I think I may have posted this before, a long time ago, but I think in light of recent discussion it probably wouldn't hurt to post it again, I think most of us know where we stand on politics, but it would be interesting to get a comparison across the board.

As for me, no real surprises I lean to the left, and more towards libertarian than authority:

Some of the questions I found hard to pick answers for without an explanation on my part. Still I'm about where I thought I'd be. A little left of center and well away from authoritarian.

I agree that many questions are very much US-centered, especially regarding sex, abortion or religion.
However some are plain stupid, e.g. what is considered art. Others are badly worded, which I mean in regards to the one about if every criminal can be rehibilitated. The answer to this is a clear no, when considering things like mental illnesses; when considering a person's character, the answer is subjective again.

I was curious less about my results (I already knew them from before and have looked way deeper than this into figuring out where I stand), and more about how these changed about me over the last 9 years, since graduating from college and having more "real life" thrown at me and whatnot. There's always this thought that people become more conservative as they age.

http://i.imgur.com/ZtCvKNa.jpg

Nope :D

Apparently all that's happened to me over the last few years is that I've fallen about half the way down the libertarian spectrum :hmmm:

And ditto on Penguin's comment - in general, this is a very US-centric measurement. There is one serious problem with this, because relative to much of the rest of the world (at least Western world), mainstream US politics are shifted way to the right. The mainstream Conservative parties in most places, from Europe to Canada and Australia to South America, would be at best in the center of this spectrum (or slightly left), at least with the questions asked the way they are.

As for my own shift towards supposed libetarian socialism, I'd mostly explain it by way of my experience with politics in Canada, where more than anything I've become disillusioned with the lack of credibility on the left, where the party platforms are either short-sighted and poorly-managed (i.e. NDP) or just ideologically impaired of any good judgment (i.e. Green and all the non-represented parties on the left).

I think a lot of the results stem from the way the test is structured and the nature of the questions.

For example:
I'd always support my country, whether it was right or wrong.
Who says Strongly Agree with that? Probably no one. But since the other choices are Strongly Disagree, Disagree, and Agree, who puts Strongly Disagree? For me, I support my country until the level of "wrong" hits a certain line, so I marked down Disagree.

"from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" is a fundamentally good idea. Seriously? That's mental, have to Strongly Disagree.

It's a sad reflection on our society that something as basic as drinking water is now a bottled, branded consumer product. Agree, but again, I'm old school, I see buying drinking water as foolish in most situations.

It is regrettable that many personal fortunes are made by people who simply manipulate money and contribute nothing to their society. Agree. Regrettable, but not illegal. It's just as regrettable that people like Justin Beaver make millions of dollars doing whatever they do.

And here we might even hit another obstacle and that's how we interpret the questions. I read this one as if someone has a lot of money he can be taxed higher than someone with little money and I agree. Bill Gates can pay a few % more and still be stinking rich. To me it didn't mean to take everything away from them and make them poor too. On the other hand I support to give help to people in need. Those who can't work because of medical conditions for example or those who have lost everything in a disaster (Katrina anyone?). So I checked "I agree" with that question.

Did you interpret the question as I did or did you see it in a different light?

Onkel Neal
01-29-15, 04:19 PM
Yeah, I guess I saw that question and instantly thought of Dr. Zhivago. That question is parroting Marxist doggerel, and I won't go along with it. The way you interpreted the question, you put it nicely, and I would be inclined to agree, in those terms.

em2nought

I pictured the guys I loaned money to so they could buy a travel trailer to live in. They were sitting back watching the satellite TV they recently installed and smoking reefer. In the meantime I'm out working several jobs, and they have yet to pay me back a single dime of their own free will. Live and learn! :nope:

This is what I had expected and what explains some of the difference in European and American results. It's how we interpret the questions.

The question is were they really in need or did they just fool you. I'm not for supporting people who don't want to work and I don't think the question in the poll was meant to take away from the working to give to the lazy but to give to people in need. it's all about interpretation.

They were in need because they spend everything the gov't gives them and then some(just like most people in need). My mistake was to put myself in their place and figure what I was doing for them would let them get ahead and they would be appreciative. Make improvements to the trailer, get a license, get a car, but nope buy reefer, buy satellite, buy steaks(I'm guessing on that one). ...and never even say thank you. LMAO
