People will go to the ends of the earth for their pets. We have to stump up ~£100 every 6 weeks for one of our rabbits to have recurring dental work done. It's all done in the name of love.
That said, I can see why people would be aghast at the £300 bill to treat what is traditionally thought of as a 'disposable' pet. IMHO, no pets are disposable.

£300 for an operation on a pet is dirt cheap.
We payed twice as much in one year just to treat our dogs ligament problems. No operation was involved.
I can see it on dogs cats rabbits but a goldfish!

Manure is gold and gold is manure.
It's all relative

How much?
We post out prices for our services on the hatch entering the bilge. Sometimes we have specials and we'll throw in a quart of bilge stew...

A fine example of why I pay pet insurance.
My dog is sitting at my feet in the man cave as I type this, loyal and reliable as ever....heck, even Steve talks to him when we're on Skype

Ditto on the insurance, so far this year a pancreatic scan £80 excess insurance has to stump up a further £450, plus two steroid shots one vitamin b shot and 3 different Anti biotics. Then there is a thyroid problem but that is under a different claim and is ongoing for 5 years. Also Two Cancer ops, within the last 3 years. My ins quote starting this Feb, £112 pm. But I'd hate to think how much I'd have paid without it.
He's my Boxer and I love the bugger to bits.

I paid $2.75 a piece to a local fisherman at Hell's Half Acre, ME for these pets . Then we boiled them alive and ate them.

Little Lhasa Louie, lying on the lounge, living large.
Lucky Lauren loves him so much.
Well when you consider how small the operation would have been, and the circumstances in which they would have had to have operated. Surprised it was possible at all, to be honest.
A similar operation on a cat or dog would probably be in four figure numbers. Sadly it's an expensive thing to have animals these days, and people wonder why the shelters are all so full...there's many good people out there who would treat their animals with care, if they could afford it, but sadly there's many who can afford it but just don't bother.
Besides, you scale that fish up a little and go for a Koi Carp...and you're probably looking at a three figure number just to buy the thing. :dead:

My uncle used to have Koi Carp and the cost £££££. :o
No idea of vet bills bet it was a packet.
They are quite beautiful fish though. Friendly too.

The amount I've spent on Rocky McBee's vet bills, I could have a whole legion of Bostons.:shifty:

I wonder if Koi Carp could be made into Gefilte fish?

Do Boxers and Bostons have more vet bills than the average dog? I was hoping to maybe someday have one for a pal. Seems like boxers don't live so long either from friends experiences. :wah:
The solution for goldfish or koi is to have a pond in FL that a blue heron can raid. Darn bird killed all my goldfish, and a nice size koi. The koi he just killed because he couldn't even carry it off. If you want fish for pets raise Tilapia, some purina and a filter cleaning once a month and they're good to go.

@em2nought
Can't answer for Bostons, never owned one. Boxers all I can say is be prepared....... Potential heart, kidney and cancer problems ( the thyroid was a new one on me ). Hopefully I should get around twelve years from my lad, according to my vet, possibly more if I'm lucky. Boxers are great fun but tons of work, they still think they are puppies till around 5yrs of age. So like I say, be prepared!
Best regards.
