View Full Version : UPLAY GAME LAUNCHER FAILURE WITH WINDOWS 7

Hi everyone. This has been a frustrating couple of hours for me. Fresh off my failure to run SH3 from a disc I bought a while ago, I tried to install and run SH5, also from a disc I just bought. Well, it installed, but when I tried to run the game I got a message that the UPlay Game Launcher had failed to install properly. This was after I had already created a UPlay account.
Does anyone have any suggestions? My OS is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Thanks a lot. Jeff

Hi there SS
From my Tutorial Post #180
If you are having a problem with Uplay crashing to your desk top then this may get you sorted out.
Unfortunately Uplay cannot be bypassed as it acts as a validation process each time you load your game.
2 things that I would suggest you to do.
First change your SH5 .exe application icon to run as an administrator.
Second go to your Program x86 folder
Ubisoft folder
Ubisoft Game Launch folder
Go to the first Ubisoft.exe application icon and change it to run as an administrator.
You might find that this makes the difference?
Thanks for the plug RDP

Hi Peter. Thanks so much for the help. Unfortunately, I'm really computer ignorant. I'm not sure how to do the things you suggest. I uninstalled the game. I'd have to install it again first.

Hi there,
Did you have a look at this thread: Here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211804&highlight=TheBerbster)
This stuff's all Greek to me. I don't even know what "TDW" and "JSGME" mean. :wah:

TDW is the modder TheDarkWraith
JSGME is the JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler

Hi SS
You should use a free Registry Cleaner like CCleaner from file hippo after uninstalling SH5 and then reboot your system before reinstalling.
I have amended my tutorial post #70 so I have made it easy for you and others now to use.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211804 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211804)
When you have reinstalled your game.
Go to the
Ubisoft folder
Silent Hunter 5 folder
Look for the ‘SH5.exe application icon.’
This is the round one with the picture.
Click on it once without opening it.
With your mouse now right click on it.
From the selection press ‘run as administrator.’
Click on it once again without opening it.
With your mouse now right click on it.
Look down the list and select ‘Pin to Taskbar’
Now exit using the red X
Now on your main drive probably showing as ‘System C’ look for the ‘program files (x86) folder.’
Double click on it to open it or right click with your mouse and select open.
Now look for the ‘Ubisoft folder’ and open it.
You will now see the ‘Ubisoft Game Launcher’ folder.
Double click on it to open it or right click with your mouse and select open.
Look for the first icon with a U picture on it.
This is the ‘Ubisoft Game Launcher icon’ .exe application that launches Uplay.
There are 2 of them but you only want the first one.
Click on it once without opening it.
With your mouse now right click on it.
From the selection press ‘run as administrator.’
Now exit using the red X
Now back on your desktop.
Click on the SH5 icon in your task bar to open SH5

Whew! I'm going to try this soon, after I sink a few more ships this morning in SH4.:) It's all so complicated for me. I've never done any of this stuff. I wish I had learned more about manipulating files and programs a while ago.
Oh. Peter. I have a question that's not related. I hope you don't mind. In SH4, is there a way to enlarge the protractor and other tools on the nav map? I can't read the numbers well enough. Thanks very much. Jeff

Hi Peter. Thanks for the offer of help. I definitely need some. I have no idea what to do with a download, such as the one you list here for enlarging the protractor, once I get it downloaded. It may sound hard to believe, but I've never done that kind of thing.

Hi SS
First of all a bit of discipline.
Make a new folder and call it ‘My SH4 Mod Store’ and put it somewhere convenient.
You will use this to download any SH4 mods too.
I am assuming you have JSGME installed?
If you do not then go to my tutorial Post #4 and carry out the step by step instructions.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211804 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211804)
You will also need 7 zip if you do not have it then here is the download link.
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html (http://www.7-zip.org/download.html)
Bigger Better Protractors
Download link
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom//downloads.php?do=file&id=3355 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=3355)
Click on the download link.
Click on Download Bigger Better Protractors
Find your new folder > ‘My SH4 Mod Store’
Click on Save.
Now go to your > ‘My SH4 Mod Store’ folder.
You will now see the 7 zip icon and next to it Bigger Better Protractors in a zipped format.
Double click on it or right click on it and select open.
You will now see a folder > Bigger Better Pro…
Click on Bigger Better Pro… 1 time and you will see it change colour now highlighted.
Now go to the Copy Tab above and you will see that it wants to copy it to your > My SH4 Mod Store’ folder.
Press OK.
Press the Red X to exit.
You will now see in your ‘My SH4 Mod Store’ folder the new folder showing
Bigger Better Protractors that you just copied.
Double click on it or right click on it and select open.
You will now see 2 items.
The first is the data folder.
The second is the text documentation ‘readme’ that tells you about the mod.
I would now suggest that you click 1 time on the ‘readme’ to highlight it.
Right click on it with your mouse and select ‘rename’
Press the ‘Del’ key and enter the name Bigger Better Protractors.
Press Enter.
Right click on it again and it will highlight.
Select ‘cut.’
Press the Blue arrow above over to the left.
You will see it say back to My SH4 Mod Store.
You should now be back in your My SH4 Mod Store folder.
Right click with your mouse and select ‘paste.’
You should now see 3 items in your My SH4 Mod Store folder.
You now need to find your Mods folder.
For example my path is D:\Games\Silent Hunter 4\Mods
Just click on each one until you see the Mods folder.
Our download if you remember was:
Zip File Bigger Better Protractors > Folder Bigger Better Protractors > Folder data > readme document.
The folder that has to go in your Mods folder is always the one before the data folder.
Click once on the folder Bigger Better Protractors.
Right click with your mouse and select ‘copy.’
Click 1 time on your Mod folder.
Right click with your mouse and select ‘paste.’
If you now open your JSGME you should see the mod on the left side waiting to be enabled.
You will notice that you still have the original as back up in your My SH4 Mod Store folder.
As you can see all this can be a bit long winded when you are learning.
I am quite happy to tutor you as and when required over the internet with any of your queries.

I work in simple terms but it can be a bit long.
I would suggest that you shade the text of this post and copy and paste it to your system PC/Laptop to the notepad if you do not have Microsoft Word.

Hi Peter. Thanks so much for your kind help. I really need someone to walk me through this stuff using clear, step-by-step instructions and not assuming that I know anything, because I really don't. :k_confused:
I don't have JSGME. I haven't downloaded any mods at all yet. I'll make the folder and put the text of your post in a good spot on my desktop. I do have Microsoft Word. When I feel brave, I'll try to implement your instructions. I'm afraid, though. I'm just not PC savvy at all. I'm like Po-Han in The Sand Pebbles film when Jake-Steve McQueen-was trying to teach him how the engines and boilers of the gunboat worked. Po-Han thought there were spirits in the machinery. That's kinda how I feel about computers. :)

Boy. Nothing is easy for me when it pertains to this stuff. I copied and pasted your instructions into a Microsoft Word document, and the the text is a light gray and difficult to read. I don't know how to change it, if I even can. I feel another "WAAH! coming on. :wah: HeeHeeHee.

Hi SS
In Microsoft Word look for the A with a colour underneath it.
The default colour is usually red.
The very small arrow to the right of it lets you select a different Font colour.
If you do not have the 'select all' preset tool showing you can either shade the text using your mouse or press CTRL + A.
Follow my instructions for JSGME using my tutorial post #4
For ease of use also download JSGME to your 'My Mods Store' folder and keep everything in one place.
Do not place folders containing data on the Desktop only 'Shortcuts' otherwise this will slow your PC start up.
To make a shortcut just right click on the folder and select 'Send to' then
'Desktop ( create shortcut )'

Hi Peter. I was able to copy your instructions into Microsoft Word in a readable format. Thanks.
I have made the SH4 Mods folder. As my first step, should I download the zip program? I actually think I have WinZip already on my PC somewhere. Do I really need a registry cleaner? Does it have any adverse effects?
After the zip program, what's next, download JSGME? after I download that I should install it, correct? I'm trying to get everything straight in my mind. Thanks. Jeff

Hi Jeff
If you have a look in your Control Panel for Programs and Features and have a look at the top of the list that is where 7zip will be and Winzip will be towards the bottom of the list if it has been installed.
I think 7z is easier to use than winzip but you can always give winzip a try.
The Registry Cleaner is a useful tool that is easy to use and the cleaner part of it can be used every day. Tutorial post #70.
When reinstalling the registry still has a lot of the previous installation in it and so needs to be removed.
When you reinstall there is always a possibility of a corruption.
Yes JSGME, as you cannot enable mods without it.
Everything you need to know is in my tutorials.
Just take your time reading the relevant tutorial.
Anything you do not understand you know where I am.

Rats! I don't have WinZip after all. I'll go for 7Zip then. Do I put that in my SH4 Mods file after I download it? Oh. No. That doesn't sound logical. Perhaps you already told me about that. I'll check.

I downloaded 7Zip, but when I tried to open it I got a message that said I didn't have an "associated program" to use to open it. That's ironic. I don't have a program to open a program that's supposed to open programs. Gadzooks!

Any of those - 7Zip, WinZip, WinRAR - are all just tools for sending files in a compressed form. They install anywhere, and are used to unpack the files. The unpacked Mod files are then placed in JSGME.
Oops. I seem to be a message behind.
Right-click the file and select 'Open With', then find and select 7Zip.

Hi Steve. No, I was trying to open 7Zip. I haven't downloaded anything else yet. Do I have to open 7Zip before I use it to open something else? I'm sorry if it's a stupid question. I'm no better than a chimp when it comes to this stuff. I never learned. Thanks.
