In the Career game, can I switch to another sub or do I have to begin a new career with a new sub?

Here:

SH4 will offer you a new sub once you get far enough along in the game, actual timing will depend on available boat date and your previous performance.

Most times if you do well in 3 or so missions you will be offered a new command or receive a promotion.
