Kim Jong Un has been conspicuously absent even from important state events, and Pyongyang officials have said Kim is "suffering from discomfort." The last times he was seen publicly, he had gained weight and developed a limp.

The timing - Kim's longer lasting disappearance and that snap visit in the south now - got me wondering whether he really is in control. Could be that he is a strawman only. A stubborn rumour says that since he assassinated his uncle, military elites refused to follow him like they followed his father. He seemed to have struggled to get the loyalty of these elites from all beginning on.

Rumours that are by exile Korean activists - who may run their own agenda, so take all that with a grain of salt.

Sounds to me like Kim went overboard when he took power and shook up the ruling elite so now he's either been bumped off or has been otherwise defanged.

I'm not buying the surgery and hospitalization bit, unless of course he went elsewhere for help. No self respecting tyrant would ever go see a doctor in his own country.

Cuba would be the place to go for such people I would guess.

And a truly self respecting tyrant would fly the entire foreign medical staff if he feels like it. :p

My guess is that he's taken up dancing, hence the cane. Keeping with the North Korean press tradition of hyperbole he is better than Bojangles Robinson, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly combined and he never took a lesson. :D
