is it the Giant Olm that lives down there? Because that thing is not even close to the water!

Water? Nah, we good here. Not thirsty at all.

I dont know how I did it, and frankly I dont care, but the dwarves finally dragged their behinds into the cavern and quenched their thirst. Hooray!
http://i.imgur.com/SVAJJq9.jpg
Next, I guess I'll have to provide them something to eat.
Time to build a butcher's shop and a small pit where the unneeded, come-back-to-life-and-eat-you parts of the Yaks will be thrown in.
http://i.imgur.com/KML5lFF.jpg
Next to the butcher's shop is the kitchen with Oberon McCook working his magic. :)
8th day of the fifth month, year 64
I have to get all able bodied dwarves into the caverns to gather plants and cut down trees, so I can get my non-existent industry running before the first trade caravan gets here.
The pitted body parts have not come back to life and after studying my dusty scrolls,
it would seem some terrifying areas lack the feature of bringing the dead back to life.
Disappointing.
Well, it looks like we are going to survive through the first year.
We don't have much in way of drink and food, but enough to keep these seven alive.
Looking goo-

Don't drink his coffee...
Right. I've save scummed and tried to figure this out for about 3-4 hours total
and I just don't see any problems other than a possible game related bug.
Here's the problem: Nobody will go down past the first entrance area I dug and
the expedition leader down in the cavern refuses to come up.
There are no burrows, no route restrictions, the relevant dwarves have the needed professions and so on.
If I tell someone to dig at the entrance level, they'll do it, but if I tell somebody
to dig at one level below that, they won't do it. They won't even go pick up
the marked-for-dumping ice blocks that are below the entrance level.
The strange thing is, everyone went down to have a drink and came back up
earlier and absolutely nothing have changed since that.
My money's on the 4-5 thick ice layer, as there is a somewhat unrelated bug already with ice,
so it could be there is another bug that somehow messes up the pathfinding.
...which makes no sense, because I don't get any "Can't find path" cancellation messages. :hmmm:
I'll give it one more shot before abandoning the fort and starting a new one.
EDIT: Yup, something's definitely messed up with that save. Consider *Paperfresh* abandoned.

22nd day of the fifth month, year 64
Hooray! We made it, lads! And look, there are trees on the surface and a delightful lack of ice! There's water too!
This is so going to be the bestest Fortress in the history of bestestest fortresses!
Guys?
Why are you running?
http://i.imgur.com/RMicehO.jpg
Oh.. yeah.. let's get inside.
15th day of the sixth month, year 64
We managed to gather quite a stockpile of wood while Drewcifer was digging us a safe spot.
Butcher's workshop and kitchen were also built, and naturally the pit to throw all the unwelcome remains in.
Lionclaw made us couple of beds too, how thoughtful.

2nd day of the seventh month, year 64
Drewcifer has been digging continuosly, but the cavern continues to elude us.
Some more workshops have been built, namely Mason's and Craftdwarf's. Have to start preparing for the arrival of the first caravan.
But first things first. The dwarves are thirsty!
It's not booze, but there are some murky pools outside... better than nothing, right?
Let me just unlock the front door and let the dwarves out, what could possibly go wrong?

2nd day of the seventh month, year 64
Led by Sibrek, the dwarves hastily form a militia group and surround the undead skunk.
Blows are exchanged and sooner than I expected, the skunk lies.. err.. deader?
At quick glance, I note that none of my dwarves are seriously injured. Excellent.
http://i.imgur.com/gS6dOfL.jpg
I suggest to my dwarves that it would be wise to throw the corpse in the pit.
They decide to go have a drink instead. Priorities!
(They did eventually throw the thing in there, so that's good)
6th day of the seventh month, year 64
The caravan should be arriving shortly, but we are lacking a trade depot.
Let's remedy that by building one!
Also, rock mugs are being chiseled out by Oberon. It wont be much, but atleast we've got something to sell.

9th day of the seventh month, year 64
I wasnt expecting the caravan to come so soon, but here they are.
The output liason brings some exciting news:
"The latest news from Voicescarred the Yell of Prophets is that a week ago a group calling itself
The Hoary Fortress reclaimed the site on behalf of The Turquoise Standard.
A week ago Oberon Pagedbolted became expedition leader of The Hoary Fortress."
10th day of the eighth month, year 64
Caravan leaves, I ask them to bring everything next year.
Lionclaw got a good deal, exchanging our mugs to some plump helmets for brewing and growing.
http://i.imgur.com/9rP9PvW.jpg
At this point, I remembered that Plump Helmets are set for both cooking and brewing by default.
So, the 10 Plump Helmets I bought? Made to biscuits by Raptor1...

For fun, I am doing a 3D layout of the fortress as I build it, so here is what it looks like now:

26th of the eighth month, year 64
I'm not very good at checking my surroundings before letting my dwarves go out to drink.
A Barn Owl, the undead kind, swoops down from the sky and attacks one of the new arrivals.
The dwarves of Shieldside emerge victorious, but not without casualties.
Id Skinnyblockades has his head torn open, fractured skull and broken right ankle. In other words: As good as dead.
Lionclaw II has two broken ribs and a bruised right lung. With some luck, he'll make it.
14th of the ninth month, year 64
Dear Id Skinnyblockades,
I understand you have a broken ankle, but could you please crawl one tile in ANY direction.
I'd like to close that door you are wedged in.

16th of the ninth month, year 64
Id Skinnyblockades refuses to move. Unconsciousness might play a part in that.
I assign one of the beds for hospital use and have his butt dragged there to die.
(How long is he going to live, anyway?!)
Weather is getting colder, the ponds have frozen outside.
Really could use that cavern!
25th of the ninth month, year 64
We reached the cavern!
And we found adamantine!

Hopefully you ordered a bunch of picks with the next caravan so that everyone can mine the sweet sweet shiny goodness. They say it can drive a dwarf to madness, but its so shiny and wonderful! <foams at the mouth a little, with a glazed look>
Of course you know what this means... <CENSORED> <REDACTED> <OH COME ON STOP SWEARING ALREADY!> Nobles... Might be wise to get together a lava heated bedroom or two for their lords and ladyships :D
I think I'll hold off on getting the shinies for now. It's my first time ever seeing the stuff, but I've heard the horror stories. :O:

So.. as the majesticly amazing piece of art above shows, there was a bit of a zombie problem in Shieldside.
I say was, because... well... everyone's kiiinda dead now.
What happened was, Id Skinnyblockades died couple of weeks after the last post.
I threw his corpse in the pit, but I failed to realize something new about DF2014:
Things can climb.
Id's corpse went all 'Spider-Undead-Dwarf", climbed up from the pit and massacred everyone.
That's really all there is to say about it. My silly mistake cost the fortress,
which I might say was the best I've had ever in DF. I even found magma in the first cavern!
Funny fact: Most of the migrants, including Id Skinnyblockades, were from the first fortress; Paperfresh.
*Shieldside* = DESTROYED
PS. Suggestions of what to do next?
PPS. Also, if you want a named dwarf, let me know.

Hmm, that is odd. Zombification doesn't add a climber tag that I or anyone else seems aware of, so unless your dorf was an amazing climber in life it was either a bug, or a problem with your pit design. The pit was the little 5z level tube to the far right in your 3d image right? A trick to make something unclimbable, baring a bug, is to create an overhang, like a 3x3 shaft with a 1x1 opening in the center at the top. Also did you wall off the other entrances (i see 3 connections to that tube).
As for suggestions, how bout the savage jungle next (maybe not terrifying) :)
I have no idea what happened, Id climbing up the pit is my best guess.
I have the whole two posts' lenght recorded on video, so I double check.
I'm sure he was thrown in the pit. :hmmm:
EDIT: Yes, every entrance to the pit was walled off. The pit was normal wall, not smoothed, so I think that allowed the corpse to climb back up. :hmmm:
Hmmm.... :hmmm: Perhaps launch an assault on Shieldside, try to take it back, and if that fails then start afresh.
Yeah, assaulting Shieldside is something I'd love to do. Such a great embark that was.
Neonsamurai's suggestion is tempting as well, as there are no elves down south, so I can't abuse their caravans. :O:
At any rate, I take a break, week or two before I start another one.
Feel free to discuss what the next fortress should be here. :yep:

Trying to recapture could be 'fun' too. Though it would probably be difficult as all the dead dwarves will probably have risen. Make sure to bring lots of blunt weapons (or edge weapons if you want to watch everyone to get brutally murdered by animated body parts), and to butcher the zombies after.
As for the pit, natural unsmoothed walls are the easiest to climb out of, and smoothed natural stone is virtually impossible to climb, so maybe your zombie had some climbing skill before death. Climbing ceilings though is impossible. So a bottle shape works to keep them down there (just make sure the container part is at least 2 z-levels deep

Hola!
I'm preparing to start another "season" of fortresses. Sadly I don't think there are any savage jungles as Neonsamurai suggested in the new world I generated, but I got a couple of ideas.
Anyways, here's the map of the new world, Zilirkar, on which I have marked all the known Dwarven civilizations circa 113.
(click for fullsize 2150x2300)
http://i.imgur.com/ln4fOPr.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/YteNsIS.jpg)
Starting as soon as I figure out what to do. Couple ideas I have:
- Story (Diary entry kinda stuff, set goal(The Dangerous Knife King got a pretty good story I could try to flesh out to be my goal))
- Normal fort in normal AAR style, from my perspective (i.e. playing a game and writing about it)
- special challenge (Hermit perhaps (one dwarf tries to live as long as he/she can))
- Battle Royale (5 dwarves from the embark make invidual forts in the corners and center of the map, who lives wins. They would also fight each other. Lots of dice rolling involved. Maybe even interaction with all the named dwarves (you guys)? You roll the dice, I make it happen. Sounds complicated though...)
Any suggestions, let me know.
PS. Forgot to mention that I used the eat/kill sentient = acceptable when making this world, which means I can butcher goblins and elves. I can also make the road leading to my trade depot be lined with elven bone totems.
HIPPIES!!! :stare:
