What a horrible thing to do. The sentence is deserved but I've never been at peace with charging minors as adults.

A combination of USA paranoia and Laws gone over the edge, thanks to that ignoramus, Bush and cronies, and a stupid kid, who and his parents, should know better.

While this definitely deserves some form of punishment 25 years is something not even a lot of murderers get here. Totally exaggerated especially considering that it's a 15 years old. :timeout:
A rather high sentence! :o

Are they crazy ?
This was a prank, if a bad one, from a 15-year-old boy !
25 years ?!
Does the US version of criminal law relating to young offenders really say that ??
Post 9/11 paranoia and "threat level" hype US style :nope::nope:

There is only so far you can go with discipline today in the USA. I've no idea what this kids parents are like but they may have done all they could without child protective services knocking on the door.

It's not a prank is the point. The victims Dad was shot in the raid.
Perhaps you missed the part where the targets father was shot. This kid attempted murder. That's definitely worth 25 years.

He deserves punishing so he realises that his stupidity has serious consequences but as others have said it seems a little OTT, 18-24 months in a young offenders prison I think would have been more suitable.

@August
Yes missed that part, sorry.
Very bad, but there should be other methods. I guess this kid has already learned his lesson - bad enough to live with this :-?

I disagree. This teen should have been charged as an adult. And while I don't like the Patriot act on principle I do think the teen got a fair punishment. At 15 one should know they can't call the police with a fake call, and putting people's lives at risk.

I was going to say "In before Bush's fault" but no.
Im a huge proponent of personal responsibility
this kid is responsible for his actions, when i was 15 i knew the difference between right and wrong, and while i might have crank called a hardware store asking for left handed screw drivers, or underhanded hammers or whatever... i would have NEVER in my wildest dreams phoned in a fake murder to get the cops to raid someone's home
the punk got exactly what he deserved... especially since the innocent resident of the home could have died from his injuries.
I wont blame the parents on this one, though they surely are responsible for some of this mess... the kid knew what he was doing when he phoned in the false report, he should have known better.
I would say let him sit in federal prison for at least 5 or 6 years, then overturn the sentence.
what a moron.

Naturally the story continued by describing how dangerous it is for the police to serve no knock warrants and the consequences to them and occupants of the home in the process.
Perhaps, if the police stopped raiding homes like a bunch of jack booted storm troopers who shoot anything that moves, these kinds of tragedies might be avoided. Even if some fool kid SWATS a rival with a false police report.
There are both audio and video tools available to see what's going on in the house before you go knocking down the bloody door. That is if they could refrain from screaming up to the place with lights and sirens telegraphing their approach, they could sneak up and have a peek very easily. :-?
At any rate, young master Horner is going to have a long time to contemplate his stupidity.
. Used as an example ya think?:hmmm:
We could send him some Preparation H.:arrgh!:
"Here you go Warden, got you a nice young body for the prison factory."

If the news story is accurate, it sounds a bit more than a prank.
I am not writing that I agree with the sentence, but it is more than a prank. Bet he won't be doing that again.

Split on this....one part of me thinks the sentence a little harsh and the other reminds me what I've learned in life about people being made accountable for the consequences of their actions.

Lets not forget though, sooner or later he will be up for parole. And he will likely be paroled and released.
I doubt if he will serve seven years of the sentence

nope, every time they do a false raid there is a good chance someone can be shot or killed (resident or police) so in effect this kid was loading a gun and playing Russian roulette with other peoples lives in the name of FUN.
he is no different then those kids who threw a big rock off the overpass into an oncoming cars windshield and killed a mother driving with her husband and kid and the kid saw his moms brains out all over the seat.
stop looking at the image or impression of what you think the image of the criminal is and look at the victims and their families when fun and games gets people killed.
this doesn't matter anyway because they are sending a message and in a year or two they will reduce his sentence to time served and he will only do about 2 years of actual jail time I bet

After all that's been said here, I only have one problem with the current prison system. I just hope he doesn't get a Masters degree in crime while at Crime University. Otherwise he'll become hopelessly entangled in a vicious closed loop.

Yes sir, just what we need... another criminal trapped in the Merry-go-Round. It might straighten him out and then again it might make him worse.:hmmm:

Only three types of federal prisoners can get parole
1. If they committed their crimes prior to 1988. Conviction date does not apply.
2. If they committed their crime in Washington, DC regardless of date.
3. If they are Military prisoners.
http://www.uscourts.gov/News/TheThirdBranch/11-05-01/Parole_in_the_Federal_Probation_System.aspx
The appropriate legislation is The Sentencing Reform Act 1987
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentencing_Reform_Act
There are isolated instances of Early Release from Federal Prison, but that is not the same as Parole.

Nice to know the politicians are always thinking about their future. :03:
I think in this instance the sentence was correct, as Stealhead pointed out, he probably won't serve all of it anyway, and his actions resulted in a man being shot. I would love to say, though, that this sort of sentencing would discourage the action of 'Swatting' however knowing the youth of today (oh dear God, I've finally reached the age where I can say that...) it probably will just encourage them. :nope:

Yes, it is a fake story. The kid, who's photo has been shown is actually Dylan Schumaker:

:stare: Disregard previous transmissions.
Except the parts regarding the heavy handed tactics being employed by the Fuzz. Some SWAT teams in Connecticut have discovered recently that they can't claim immunity from lawsuits after busting down a man's door and killing his friend as they were watching TV. This one done with a no knock warrant to search for drugs after a hooker gave them the tip.
You could say that she SWATTED those unfortunate fellows.:stare:

After watching several youtubes on Swat, I have lil respect for their tactics. They use to set people up to arrest, pretend to be the UPS man, now they come in like a tornado. They know many of the tips they get are simply setups or often minor drug offenses, don't care or know how many people are in the house, kids, etc. If they get it wrong, good luck getting them to pay for all the damage they do. You get to file for it and may take several months. If they happen to shoot your pets, no biggie, they'll just say Fifi was barking and growling at them in your house.
This is sick

See what I mean? They don't seem to have any problem with killing you, your dog or one of your kids.:stare: They should be brought up on domestic terrorism charges every time they pull one of these stunts. It was nice of them to knock and give the residents all of thirty seconds to respond.:-?
I've had the county mounties banging on my door at 01:00 in the morning, thinking that I might have robbed a nearby restaurant because my car looked similar and the hood was still warm when they came by sniffing for the culprits. If things were like now back then, they would have just beaten down my door and come in like gang busters. and claimed probable cause.
