Hey all,

It isn't a serious thread, thought I'd post up some nautical ales that hopefully people do enjoy, maybe even your favourite, but ultimately let's see how many brews there are related to our craft.

Not heard of any of these yet, apart from Dr Pepper, is that a nautical/submarine related drink though? Like a favourite back then?

I really love Sierra Nevada Torpedo genuinely also.

Extra points if you actually drink/like the beer or beverage posted.

When I was in the navy Dr Pepper was practically all I drank. Does that count?

I still love DP. Can't drink alcohol at all.

I do not really drink alcohol anymore the older I get the less I like it drank too much of it in the military anyway.

This is the beer you'd have been served in the Pacific theater for a sailor legally only while on shore leave.

My favourite beer was actually an ale when I was a lot younger than I am now.
Molsons Export was commonly called X when asked for in a bar or at the beer store.

Yoohoo, Coca Cola, and (good) Sweet Tea take the top spot.

Root Beer and Mountain Dew take the #2 spot.

Although, buying bags/canisters of Gatorade powder and putting too much powder in a bottle of water tastes immaculate. :hmmm:

Well the RC cola and a Moonpie thing was popular before high fructose corn syrup was used in food. Really I think someone might have eaten that once a week. Those guys also did not spend too much time sitting down at work so they probably burned off the calories.

Most people had a soda maybe once a week. My dad when he was a kid in the 50's the whole family would go to a diner once a week on Saturday that was the only soda they would drink all week usually.

These days in the US (and we aren't the only guilty party here :03:) some people drink over a liter of soda a day no wonder they have troubles.

Actually this surprised me according to this the US is not even in the top 20. You Aussies do have a lower average than the US though.

Myself I used to drink a lot of sodas until a buddy in the military convinced me that I'd feel much better if I did not drink so much soda(not that I felt bad at the time but I did feel even better with less sugar). So I took his advice that has been about 15 years or now. These days I drink maybe 2 sodas a week at most.
http://healthintelligence.drupalgardens.com/content/prevalence-diabetes-world-2013

Another factor was a few years ago my father was put on the pre-diabetic diet by his doctor because he was headed in that direction. He just changed his diet and was able to find foods that had taste yet where still healthy.

Anyway back to favorite beverages or what not.

About 20 years ago I found coke to be way too sweet for me, so I started cutting it 50% with soda water. Now the only time I drink it is IF I am in a bar with friends because I am never in a bar alone.

I am very grateful for the kind messages conveyed to me on the occasion of my birthday yesterday.

Among the presents were some bottles of India Pale Ale which, we were always told, was especially strongly formulated to survive a long maritime voyage to the far flung corners of Empire. A quick reference to Wikipedia p...es all over this idea, however.

(Incidentally, I'm currently at work on a painting of the kind of Clipper Ship which transported this stuff, The "Garfield")

So THAT'S moon pie... we used to call them "Wagon Wheels" here and if you ask people of my age about them their eyes usually mist over with nostalgia: they do NOT taste the same now as when we were kids. Everybody but everybody agrees on this. So I wonder whether moon pie tastes like Wagon Wheels used to; I never came across them on my one and only trip to the US.

My wife asked me the other day "What makes you happy?" Without hesitation I replied "Beer".

I don't know what she meant, but she then asked me "Well what's the next thing that makes you happy?", so I said "More beer". (Well the first paragraph is true).

"My British Buddy" was the title of an episode of "Dad's Army" in which a brash G.I. takes a mouthful of English ale in a pub and immediately spits it out because "My God! It's warm!"

Aktung's always on about "Hamm's" (which I've never seen here and presume to be a continental lager type beer like "Bud") and I just was wondering: is traditional British beer now more familiar worldwide? And do Americans still spit it out?

PS/ I just drank the above picture and it is now inside me...

Around where I live I've seen Newcastle Brown Ale on sale in stores and in some restaurants (I got a six pack of it for my birthday).

As for the American reaction to British beer is Americans tend to drink lager beer which is served cold and/or cool, although there are probably some beer drinkers in the US who have drank a warm beer at least once. This article gives some insight as to why, http://www.northamericanbrewers.org/warmbeer.htm

I actually like warm beer. This does drive others around me a bit around the bend, but I first got used to it when I was dating a Brit and she used to place a bottle of beer straight out of the fridge on top of the TV set so it would warm up. I then started to just leave the bottles out in the kitchen so they would be at room temperature for her. Since then, I have rather preferred warm to cold...

Regarding Hamm's, I don't know if yours is the same as or similar to our US Hamm's brand, but, over here, it is sort of a low cost, everyday beer, something you drink more for the low expense, rather than the taste; think of it as sort of a frat boy beer...

No.
But Spitfire 1500 (my first own car), Spitfire Mk III, Herald Saloon, TR3, TR 4, TR 250 from the US (=TR5) and TR6.
The Stag was already a what i call "new generation" Triumph with the cut-off tail, like the Spi 1500 and the last GT6 MkIII. Nice car though ..

Also an MG B, and lots of other non-english cars.

Precisely; also referred to as 'weasel piss' in the Great Northern Wasteland! goes with any roadkill stew and was served for four years exclusively by the half-barrel at all rugby and frat functions. If it was an upscale function or to impress the noble ladies...Pabst Blue Ribbon or Millers was preferred.:O:

Pabst was regarded at the same level as Hamm's. The same for Schlitz, Olympia, and a few others with which I had the opportunity to soil my internal systems in my now foggy and hazy youth. Say, you don't think they had anything to do with my fogginess and haziness?...Nah, probably just a coincidence...

What's the matter don't like GT6's? :88) I like my Spitfire MkII a lot although I do have a 1500 block with a Toledo head in it and a 3.89 rear end so I don't destroy stub axles daily.

I always loved the TR4a but I can't sit in any of the TR series without smashed knees.

And I thought the joke was the English drank warm beer because they were always working on their cars. Not a specific Lucas reference.

If you're looking for decent beer abroad, other than Blighty, the only place I can recommend is Belgium. Those monks sure know how to brew a quality drop, all the taste and body of English bitter, but they start at around 6% abv (12% proof for yanks) and they only go up in strength! The art of an evening on these beers is to take your time and plenty of food with it. I've seen British yoof drink in Belgium like they do back here (throw as much booze down your neck as fast as you can to get plastered in the shortest amount of time) and the results ain't pretty!

Many european brewries send to the U.S. what they "Export Beer". It's a watered down version of what the folks at home get. They figure americans will drink any kind of slop that is labeled "import" and think they are getting top-shelf stuff. And sad to say, to a certain extent the european brewers are correct with that assumption.

Catfish
10-12-14, 12:10 PM
^ That is not quite true: German 'Export' is indeed another version of the usual 'Pils' varieties, but it is usually stronger brewed, and has a bit more Alcohol to make it more durable (right word?). A bit more like what is called 'Lager' in England. Some local folks here in Germany prefer the Export version, and you can get it in almost every market. It is not a watered-down version, just another one.

Apart from that you can get virtually any beer you want, at almost every store. Even american ones, but then you would have to look for a special store that imports it. Miller's is pretty much hip here, like some mexican beers, and available everywhere.
So Tsingtao beer or any european or even indonesian beer is not a problem, but Hamm's or Schlitz might be. Few drink it though ..

English beer or the irish Guinness is not bad at all, it just is not brewed like the Pils or Pilsener variety, which of course was invented in Pilsen, now Czech Republic. Just do not compare it to Pilsener beer.
English beer is more like what some abbies brew here, a bit stronger, malty, but then not as bitter and not with the tight, lasting foam some english beers have.

Ah whatever, most tastes pretty good

Drink a Heineken or a Löwenbräu over there and then drink the same labels here and you will see what I'm talking about. Some states won't even allow the bringing in of certain labels because of the alcohol content. You can't find EKU 28 here in Washington State but it's available in California. But it has to have its label defaced with a big rubber-stamped "MALT LIQUOR" to make it legal there. You have to be 21 to buy alcohol in most states but in some, 18 year olds can legally buy "3.2%" beer. Alcohol laws in the U.S. are a mishmash of illogic and Bible Belt mentality.

I have lived and traveled over a large part of Canada and the US. In both countries it is a safe bet that the big label beers (Bud, Coors, Molson etc) are all crap.

However the variety in imports is huge, as well as the variety in well made local beers. As you would expect some are better than others it depends on how they are made, so I suggest taking a trip and trying many. You may even find some cold ones you like :yeah:

Sure you were son ...

Nice but not out of a can as those dam widgets are useless. Pop the lid and your John Smiths flys out like a erupting volcano!

Speaking of John Smith's I got a couple of bottles of this in..
