View Full Version : Why do I like looking at explosions so much?!
So my torpedoes are running straight and true, I should be periscope down and diving to safer depths, but I just have to stick around to see that explosion! Why do I like that so much?! :haha:

Because you're a sad, pathetic, morbid sod who likes to watch pixels die.
No, wait, that's me. :dead:
Either way, welcome to the club.

to prevent mis-claimed sinkings which was often the case. Much over-tonnage was claimed in pursuit of the Knight's Cross. Halsschmerzen — "sore throat" or "itchy neck;" was the term used to describe a reckless or glory-seeking commander, implying an obsession with winning the Knight's Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_German_military_terms#RK). Adjustments to tonnage after the war have considerably lowered many a U-boat ace's over-all tonnage score between what was claimed, misidentified tonnagewise through a periscope, or the explosion..."must have sunk the target claimed" by a harried kaleun seeking the 'cellar' to get his lily guilded by an outraged escort!.. I cheat and use the external cam to watch convoyed ships asplode, while my sub is busy hitting 50 fathoms. If they're alone, I'm often fixinta surface and finish 'em off with the deck gun. I like improvements of NSSM over stock: sometimes the valiant sailors will man their AA guns even as the ship is listing hopelessly.
Knowing the exact tonnage sunk has annoyed me since SH2. I'd like a system that let you claim ships and tonnage, then told you at the end of the war (or based on intercepts) what/how much you had actually sunk.

I like Steve's answer. It describes me too. And the explosions are pretty. Especially at night.

I often found myself acting similarly....sad lot we Kaleuns are :)
I will usually watch through the periscope, since I don't use the external to cheat.
Since USN skippers were encouraged to confirm sinkings, I don't see this as odd. Judging by the statistics, many of the claims of sinkings, based on sound, turned out to be false.

Fun to watch with the eternal cams... When we did the SS contest at Ubi I often ran the cams, but always had another serious game I played with no cams. Without cams takes getting use to and slower play, but fun not being able to see what it going on above you...not knowing if charges are getting close, evading, etc....you use sound more than site...Now, I keep my underwater dark with no fog so I can't see through the scope, but before I adjust that I would use the scope to from way deep to watch dd's and depth charges....I know, sad....
