Can't be classed as a "great" yet as he's current, but I'm sure he will be one day. Scroll forward to his 'Cockney routine' 4 minutes into this gig at the Apollo:

In my opinion, we can't consider "greatness" until about 20-25 years after they stop performing. If there are still fans paying money to see their material, then they can be considered for greatness.
There is a reason people still buy Marx Brother's movies and WC Fields performances 70-90 years later.

One can consider it an evolution of languanges. Take "hate" for instance. In the past, hatred really meant that. Now people hate broccoli. What wrong did that do? An airliner disaster today means the plane was delayed 50 minutes. People point guns at eachother to demand respect but when did anyone tremble with respect? In living memory means this week and to destroy someone means to have some good points in a debate. Best ever, see "in living memory". Great is good but not as good as best ever so great would more refer to best since 11 o'clock.
I never thought Tobey Maguire could be that good..
