Ok, the year is 2017, and we have Russia-Ukraine open war going on, with NATO intervening on Ukrainian side.
One of the contested areas would be the Black Sea. What are your thoughts about the possible NATO posture there? What kind of forces could/would NATO deploy there and to what ends?
What do you think about the Turkish stance on that sort of conflict?
A Russian Black Sea Fleet OOB, to get things started:
Ok, lets do the naval stuff first. Out of the legacy ships we have:
- pr. 1164 (Slava Class) Missile Cruiser - Moscow, fresh from repairs/partial upgrade (went into dock recently).
- pr. 877 submarine (Alrosa) - fresh from repairs/partial upgrade (also went into dock recently).
- 2 pr. 1239 Small Missile Ships (2000 vintage).
New ships (deployed under GPV2020):
- 6 pr. 06363 submarines (last completed by late 2016, currently 3 are complete).
- 1-6 pr. 11356 Frigates (subject to power plant availability).
- 3 pr. 21630 Small Artillery Ships.
- 5-7 pr. 21631 Small Missile Ships.
Note the 2163X family is expected to be now based on the Black Sea - transfer from the Caspian Sea is possible via the river network.
Transfers from the Caspian Flotilla:
- 2 pr. 11661K Frigates.
Local Coastal Defence Forces:
- 1-2 Bastion systems (1 is already there, the 2nd is expected to go into Crimea vs Kurils).
- 1 Bal system (based on the eastern Black Sea coast).
- 1 Bereg artillery system (in Crimea).
Current aviation status:
Local aviation (in Crimea) is based around the newly formed 27th Air Division, which includes:
- 37th Mixed Air Regiment (Su24Ms and Su25s) - Gvardeiskoe.
- 38th Fighter Regiment (Su27SM and Su30M2) - Belbeck.
- 39th Helicopter Regiment - Dzhankoi.
In my opinion the Su24Ms are likely to be changed with the Su30M2s, which would be used as primary strike plane in the area, as this is the historic practice (replacement of Su24 series with Su30M2s in the Crimea).
Aviation outside of Crimea primarily would come from other Black Sea Fleet assets and from the Southern MD in general. Those assets would be primarily from Krumsk Air Force Base, though that depends on the scenario envisioned.
Air Defence in Crimea consists of (at this moment) comes from the 1096th SAM Regiment in Crimea, though I would need to look into specifics. In my opinion in 2017 scale the AD grouping in Crimea would consist of 3 SAM Regiments with the S300PM2 and some form of the SHORAD cover - such as Panzir.
