Just digging up some more on this film.
Perhaps loosely based on this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand_%28nuclear_war%29

Notice the 2 pilots dead and the machines still waging war (dropping bombs etc) long after everyone is dead.
Pretty interesting.

If you are at all interested in other short films by Russian directors (and others)

Ruin also looked particularly intersesting and may end up being a feature length well worth watching

That Paths of Hate was pretty neat. The one with the undying war machines was good as well.

I went to school with Wes Ball the one that did Ruin we where in the same grade in school we used to be good friends at one time but drifted apart in high school. He was always into film making.

I do wonder though why in sci-fi they nearly always portray WW2 like warfare.

Nearly always is a bit strong.
Some of the films i linked have ww2 themed material.

A film, be it short or full-length with ww2 material will always be easily marketable.

Unless of course you are a big shot director and don't need to use popular marketing material (ww2 flavour) to sell or promote your skills.

The notion of sci-fi being only about futuristic war fare, if that is what the film is about in the first place, is misguided.

WW2 themes in films serve their purpose very well.
The fascination and intrigue of ww2 themed films will never die out.

Certainly more popular than a sci fi with green little men.

And...more believable.

And heck, a sci fi, like some of those linked, with a ww2 element to them are pretty darn awesome imo.

I wasn't talking about the films that you have linked, I appologise for any confusion my unclear statement lead to.

My point was (and is) that most sci fi series with star ship combat, essentially use WW2 like naval combat practices/combat style. This is especially true for the Star Wars series for example.

In the original OP video this is represented by the (for the example):
- propeller driven bomber.
- use of short ranged cannon based weapons.

I think they this because the human element of WWII techonolgy creates an element of excitment that would not be as easy to portray other wise. It creates tension.

For example in Star Wars in final battle Darth Vader is about to destroy Lukes X-wing you are the edge of your seat wondering how Luke will survive. With more computerized action the tension would be lost you not have the good vs evil feel if it was just pushing a button. Of course I see Star Wars (4,5,6) as closer to WWI air combat.

The first film for example would have dull without that element. Also creative license and alternate time means that you create your own future or past in which techonolgy advanced in diffrent way than it has in our world assuming the story even takes place in our exact universe.

Sound still does not travel in vacuum.

And yes, I wish sci fi was realistic, such a horrible person I am (and no, I don't like Gravity either for the blunders they made there).

Never watched Gravity but just want to point out that is science fiction not science fact.

The sounds in space thing is another effect of the audio visual nature of film and the fact one must keep the viewer interested.

Kubrick pulled of the vacum and no sound in 2001 again though he used the silence to add effect in that case the silence added tension. In other films like Alien the ship making noise helps convey a feeling of dread.

Not saying you are horriable person myself the real world can be enough to deal with. When I read a book or watch a movie I want an escape from reality.

It is about the willing suspense of disbelief actually in my case (or lack of) I think.

Not sure I follow you.:hmmm:

What is a good example of sci-fi to you? Film seeing as that is topic.

That is the issue, no Sci Fi work quite fits my criteria, maybe I should lower them :(

That said I did like the 2001 when I was younger.

Maybe focus more on the story and less on the methodolgy or feasiability of it the techonolgy anyway. In 2001 the alien techonolgy was supposed to be so advanced that it was beyond human understanding.
