No bones about it - Britain in uproar over Dippy dinosaur move
One of Britain's most-loved museum exhibits, the skeleton-cast of Dippy the Diplodocus dinosaur at the Natural History Museum in London, is to be replaced, much to the distress of its many fans.
The museum announced on Thursday that Dippy, who has graced its cathedral-like central hall for 35 years, will make way for the bones of a blue whale that has been hanging in a different hall since 1938.

Cannot the blue whale be suspended from the ceiling as are many of the larger as at he Ottowa museum for example. You'd be amazed what your two cents to a curator online will accomplish. All museums operate on profit and donations; and sometimes the tunnel-vi$ion is mi$guided. The site in question appears large enough heightwise to hang the one up high and so enjoy the both. I don't see why not but as the building is Victorian there may be some red tape. :hmmm:

But i agree: what's a Blue whale, that hangs around in every Museum, against a Diplodocus :hmph:

I was lucky to see it in 2007.
And it took me an entire afternoon to dash through less than half the Museum. I'm looking forward to complete the visit, and not just the NHM ;)
Even the Russians are angry, they sent a couple of Bears down to the English Channel to express their displeasure.

Either that or it could 'bring the house down'.
Are they thinking about moving this one? :hmmm:

SAVE DIPPY OR KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE NHM
Honestly, I'm not against it, a blue whale is a remarkable creature and still alive today, unlike Dippy, and it's not as if Dippy has been at the front since the museums creation, it's only been a little over thirty years.
Plus, Dippy is going on a national tour which will hopefully bring more traffic to the museum which contains a myraid of other dinosaur skeletons and artifacts. So while it'll be a shame not to see Dippy in the front lobby the next time I go there, it's not the end of the world...that already happened for Dippy. :03:

That's a good way to think about it. It is not like they are throwing "Dippy" in the trash. Museums change their displays all the time. It is one good way to get repeat visitors.
Indeed, and I'm sure that when the tour is over Dippy will return, if not to the front entrance then certainly to the dino exhibit. In the meantime, we'll have our pictures and memories of Dippy, and in this case, a random Hodor:
