Hi folks. So question - I'm brand spanking new. I installed GWX, JSGME, SH3C, and when I'm in game on patrol and a contact is spotted, for example at heading 033, is that at heading 033 true? or 033 relative to me?

I should also ask while I'm here, can I rotate the draggable tools on the map screen?

EDIT: If you're talking about the protractor, compass etc, then yes :)

It depends on exactly what the message says.

If it says something like: "Ship spotted, BEARING XXX degrees." that is relative to you.

If it says something like: "Convoy reported, HEADING XXX degrees." that is the true course.

The word "Heading" always refers to course and is always stated relative to true North.

The word "Bearing" always refers to direction and is stated relative to your 0 degrees - ie, dead ahead.

"Bearing" as used in this definition is more properly called "relative bearing". There is also an "absolute bearing", which refers to direction relative to true North. But in SH3, SH4, and SH5, the word "bearing" is used exclusively to mean "relative bearing".

I've always had trouble keeping them separate.
Now I tell myself that Heading is the direction you are going, Bearing is the direction you are looking.
