Going to try to get into studying the rules for the old Avalon Hill Submarine tonight. There is a vassal module to play this game online or solo on your computer.

I had that game way back. You will have much more fun with the newest sub game called "The Hunters". I didn't make it or anything, just love it.

This is a solitaire game and worth a look. It is in its second print run.

Another version of it called "Silent Service" is to be released next summer/fall and that covers US boats in the Pacific.
