Hello all! From my previous experience, this forum has members with vast knowladge of ships, not rarely bigger than game designers ;) I`m now designing naval tactical war game, one very important part is crew managment, as there won`t be enought crew to operate all BB`s functions.

I`ve done research on IOWA`s crew demend, found out there is 79 crew member needed for operating each main turret (source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wT1xkRpCKk) and 13 people for each secondary turret (source: wiki).

But I still don`t know how many people is needed for targeting each turret (is 79 counted in, or they are separeted in fire control room?). I know each main gun can be fired separetly, so is there different person to targert for each gun?

And how it is with secondary guns?

Also, I only found there is around 20 people in engine room, but it is only estimated number. Also, there is 8 boilers, but only four of them are used in standard speed.

Edit:
I have found this beauty:
http://www.maritime.org/doc/destroyer/fiveinch/index.htm#pg16

from that document, 5 inch gun need three person (right?) to aim:

Pointer, trainer and sight setter.

Rest besides capitan is mostly reloading crew.

So for now with my knowladge it would be:
3 targeting crew, 8 reloading crew and capitan.

If anyone have any knowladge, I do hope to create as accurate game as it is possible, but therer is so little knowladge on internet, wich I can find, and my budged (almos zero) doesn`t allow me to spend more time in library rooms unfortunatly... I really appriciate any help.

There were two modes of mount operation that the crew was trained and expected to know. The primary mode was "automatic control", where the mount was slaved to the fire control system. But if the fire control system was damaged, or if the ship's power was out; the mount could continue the action in "local control". In US service, most gun crews were US Navy personnel. Even the civilian Merchant Marine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchant_Marine) ships had a small detachment of the Navy Armed Guard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy_Armed_Guard) on board to operate the 5"/38 and other guns.

Good to be here, thank You :)

Aktungbby thank You for Your inquiry, it helps a lot, I propably will have to increse needed crew for 5''/38 of 27 to be in full operational state, I know that won't be very accurate, but it is sometimes hard to incorporate all details and have good gameplay at same time (because of 79 crew needed to operate trigun 16''/50).

But at least it will have some rightnes now :) Automatic control is directed from another room right? And change between automatic contol and local control changes only who is aiming gun, right?

Maybe You know on what depends needed crew to operate 5''/38 (my gramma is alful, I know, and sorry for that). In another words, why 5''/38 would need as many crew as 27?

One more question, maybe somebody know how to name a group of people who are responsible for targeting?

One thing I have found is trainers, but... do really people will correctly understand it? I didn`t knew trainers beside name for teachers is also name for targeters (but there isn`t that word for profesion - a targeter - is it?) ;)
