Reservoirs are full in Napa officially so the summer drought is alleviated after three days and 6 inches of rain. Sunny in the high 60's today so off to sail on the bay with brand new Dacron sails and a new auto-furler 150% sized jib. so my job just got easy. Winds are a tepid 5 knots though so we'll probably just be motoring against a wicked outtide in the Carquinez Strait. Lunch is on the captain today!:arrgh!:

I would rather have the snow and freezing cold than the constant specter of earth quakes. I have experienced an earth quake or two in my 68 years. My D-I-L had not ever experienced one until the one that was centered north of Ottawa, ON a few years ago.

Are you loaded or empty going to Atlanta? Not that it matters, but if you are loaded and the load will freeze, then you could be in all kinds of caa-caa. I think myself I would wait it out. IF all you got left on the week is 8 hours, then why not reset in Baltimore and then have all kinds of hours.

I'm running Heat in Transit, meaning I have my tractor coolant lines connected to the tanker internal heater coils. So, no worries about the product cooling off.
I meant, I left 8 hours of my 11 driving on the table. I pick up 10:30 hours at midnight, so I will check the weather and traffic in 8 hours. If the roads are ok, I'd rather keep moving south...this is a bad place for me :) Too many people per square mile. :arrgh!:

It actually bigger than it looks. I pay for what they call a 1 1/2 driveway. We park 3 cars and can get out without moving another vehicle. I have a contract for the winter, $325.00. He lets us out in the morning and comes back to clean it up. Up until a month ago I hardly saw him. It's a big outfit. Those photos were taken in the western part of the province where we used to live. We were there yesterday for a wedding if you can believe that. Not sure how much help I'll be, but we have a septic tank set-up. I would guess that the problem, if it's caused by freezing, is most likely at the top end where the pipe is nearer the surface; how many inspection covers between your toilet and the tank?

V8 4 wheel drive. Ford American Steel. I wont beat you in a race, but I can trash your car in an accident, with little damage to me
I bumper pushed 10 people this winter in their cute little Hondas and Mazdas. Slippin and sliding, stressing with their coffees in their hands, and back tires spinning. Ties all loose on the neck, late for work because they did not allow for extra time. You know the typical jerk off who makes winter driving harder.
Same jerk offs who burn past me off a stop light and smile at me smugly while holding the same cup of coffee in the summer time.

So has your bog thawed out now??
I bought a 50' drain snake, and when I got home the D-I-L said that it was going down somewhat better. Not perfect but a little better. I plunged it a couple of times and it seems better. No leaks into the unfinished basement that we can see. We've also got the downstairs wood stove on, pumping the heat that way. Time will tell. The good thing is that running water will thaw frozen whatever.
Update; the bog is working more or less okay. We've got another 4" or so of snow coming along with 30 mph winds. I can expect a fair amount of drifting. This is a good thing.
There are plans in place to dig up the sewage line and put 2" styrofoam on both sides and 4 or 5 layers on top of it this summer. We just need to wait until the ground thaws.

Spring is on the way. Overnight temperatures are above zero F and inching their way up to the freezing point. Next Tuesday through Friday the highs forecast are in the thirties with none of them going below freezing.
I am going to build a new wood room (26'x8'x7') downstairs, directly in line with the window we throw the wood through. That way I can get a hay bale elevator and lower it to its' lowest point and just chuck the wood onto the elevator and it will carry the wood into the room. As the room gets full, pull the elevator back from the window.

My sump pump will be running every 5 minutes, soon. I have a spare (new) and a portable pump (2" Honda) mounted on a hay wagon with a couple of tanks and a discharge hose as well.
My neighbours' house burned down three years ago in the summer and over the course of the wet fall, his basement filled up with water and froze. Come the spring he tried to borrow my spare sump pump to pump out the basement. He was going to run it off a generator. I looked at the situation and took him the wagon mounted water pump and 12 hours later the water was gone.

A river runs through it whenever the water table rises from rain or melting snow.:-?
Having an aquifer directly under the house doesn't help but, it's good for the well.
have you 'French drained' the house perimeter or basement slab perimeter? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_drain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_drain) Had to do my parent's basement and run dehumidifiers constantly in Pennsylvania; my bother still has the problem along the Schukyl River in Royersford...along with his cancer causing radon gas filtering unit. http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/radon-abatement-zmaz87sozgoe.aspx (http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/radon-abatement-zmaz87sozgoe.aspx). Although those temperatures are inviting, IF we were to get those suddenly we would have wide spread flooding of epic proportions. Nova Scotia would have it a lot worse. Their only consolation is that the extra water could go into the ocean.
I would much rather have a slow warmup, a little below freezing at night and a little above in the day time.

There’s another number that puts this winter into perspective.
That 159 centimetres of snow sitting at the airport is 10 times the normal amount of snow on ground for this time of year. Cote said the Charlottetown average for this time of year is 16 centimetres.

Not really. We usually get a false spring in late February or early March that causes the trees to bud too early and then we get a snowstorm and one last freeze. The snow in the picture above had fallen off the trees by noon the next day and melted off the roof causing a gutter to overflow. Six handfuls of Maple seeds were promptly removed from the downspout. It sounded like a toilet flushing when all that water drained out.:D

Yes, good old petrified carbon anthracite.
Side effect: My stove operates off a thermostat. If the air isn't cold enough outside, along with solar heating of the house, the stove goes to a low burn and the chimney stops drafting or it back drafts from the wind.

My woodstove doesn't do that very often, but when it does we just cut the intake air damper down a bit and eventually she will draw again. Sometimes a handful of wadded up newspaper stuffed in the chimney and lit will work. Other times corrugated cardboard. I don't have a damper in my chimney. She's straight up.

Do you need to sweep your chimney every heating season?
Nope! :D
Anthracite doesn't produce creosote. The fly ash stays mainly in the pipes. I disassemble the pipe system in the spring and wash them out with baking soda and water to cut back on the rust. I'm considering going with double walled piping that has the stainless steel inner sleeve before heating season begins again this fall.
swamprat69er
04-05-15, 02:37 PM
That double wall pipe is about $100.oo a 2' section up here. EXPENSIVE! I've got a 6"diameter chimney in the kitchen 15' long and a 7" in the basement 23' long and they both must be swept every summer without fail. As the oil furnace gets cleaned every year as well. I sweep my own wood chimneys and hire the furnace out. Every 5 years I get a pro in to sweep the wood chimneys and do an inspection on them as well.

During the afternoon about 3 I went for a walk on the back yard, (remember there is still 2' of snow in the bush) and on the side of the hill the septic bed is under I caught me a Copper Bellied Water Snake. It was a little dopy as it didn't slither away when I stopped over top of it, so I picked it up and took it into the house so the D-I-L (she's a Brit) could see one up close.
