OK so Im not going to ask "Is this game worth it?" (the game is only $10 now) but what I want to know is if the 3 primary problems Ive had since the release of the game have been fixed.

1) Not the full war.

I know there is Expanded Horizons out but is the new tech (radar, Schnorchel, ect.) included in the mod or would I be stuck in 45 with 1943 tech?

2) Internet Conection required.

I could of put up with the early end to the war if an internet connection wasn't required. But I needed something I could play while I was at underway sea/deployed. has this annoying feature been either hacked or fixed?

3) Too arcade like?

Being an old SHIII (GWX) and IV (RFB) hand I`m used to the simulation/realisim aspect of the game. Is V too much like a "shootem up" or can it be made more sim like?

Ive been watching some "Lets Play" vids on youtube and I am getting more and more interested and I just might buy it if these problems have been worked out. I will miss my old U-124 though. Thanks in advance for any info.

Ok, I will take a stab at a reply:

1) Not the full war.

There is a mod that extends the game from 43 to 45. I have not tried it, so cannot comment.

2) Internet Conection required.

That was changed about 1 year after the game came out. Now you just need to log on to activate the game and you can then go offline forever.

3) Too arcade like?

That depends on your viewpoint and what you think is important in the game.

regarding the tactical challenge, i.e. tracking a convoy/TF, sinking ships and evading escorts. If you play with 100% realism and the gameplay mods which have come out, SH5 is as realistic and challenging as SH3/4.

Escorts can be deadly and unlike SH3/4, will use more or less realistic tactics. This was an innovation in SH5 since it introduces scripts.

I can't comment on the campaign mod since I have spent little time with Open Horizon.

For the price it is now, its worth it.
I have never played it passed the happy times campaign. The game I want is in there somewhere but even with mods half of it is still missing, and of course there is SHO, which is pretty much garbage - A decent concept, but badly executed :(
I might give SHV another go at some point, but for now still I'm having too much fun with War Thunder, if they add subs to that one day I will be in heaven.

Bilge Rat has already given a very good answer, so I'll limit myself to the "Arcade-like" question.

I think that's a misnomer, and SH5 was never like an arcade game, in which you run around and shoot things and nothing else. In fact, from what has been said over the years and the one week my ancient computer ran it, I would say it's just the opposite. That said, I think it has many negatives that will keep me away until (unless?) they are ever fixed.

The easy 'Three-Dot' method for aiming torpedoes is a turn-off for me, but I understand that with a little effort you can use more correct methods.

The whole 'Talking to the crew' thing. A nice idea for realism, but they tied it in with morale levels and gave it far too few possible conversations. Again, there may be mods that fix it.

What it doesn't have, even after four years, is the plethora of available merchant types to look at and sink. Despite all the scripting nobody seems to have been able to import all the ships available in SH3. That, and due to the necessity of full interiors so you can walk all over the boat they didn't have time to make any more types than the VII. No Type II, or even IX, let alone something exotic like the XXI.

But we all have different ideas of what makes a sim to our liking, so if those things don't bother you SH5 is probably as good as it gets. I'd say go for it and find out for yourself. :sunny:
