Richard Burton says:

"Have you ever seen or met anyone famous, like wot I am? Did you just shrug your shoulders and let the moment pass, or (like that old lady in my movie, Battle Of Sutjeska) did you run up and paw them cravenly? I'd like to know, unless it was Kim Kardashian in which case don't bother..."

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold

Alec Leamas -
What the hell do you think spies are? Moral philosophers measuring everything they do against the word of God or Karl Marx? They're not! They're just a bunch of seedy, squalid bastards like me: little men, drunkards, queers, hen-pecked husbands, civil servants playing cowboys and Indians to brighten their rotten little lives. Do you think they sit like monks in a cell, balancing right against wrong?

Burton's best film ever. :yeah:

I'd draw up a list of notable people I've met in the past but very few here would believe me.

Sporting examples alone would include Pele, Ali, Keegan, Daglish, Souness, Shilton and beating the world darts champion taking out 69 in a two dart 19, bull finish.

Best if I don't name royal family members and politicians.

Back when I was twelve my stepmother's uncle was head prop man for a show called Valentine's Day, with Tony Franciosa and Jack Soo (who would later be famous for Barney Miller). My dad and I got to watch one day's filming, which I really enjoyed when I watched that scene when the show aired later. At one point I went outside for some reason, and a grown-up was right behind me so I held the door for him. Mr Soo gave me a polite "Thank you." Of course I was thrilled.

I did get to meet X-15 pilot Scott Crossfield, which was also exciting.

Had a conversation with James B. Sikking, who was big on Hill Street Blues at the time.

Burton's best film ever. :yeah:
Could not agree more. It's a fantastic, and realistic, spy story, and sticks very closely to the book.

Living here in Los Angeles, in particularly, Hollywood, I've seen or met quite a few celebrities and politicians, but I usually don't make a fuss over them. The only one I recall went a bit out of my way to talk to was Alan Hale, the Skipper on Gilligan's Island. He owned a restaurant in West Hollywood and I saw him standing outside its doors one night and I went over to say hello and shake his hand. He was very gracious and seemed to actually enjoy being greeted...

Steve, I saw Jack Soo a few times around Hollywood. He was a part owner of a Chinese restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. I once took my mother there and just as I was telling her there was very little chance of seeing a celebrity actually on Hollywood Blvd., in from the back of the restaurant came Jack Soo. He had a sheaf of papers in his hand and he sat down at a nearby table, took out a pen and began to do some calculations, so I assume they may have bee the restaurant's receipts. My mother went over to say hello and he was very nice to her...

Fast forward a few years. Jack Soo had been diagnosed with cancer and the news was all over the tabloids. I took my mother to a local supermarket. While I was loading the groceries into the car, my mother suddenly took off. I turned to see where she was going and noticed Jack Soo crossing the lot. My mother ran up to him and proceeded to say she had read about him in the National Enquirer and how sorry she was to hear about his cancer. She then proceed to tell him about some of the various treatments she had heard about on TV. I was very embarrassed about this, but Jack was very polite and patient with her and thanked her for her concern. He was a true gentleman and I was very sad when he passed a short time afterward...

My brother happened to be at Hampton Court Palace on a school trip when this movie was being made; he would've been thirteen years old. Bugger me if Anthony Quayle, no less, didn't come sidling up and beg a swig of water from his army canteen he used to carry around with him (it was a hot day).

We were in the back of my in-laws' car on a motorway in (I think) Wiltshire many years ago when a car overtook us with, bugger me, the former England cricketer David Gower in the front passenger seat. His blonde locks were rippling in the breeze: it was a hot summers day and he had his arm out the window. Of course, it would've been even better if he'd been doing this:

Another one I've just remembered: On the Tube a few years ago, I walked into a tall bloke wearing a cap and shades. I thought nothing of it, then 30 seconds later thought 'Bugger me, it's Will Smith'.

Last year, naturalist David Bellamy came to our town to help celebrate the planting of some trees. We read about it in the local paper but we couldn't be arsed to go, because guess what? Some 35 years ago my wife was in London on a school trip and, bugger me, who should come bowling out of a Travel Agent's but naturalist David Bellamy. He was in a big hurry (probably had some ants to study somewhere) so he ignored her and hurried on his way, leaving her open-mouthed with wonder.

One question though: why does he waste his time on all this ecological stuff when he could be raking in a fortune at this time of year in Santas Grottoes up and down the land? "PERRFICT!"

I was out with my wife and boy last week at the local Garden Centre, when we came upon a curtain of glittering plastic strands all hanging down and frosty like. Beyond was a magical winding pathway piled high on either side with shaving-foam and cuddly squirrels, then finally a fairy-tale door all knobbly and wooden like (well, cardboard really). We paid £9.99 to an elf wearing a name tag (Gary), pushed open the door and, bugger me, who do you think was sitting there??

Back in the 1980s, my old mum and I were taking a stroll in the countryside near Hildenborough in Kent, where she lived as a girl. I remarked on a plane which was chugging slowly across the sky: "Look, Mum," I said, "That's a de Havilland Tiger Moth, that is." She rolled her eyes and we walked on.

I tuned in to "Test Match Special" on Radio4 the following day and listened as Henry Blofeld asked David Gower, the former England cricketer, what he'd been doing over the weekend. Bugger me if David Gower didn't say he'd been flying over Kent in his Tiger Moth!

Many years ago my father-in-law, who used to be a fish farmer, was asked to help remove the fish from a lake on the Sussex estate of the famous entertainer Engelbert Humperdinck (who famously kept the flag flying for the UK in the last Eurovision Song Contest). The lake was to be dredged after first transporting the fish to a place of safety.

D'you know they never caught sight of him the whole time they were there? They never even heard him singing in the bath.

When I was 15/16, I went on holiday to the States and during a visit to San Francisco I did the usual tourist thing of visiting the Rock. On the day of my visit Leon 'Whitey' Thomson (a former inmate) was there doing a book signing for his latest book. I bought a copy, got it signed and shook the hand of an infamous part of history. Strange that I've only just remembered about it. I've still got the book upstairs too.

My bestest mate knew Liam Neeson when he was a kid (my bestest mate, that is, not Liam Neeson). His family were a bit luvvy back then and Liam (I feel I can call him that now) used to go 'round their house to visit and talk about acting and stuff.

He also knew the bald guy in Game Of Thrones, which of course I find much more interesting...

Very nice indeed! I had the pleasure of meeting her on Hemingway and Gelhorn doing movie security in Oakland and Livermore; The old Oakland rail station was revamped for the Spanish hotel scenes and a huge pasture in Livermore was the battle ground http://i.lv3.hbo.com/assets/images/movies/hemingway-and-gellhorn/video-stills/clip-tease-3071677-6-mezz-300.jpgfor the Spanish Civil War scenes. Indoor scenes were at San Francisco's Pier 80. Simple job at the pasture: keep the owner's breeding Hereford bulls in the pasture and the looky-loos out.https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/98/Hemingway_%26_Gellhorn_poster.jpg/220px-Hemingway_%26_Gellhorn_poster.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hemingway_%26_Gellhorn_poster.jpg) So-so flick unfortunately.
