View Full Version : Some questions regarding stadimeter and recognition manual

Hello,
I've got a few questions regarding the stadimeter and recognition manual. I am using the following mods:
NewUI by TDW, version 7.4.2 (the current version)
Open Horizons II
Back when I played SH4, I was rather good at manual targeting. In SH5, it all seems a bit frustrating. I know the theory, but I can't find the data I need. So, here's what is going wrong. The questions:
How do I open the recognition manual. For now, the only thing I can do is click the ship name in the XO dialog, showing a list of ship types and silhouettes. This gives only the most basic of information, being gross tonnage, top speed and draft. Length and mast height seem to have been omitted.
What's worse, as soon as I unlock the target (for instance when I lower the scope), I can't see the entire XO dialog anymore. Surely, there must be a recognition manual somewhere?
The 'Send mast height to TDC' button is dysfunctional. All ships have a mast height of 20 metres. Which seems a bit odd. I'm perfectly able to adjust the mast height in the XO dialog, but I can't find a correct value.
Locking targets is a pain anyway. Ships clearly visible, beyond a - give or take - 6 kilometre range can't be locked, regardless of weather. The XO seems to be happier about locking escorts, than he is about locking juicy liners.
So, I know this game was broken on release, and I am wondering if anyone knows what's going on. I'd be perfectly happy to install a mod that fixes this behaviour.

I think mast height is broken. Had the same issue before.
if i remembered correctly, it seems that mast height is at different points for each type of ship, which makes it even worse.
Maybe someone else can help you.

Go to the Gunner icon 3rd from the left.
Click on the first icon > Torpedo Attack
Click on icon 1 > Ships identification
Go back to the Gunner Icon and select Icon 4 > Follow selected target.
If you now go to > Range you should be able to use the Stadimeter.
When the gunner identifies the target the mast height is automatically sent to the TDC
You will see the mast height showing.
You do not really need a recognition manual.
You will notice that the torpedo depth is also automatically set but can be manually adjused to the hull diagram.

Thanks,
I follow these steps each time. There are two issues with this. Firstly, the mast height is not automagically sent to the TDC. When I click the small checkbox below the (correct) ship, the mast height in the stadimeter dialog is still 20,0 m. Secondly, whenever a wave hits the scope, I lose the lock on target, making it rather difficult to do anything.

Strangely, when I let the weapons guy identify the target, the draft diagram is correctly represented. I've also found out, after some experimenting, that is actually impossible to change mast height manually by scrolling. What's going on here?

There is a bug with the stock game where all mast heights are 20m - TDWs UI mod fixes this:yep:
are you sure you have installed that mod correctly - many don't
For the rec manual - TDWs UI mod also has this fixed. He renamed it to SOAN
It has all the info you could want about the ships - there is also a "more info" button to click that will open up a window with some history about each (well worth checking out)
Using the TDC
There are two options for feeding info into the TDC - the first is what you are trying to do using the XO box
Another perhaps better way is to use the dials that pop into view when you enter a scope station (again this is added by TDWs UI)
There are also some tutorials (click my sig for download) that will run in game when you use TDWs UI. These tutorials will take you through step by step how to use the TDC, even flashing up what buttons to click.
Hope this helps

As far as I can tell, I have. I can see thee updated UI, and the TDC in periscope view. I'll try to reinstall it this evening.

So, how would I bring it up? I have literally clicked each button in the UI, and tapped each button on my keyboard.

The problem is not so much that I don't know how to perform an attack, the problem is that the stadimeter seems bugged to me. Despite using TDW's new UI mod. I'll keep you guys updated should I find a solution.

Pressing E should bring up charts and SOAN. If you can`t see it try to delete xxx_draggables.TDW from game folder and restart the game. Found this solution here and it helped me when my SOAN disappeared. Id your target in SOAN, mark target with space and then you are able to send data from SOAN to TDC. Works perfectly for me. Also you don`t need to use "lock on target" at all. Space is enough and you have more freedom in aiming at any parts of enemy ship you want. Also helpful in fixing small errors in AOB without adjusting a dial. I found not using a "lock" more realistic also.

Yeah I have also found that sometimes is difficult to lock the target with attack peri.using space bar...and that happens when I`m running more then 1 knot. But when I use UZO i can lock without any problem.

Thanks! All the time, I had been bringing up the user charts, but I was a bit daft. I didn't think about dragging the tab of the SOAN all the way out!
With 'locking' I meant not locking the scope, I should have said have the XO (the pirate nazi) 'designate' a target.

I`m happy that my first post helped ya  I also recommend getting rid of the pirate man and his crappy recognition manual. You can do it in TDW`s Option File Editor at XO TDC tab. Just enable Manual Targeting Enforce.
