Allo Matrose,

How come the downloads don't clearly indicate which SH version they are for? I find it rather frustrating when I'm searching for downloads and many come up but I have no idea of knowing whether it's for SH III, IV or V. I appreciate that some downloads may work in more than one version but why can't each download clearly state this...without having to click on it and even then be none the wiser? I know I can look within SH III downloads but that means scrolling through to see what's available. But if I do an actual 'search', I'm not convinced that the downloads that are filtered are necessarily for SH III...which is the version that I still play after many years of submarining (the best!)

Thanks in advance for any help Kaleuns!

John

Hi John

The current system appears to be working fine for most everyone else but if you have any ideas for further improvements I'd suggest you PM the site owner Neal Stevens.

Hi John

Never really had this problem you refer to.

The 'Downloads' tab showing 'Most Popular Files' I agree does not tell you which SH version it is for, and I wonder if it was this that you were referring to.

You also have the specific Game version tabs there as well where again you will find most of the mods for each game.

hi johnny, yes, there is a bit of slop in the system. Part of that is just because we have so many varoius people making mods and we never developed a really tight categorical system, where the mod has tags to ensure easier searching. I am working on an update, but it is a real time sink thus far.:shucks:

Same here. I never really refer to the Most Popular Files thing, more of going straight to various SH3, 4 or 5 Sections.
The other thing that is useful with mods is the Stickies in each Forum.

Though I know it can be challenging to keep them updated here at SUBSIM.

Hi RDP

If you have seen something on a post somewhere I often find Googling is an easy way to find it.

You pretty much answered me Neal - the search system isn't watertight...not ideal on a submarine, but hey ho!

I suppose I could have made my question clearer: IF I am currently looking in the SH3 section of downloads and I conduct a keyword 'search' for a download there, will the search ONLY look in the SH3 section, i.e. so that I KNOW for sure that any filtered downloads are SH3 compatible? If not, this is quite simply, IMHO, all that needs to be modified in the coding of the search routine...to only search within the 'bulkheads' of the current location.

Please understand Neal: I am just trying to offer a constructive suggestion here...not criticizing. I LOVE this site and I have realized, only recently, that I need to start giving and not just take from the great site that you have here!

Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds to you Neal!

Hi Johnny, no problem, I really appreciate the feedback. Yeah, I wish there was a feasible way to improve this system. FYI, the Downloads system is a 3rd party mod to vBulletin, and the guy who created it no longer supports it, so when it breaks, it's me who has to jury rig it :dead:

If I could get a good developer to take the existing system, make some improvements to it, I would seriously consider starting over. But I have not found anyone to do it, for hire or otherwise.

vBulletin is a good forum system, and it only costs a couple hundred dollars, so I have been really happy with the investment. The vB devs keep making new versions, but they really should assign someone to keep working on vB3, and add more stuff like this downloads, and an awards system, and more anti spam... but they don't.

The other limitation, the mods are created by a hundred different guys and uploaded by them, along with a dozen of other guys who help out. I put together a How To with instructions on categories but there are still some files in the wrong place, or some mods that either work for more than one sim, or are mislabeled...

I will see about that search improvement, maybe there is something we can do with that.

thanks, man!

Thanks for your information on the vB system, etc, and for your time and effort in giving me feedback. Prost Kamarad!
