BEIJING - A U.S. meat supplier said Monday it is laying off most of the workforce of a Chinese subsidiary accused of selling expired beef and chicken to McDonald's, KFC and other major restaurant chains (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/mcdonalds-kfc-operations-in-china-affected-by-food-scandal/).

Shocking but I don't eat in China (well not since 77) and I don't frequent any of those establishments in the UK :smug:

Probably get run over by a bus outside my place of work tomorrow

If you've ever seen the kitchen in any fast food joint, you wouldn't eat there. EVER!:o:huh:

That's why I like Waffle House. Their kitchen isn't hidden away in the back.

During my student years I worked in a small hellhole of a kitchen for a Biergarten. Kitchen 4x3m, but the pub and garden for 300 guests... Only a few weeks, but the worst job I ever had, I think. I gave up on that one quite soon. Needless to say, the pay was lousy, too.

Since then I only rarely visit restaurants. I avoid fastfood almost completely, and when I buy food-on-the-hand or go into a restaurant, (happens very rarely only), I only do so when the kitchen is transparent (= you can see inside, some restaurants have discovered that as a marketing argument). Usually, I only buy some Pommes Frites occasionally, every two or three months, and for that I drive to the other side of town, there is a stand where they just make them perfect, and with good oil and not as salty as most do. Well done pommes frites are a delicatesse to me. And if correctly done, they are also not fat. It'S just that most stands offering them, prepare them lousy.

And thankfully I excel in making pizza myself. :D Every week. :yeah:

That way you can see the cook flick boogers on your food.
Based on my experiance working on coolers and freezers and reach ins just because you can see a kitchen dose not mean that it is clean. Some of nastiest are the open ones. What it boils down to is dose the owner care because you can buy your way out of inspectiions. The refrigeration is one of the primary illness points and you cant tell from 20ft away if it is clean and at proper temp.

Here is a tip take look at the vents above the range if this area is clean then it is a good place. Those vents get ignored by many if those are kept most likely a very focused kitchen.

I frequent several different fast food places, and every one of their kitchens is visible from the counter where you order. Unless I use the drive-through I see my burgers being made every time.

Terrorists, bombs, Russians, Ebola, psychopats in back alleys and Americans coming after my oil and now this ??

Forget it, I'm eating out, today I'm going to get a kebab made by an original Albanian and tomorrow I'm going for a wiener schnitzel to that cheap dinner next to the railway station.

And if I die from food poisoning, tough luck. If my mothers chicken didn't put me in the grave by now, even McDonalds chineese beef washed with a romanian CocaCola won't.

Don't get me wrong, inspection agencies should be real nazis when it comes to hygene. Expiration dates should be the eleventh comandement and every cook should present himself/herself to every patron*.

But being afraid to go out just because you're affraid that someone else would touch your food is arogant at best, thinking everyone else is incompetent when it comes to handling meals.

*unpractical yes, I just added it for dramatic purpouses

Also spot on. :yep: Can't really disagree with that.

I would dine in all the time, but I trust the cook here even less than the ones at fast food places. The voices in my head keep telling me he's evil.

I doubt fast food is prepared any less than safer than the normal household, they're probably cleaner than the average home cook these days..

That being said, I use to do in house work for the factory that makes chicken nuggets.....all the leftover junk and skin all ground up. Heck, see it dumped and shoveled into the bins with people coughing and snorting. Heck, watched a guy one day removing his little mask to hock up snot and spit it right next to where he was working and put his shovel in it. They keep it cold as a frig in the working factory and seems damn near everyone in there has a cold. I guess long as they cook it...but I haven't ate any since that day...

I used to work on time clocks and hood suppression systems and I've been in KFC kitchens where you could literally skate on the oily floor and I've serviced time clocks where the carcasses of roaches fell out when I removed the cover and I've serviced range hoods that put the unk in Funk. But, then again, I served in the military where you get to eat out in the woods with dirty hands. The only time I ever got sick was when the mess section forgot to wash a lister bag that we were getting our water from. Military mess halls are among the cleanest places I've ever worked or dined in. They even go as far as caulking around every nook and cranny that a roach could hide in.
If you're scared of germs, never ever dine out or eat food that's served luke warm or cold.

I occasionally do security for restaurant chains at night when they have to be unlocked after dark for renovations, plumbing, retile, and oven vent steaming etc. These are national chain establishments. I do not dine at any of them; Unless they adhere strictly to the Ten Second Rule:O:

When I was riding on the city squads, most of our daytime calls were at grocery stores and restaurants.

Each one of us had a list of restaurants we would not go to eat. Deep down we knew that all restaurants were the same, but not making a call on a specific restaurant gave us plausible deny-ability.

It is a good thing the human digestion system is as strong as it is and can handle massive amounts of bacteria. :yep:

So fast food or traditional joint. They are all filthy.

At least with fast food, there is a good chance the food is not left laying as long as it is in a more traditional place.

I have my patented weight loss plan. Find the food you really have weakness for and go to where that food is prepared/processed. It works.

I remember in high school we took a field trip to an egg processing facility in our town. I love eggs. I could not eat an egg for about 2 years after that visit.

Many citizens are happy with their food because they have no idea how it is prepared. :)

I think it is true that most illness in fact comes from home cooked food. A common mistake is to blame what was last eaten. In fact it takes around 12 hours for food born illness to start giving you problems.

So it is really what was consumed several hours ago often that is not the last food eaten. It may be the first to get projectile vomited but not the culprit. Most awsome are Rice Crispies my daughter chucked those once I could not eat them for month after that.

Main thing is not to piss off the people preparing or serving your food....least wait until you have it...

That's what I always thought too.
A recent item on the radio down here though, revealed that it depends on the bacteria, and can be as little as 2 hours.

That is true I think in truth it can be hard to trace the real cause. Only when several people get ill and common source found do they know for sure.

You also have stomach flu which is not caused by foul food but gets blamed.

Even if they dont do something nasty 90% of the time they will simply leave it on the rack for a few minutes and take it back out. Honestly I think people doing really nasty stuff is pretty rare. These days as well many kitchens have cameras or other employees will report such act.

Loogies in your gravy.

I ate at one truck stop restaurant where my waitress was the QC manager. If the food on the plate didn't meet her standards, she literally threw it back into the kitchen through the pass. I saw her do it.:har:
She got a better than average tip and a Yankee dime from me.:yeah:

:yep:

When I was twelve my dad took us to a Chinese place for dinner. I got sick that night. I'm certain that it was just a common stomach bug, but despite that conviction it was ten years before I could even smell a Chinese dinner without gagging. Even today, while I'll eat Chinese if it's offered, it's not something I'll intentionally buy for myself.
