Its mid December 1940 in the GF grid area and I find a contact in the early morning gloom. I close in on the surface and the last few hundred meters submerged. I pop up my scope for my final checks and I look at the flag. Its a damm meatball. What is a Japanise merchant doing in the north atlantic?
Testing out their new photocameras no doubt. Yep, you are not the first reporting sighting them. They were not at war yet, so there is nothing to stop them from trading with Europe. Besides, they had singed a treaty with Germany in 1936, so I'm sure they are just shipping diplomatic material.

You know those Japanese... they're awesomely weird. That's why they're in the North Atlantic. Probably going from country to country selling copies of Attack on Titan.

Wait, Attack on Titan was not published back then. Do we have a case of severe Zipang here?

I have also spotted Japanese merchants, at least once.
