Hi All,

What a great forum and community. Tonnage of information for sure ;-).

New to SH3 here and I am really loving the game. Just completed my first patrol in a type VIIB/1940 and no crash dives yet - but I know the pain is coming!

One thing I find a bit challenging in the game is crew management. Any tips on keeping my Sub-Lieutenants at their stations consistently? Short of remembering their names and their default posts it has been difficult to keep them at the same station. They eventually need sleep and I invariably forget where they were originally stationed once rested. I assume that keeping them at a single station as much as possible will result in faster "experience" points? or does this not matter?

Some other questions:

When awarding medals - is it better to spread them among the crew or stack one particular person up?

I can't seem to get the hydrophone working and the sonar officer rarely reports any sound contacts, even when I know there are vessels in the vicinity. Will these come with a later sub or as a sub upgrade?

Finally, is there an easier way to see the flags of the other ships at a distance? Even at 6x zoom on the periscope I sometimes have a hard time figuring out if they are neutral or foe?

thanks for any advice.

Welcome to SUBSIM.

One of the mod I can suggest you is H.sie's Hardcoded Fixes if you haven't tried that. One of the mod's option is send automatically your Watch Officer back to the conning tower after your uboot surfaces.

If you are tired to manage your crew, I can suggest you to use SH3 Commander to set the fatigue either to "no fatigue" or there are a couple of different fatigue models. There is a post in this forum whatever is a job for the Captain to manage each crew one by one or not. Both sides have strong arguments. For me, I go with GWX 8 Hours Fatigue Model, It adds dimension to the game.

When I need to manage my officer I generally do this.

In case of no danger, I only man the Chief Officer and The Watch Officer. The other 2 officer are resting. One in the Stern Quarters and One in the Bow Quarters. When the officers on duty became to get tired I replace the one in the stern quarters with the Chief Officer and the one in the Bow Quarters with the Watch Officer. If you have more than 4 officers, and you don't have the space to rest them, try sending them to the compartments where they won't get tired compared to the other departments.

Repair and Torpedo Rooms (even if there are no repair or torpedo loading/unloading) are the most tiring compartments if I don't remember wrong. The less tiring ones are Electric and Diesel Engine compartment I believe.

Welcome RS.

Crew management is not for me and I select the no fatigue option in Commander - it's a 'gamey' option, but I'd rather that than be put off the game by micro management.

Hydrophones are one of the first upgrades you can get but I'm not sure of the details of how much more effective they are.

I often struggle with identifying flags too I'm looking forward to any tips from other captains.

The flag identification becomes harder if you are far then 1500 meters to the target. Its harder in late war since you won't get that close to a convoy. However if they are sailing with the a convoy, then its definitely a target for you.

For single merchants, if they are in enemy control waters, the odds are high that it is safe to sink them.

Use Notepad or some other text editor to manually edit this file: C:/Ubisoft/Data/Cfg/Basic.cfg

Scroll down about 1/3 of the file to [FATIGUE_COEF]

Replace all positive values with zero. Leave all negative values (only in comp 6 and comp 7) untouched.

This removes fatigue from the game so you don't have to spend a lot of time on crew management.:yeah:

Here's the complete cut-and-paste edit:

Thanks for the warm welcome and good advice! Will disable fatigue in the game and give it a go. The crew can handle it :-).

To quote a famous captain..."All you need is good people. Good people."

Welcome Riversub to a great community.

As regards flag identification, the GWX3 supermod increases the attack periscope magnification from the stock 6x to 10x.

They eventually need sleep and I invariably forget where they were originally stationed once rested. I assume that keeping them at a single station as much as possible will result in faster "experience" points? or does this not matter?I don't particularly care who mans a station, as long as the station is manned. If you double-click on a compartment, it will fully man it as long as there are people to man it. I do not use the various "diving stations, surface stations, etc." buttons down at the bottom right. As I recall there was a possible crash bug or something related to those anyway.

In Stock SH3 the only serious officer bug is the WO never goes up onto the bridge when you surface. You have to manually place him there unless you install the H.sie patch.

When awarding medals - is it better to spread them among the crew or stack one particular person up?Once your man gets the second-to-highest possible medal, he no longer fatigues. So I try to get my sonar/radio guys non-fatiguable first, then my officers, then my torpedomen, etc.

Some people turn off fatigue but to me building up an awesome crew is part of what makes you get a feeling of investing in them.

I can't seem to get the hydrophone working and the sonar officer rarely reports any sound contacts, even when I know there are vessels in the vicinity. Will these come with a later sub or as a sub upgrade?

The more skill they have, the better they will operate. Though I find that there are still times even with the best crew that you will hear things manually that they don't report.

Welcome too!

For the hydrophone to work you need to be below 10 meters depth. It doesn't work above it. So you really should dive to periscope depth to make use of it. Also, the various models have deaf-zones at the rear due to the engine/prop. Some also on the bow. Anyway, if you listen yourself than you can pretty much hear everything upto 35 km radius. There is even a volume boost button on the device to help you a bit. Just click at the right place. (Aside from your the volume knob on speakers if you have them)

The AI crew make up their own mind though if they feel like reporting something. Sometimes they can be quite late. But deaf as a doornail they surely aren't. Even in the beginning. Unless you always go fast or at flank speed.
