Whew! I can tell you, that looks pretty sketchy. I cannot imagine being the pilot in that situation. Hats off.

It's interesting to land like that. I did it a few times with a glider. Just don't forget to point the nose down the runway just before you touch down and be ready to correct your heading immediately as the plane will want to turn into the wind again.

O'Hare is notorious for crosswinds, it's not the 'Windy City' for nothing!

Otherwise known as 'crabbing' the aircraft into the crosswind. (The tower-noting the aircraft's #- was helpful; "increase landing speed SIR!":o) Not so much the wind, 15 knots-according to my ancient logbook, as the lift of heated air off the black asphalt to prevent a by-the-book touchdown. A last second kick of the rudder to align-as you, the stall-alarm horn and the runway; all meet on a planet spinning at 1000 mph...making flying sorta' interesting. Flew into Scranton, PA one evening and the pilot misjudged his altitude just a hair. Dropped us onto the runway, literally, from about thirty feet.
That airport was scooped out of the top of a mountain ridge and the runway has an almost vertical drop at the end of it.

As I deplaned I tell the pilot; " Nice landing, hotshot.":haha:

I have experienced a landing in crosswind once. On a flight between San Francisco to Los Angels, the pilot encountered very strong turbulence. It was so severe, not only the passengers were ordered to take their seats and buckle up, the flight attendants were also so ordered. Interestingly, the pilot made no announcements regarding the turbulence; the order was passed via the attendants before they strapped themselves in their seats forward. It was a wild ride and got even wilder when the plane started to make its landing approach. It was obvious there were very strong cross winds, so the pilot came in under more power than usual. The minute the wheels hit the ground, the plane lurched sharp left, then sharp right. The plane centered up on the runway and the pilot reversed the engines full and the plane seemed to be acting like it was aloft in a strong head wind. The plane didn't start to lose speed until we were well down the runway. When the plane made a turn off the main runway, it seemed to skid slightly and, through the window, I noticed the wing tip barely missing a small structure by only a couple of feet. The plane came to a very abrupt halt just short of the terminal. All during this, there was a strange silence in the plane's cabin. Once the plane stopped there was a brief pause, then there was a round of loud applause...

That was as close as I have ever come to really being worried during a flight. I don't even want to really consider what it would be like to make one of those 'sideways' landings...

The entire landing gear gets a hit from the side. Not really good for it either.:dead:
