I tried this mission earlier with no success there were DD's everywhere so I went looking for information. This is a very interesting story in my opinion which catapulted the CO to near star status in Germany. Hitler even personally gave him a medal along with a dinner for his crew.

The link is to the story of 'The Bull of Scapa Flow' about Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien the Commanding Officer, U-47 who commanded the mission. This goes into detail on the timing and some would say luck that played a part in its success.

I also found another map which shows the depths to be found in the area.

Hopefully some members might find this history interesting to read about as I did and will enjoy it.

This is my first posting hopefully I did not break any rules or what not:o

Welcome Aboard! :sunny:

No, you've done nothing wrong. You might be interested to know that by-and-large most Subsim members are quite familiar with the story. One of the missions in the old Silent Hunter II was to attack Scapa Flow. It was even the subject of the final episode of The Silent Service, a TV show back in the '50s that was otherwise exclusively dedicated to US submarine operations.

That said, this version is well told and well worth reading. Thanks for sharing it.
